This is absolutely f******* amazing and beautiful. I'm not a uber connoisseur in the kecak matter, but this is the tightest I've seen to date. Congratulations.
as a balinese, i really proud that you did one of our dance in the US. well, the clothes are not accurate tho. but besides that, you performed it well. you, sir, deserve a like!
This piece holds a huge healing power. I saw it live in a Balinese temple in Ubud, performed by Men. I saw it somewhere else on TH-cam performed by Balinese Male singers & dancers again. I now I see it here performed by Western Men & Women... and it still holds and vibrates that healing power. The power is in the sound, voice, movement and intention. Best detach from labels everywhere else it's possible, if you feel like this should belong only in certain places. Respectfully. I enjoyed this video very much 😊 thank you!
Oh wow. I went to CSSSA/InnerSpark in 1999 and 2000. Such fond memories of this song. Much love to you and Cliff and Rychard. I stumbled across this video in my brainstorming for a vocal/body percussion workshop I'll be teaching at a festival this summer. Hugs! -Ashley Wright
Forgot to mention, a word of advise for the performing students: next time, try not to spoil all the effect the dance had over you. Just imagine how it would have felt if, at the end of the dance, instead of bursting into cheers and applause, you would have kept at least 10 seconds of silence.
Maria Bodmann Hello, I hope you're doing good :) Oh.. It would be so great.. but.. you know, I live in France.. on the south :( I'm so sad because this is amazing, and you can't come to France.. there's nothing like this in my high school. Keep doing what you do, you're so nice :)
Thanks Surya :-) I'll have one experimental video soon and then a video of America: The Reality Show - a political satire about the current government of the USA in shadows...
The "solo" type lyrics are improvised - the singing are imitating sounds of the gamelan and the "cak" sounds are the interlocking patterns. It's not written out. Thanks for the kind words :-)
We have Jason. We also studied Central Javanese gamelan and teach / share it with students in Los Angeles! I will upload a video of Central Javanese Gamelan played by California h.s. students. Sundanese music is one of my favorites, especially Degung and Kecapi Suling! There's a fantastic suling player up in San Jose, it's too bad that's not commutable from L.A. Thanks for the comments!
Thanks so much Aditya Wiranatha! I love your island and culture!!! Rick Patrick - it's my absolute PLEASURE to study your culture :-). Tino Trivino - ain't that the truth...
I am so impressed :) is there a way to get liricks for this chant? or is this taught without liricks??? How can I teach a group this. So amazing and inspiring :)
This looks and sounds a lot more like what I saw in the late 50's than the dozens of touristized performances out in youtube land. On the other hand, the costumes in this one do seem to be not quite authentic. And the one I remember had at least twice as many performers.
@@mariabodmannread my comment again, the beginning of the video says 'california state summer school of the arts, or CSSA, which is what I mentioned in my comment. I know what Kecak is. I went to CalArts (i actually took the Kecak and different gamelan classes there) and a lot of my friends did CSSSA, but i just realized I never knew what it stood for.
goatisdemen ah ok, this was a performance by the 2010 CSSSA Music students. It was part of the California State Summer School For The Arts (CSSSA) while my partner Cliff and I taught there. So Kecak was a part of it but kecak doesn’t stand for CSSSA. Hope that’s clear now. 😀
I sampled the original chant if you wanna check it out, link is below Listen to LIT [PROD JP] by 808KiiNG #np on #SoundCloud soundcloud.com/808kiing/lit-prod-by-jp
1:25 soft cut in the middle of when it gets good!? bad form, editor! The sheer awesomeness of the performers saved this vid from a thumbs down - dislike.
Hallie Chandola actually originally it was a 3 day ritual when there were huge problems in a village... It was made into a tourist performance (which included the Monkey Battle from the Ramayana) so that it wasn't lost...
For some reason, this seems more authentic that the kecak performed by indigenous balinese people. But then again, nowadays they are performing only four tourists. Tourists are quite a plague, they kill everything authentic in a culture.
It depends on where in Bali you watched the performance. I saw the 1.5 hours version which included many of the chanting here and even more narrations in Balinese, the touristy one is in Uluwatu cos most people will find the original one too long and full of chants and narratives.
This is absolutely f******* amazing and beautiful. I'm not a uber connoisseur in the kecak matter, but this is the tightest I've seen to date. Congratulations.
Thanks so much for your kind comment! We worked hard but at some point the energy takes over and is completely contageous! :-)
with all the due respect this isn't the highest. this is better

Hope to learn it..but I m in Msia
It's good to see this dance being appreciated internationally.

Wonderful that the Kecak is being shared with high school students. I have been to Bali many times and this made me smile and want to travel again.
whoa i didn't expected the pronunciation would be that accurate
Thank you - we lived in Bali a long time ago, studied hard, and try to share what we know :-)

The form deprived of the myth. A symbol of American society.
I watched the entire sequence, congrats, very nice for Westerners!
Genesis Gaia thank you - the energy was there! Glad you liked it!
The Ramayana "myth" was actually added by Walter Spies, from Europe, in the 1930's. The original kecak has no such story.

Not sure what you mean. Kecak is a ritual chant from Bali, used in prior times. It doesn’t STAND for anything but itself and cultural significance.
