Image Entertainment Inc. was founded in 1981 as a LaserDisc distributor and became a major distributor of the format. Image solely focused its output distribution to DVDs at the turn of the 1990s, and they were acquired by RLJ Acquisition, Inc. in 2012. It was a subsidiary of RLJ Entertainment until 2018, when the company was renamed to RLJE Films.
