In five years, I bought more than 40 Micro-B cables to replace the 4 different cables I used to connect my phone to my PC, Wall Charger, Car Charger and portable battery pack because they failed to make a connection usually within 3-4 months. I've yet to replace the 2 USB-C cables I use for my Nintendo Switch or USB-C phone in two years...

    • @Ancyker

Brand is important too. When I was driving truck the only USB cables for my phone's that didn't need replaced monthly were the Anker cables. I only buy them now. The vibrations just murdered them.
The Anker cables outlived 2 phones. Verizon replaced my Droid Turbo and Google Pixel each one time because of the charge port failing, but the cables kept powering through. Pun intended. Lol. I still have the same Anker cable from then, but I don't drive truck anymore.

The worst thing about USB-C is that the cable manufacturers somehow each got a different idea about the spec; so with the same port two different cables might feel completely different: one of them might slip in easily while the second cable, also USB-C, might feel like it is about to break the whole phone while you insert it. If you keep using two different cables then youre likely going to break the port real fast

@@nickknight1618 I have a nexus5x, that I'm finally getting around to replacing. (ordered a new phone an hour ago!) It was one of the first phones with a usbc connector, but I wasn't happy about it. My prior phone was a nexus 5 (the lg one) that had wireless charging. 5x doesn't have it of course. :(
About 6 months ago I noticed that if I plug a usbc cable into the phone, it won't charge or connect unless I hold the connector. Tried new cables, including the stock ac cable that came with the phone that I never used.
None of them worked. The only thing that works is a couple of the docks that I have, that has a usbc plug sticking out. There's nothing special about the dock, other than the dock holds the phone in place of course. The cable does have a bit of swivel room in the dock, it's designed to be multipurpose so it can move in/out, up/down, left/right but it doesn't move at all once you let go.
Sample size of one...and admittedly I've had the phone a long time (got it in november of 2015) so I really can't complain...but usb-c is not perfect.
I'm glad that phones nowadays have finally embraced usbc..and I'm especially glad that phones nowadays have also finally started to embrace wireless charging.
It's the end of an era though, as they seem so eager to get rid of eadphone jacks nowadays...glad the one I ordered does!

The small USB connections are fucking junk, and its idiotic that even the most expensive smartphones still have that connector. Why dont they just add a new ridgig power connector (yes a single time it would be good to have a new connector) next to the USB connector. The issue isnt plugging it in/out the issue is movement when the device is plugged in.

I had a micro usb cable break the connector in a phone some years ago (Tmobile G2). Thank goodness the battery was replaceable and it had a memory card slot. Ended up getting an external charger with some batteries and continued to use that phone on and off for several more years. I still have it in a box somewhere and it still works.

I don't care how many insertion/removal cycles it'll take, what I want to know is how hard is it to snap the damn thing off if you accidentally nudge the cable the wrong way. I don't think I've ever owned a device that got through 10,000 insertion/removal cycles before some other force broke the port.

wile123456, Yeah I've had that experience with a lot of my MicroUSB devices. Data transfer becomes almost impossible and charging requires pressuring the port in weird positions. My USB-C devices however are outlasting their cables, which is what should happen.
Which reminds me, I really need to RMA my phone's USB-C cable. I've had it for only half a year and the side near the phone has split open.

Those ports seem to have a tendency to bow if not braced. I used to open up one of my mom's phones once or twice a year to squeeze the port back flat with a pair of pliers until I got tired of that and just coated it in a thin layer of epoxy. Never had to open it again.

  • @audieliem4843

Wait ... people actually defended Micro USB?
The USB 3.0 Variant found on mostly external HDD is abominable - the USB 2.0 one on old smartphone is passable but now that Type-C Exist, there's no reason to not go C, especially because it's reversible
BTW iPhone users have A REVERSIBLE charging port years before type c exist

But when lightning can transfer data, nokia's round port supports only charging

    • @DELTARYZ
      @DELTARYZ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

while that is a notable benefit of Thunderbolt, the lack of standardization meant that iPhone users had to buy Apple-licensed connectors - thus lining Apple's pockets with more peripheral-based revenue - and people without iPhones could not share chargers. Plus, the flat connector is quite flimsy - it's quite easy to snap in half given the right angle, and everyone knows most Apple cables are notorious for fraying near the connector (my MacBook Pro 2015 is on its way there, sadly).
Also, fun fact: the iPhone 7 headphone adapter has to include the DAC inside the adapter itself as the phone does not contain one. The extremely small size of the cable means the DAC is very small and relatively weak, meaning an iPhone headphone adapter will produce lower quality sound than any random 3.5mm device typically would.
The Type C cable on my Nexus 6P shares none of these issues.

No amount of care will keep that connector from coming loose, getting hot, bending, etc. I can't stand how it's become the de-facto standard for devices. I'd rather deal with a larger device just to have Mini B on it instead.

My level of hate for Micro B is immense. I have never had so many cords go bad just in general usage. And this has happend on EVERY Micro B drive I've gotten. And you cannot BUY a good cord at all either. I literally have to buy a new drive to get a replacement cord. I've busted the drives out of their containers JUST to be able to keep using them. And yet the previous micro USB, despite it being only 2.0, is much preferable. If the new C works, and lasts longer, I'm more then happy to see it come in. I'll bust the old drives out of their cases, and buy new cases for them with the new connections.

A cable also almost bricked my drive. The cable's power delivery pin got damaged after 500 connects/disconnects. I plugged it in, and it started writing garbled data. I realised only after 10% of the drive was in chinese, that something is wrong. Got a new cable, ran chkdisk and fixed it. Defraggler still gives me a warning drive state. (Said new cable lasted 2 months btw)

It was meant to be "shouldn't", but I was replying to OP.
I did have a phone that did something similar during a firmware upgrade, but was luck enough to boot it back up into recovery mode where it just reverted it back.
