100% agree. I bought AVX Advanced mount with "complimentary" 6" Newtonian tube (cheapest there, but I cared only for the mount and store added the tube), plus power pack, plus few other accessories (polar scope, bunch of rings etc). My initial intent was - I'll use the mount with my DSLR and simple long lens (Nikon 500 mm) and - capture images. I've used it 3 times and now it's in the boxes. The manuals are really poorly written. And - I can't watch TH-cam when I'm in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere.

The first time you use the Starsense Auto Align or Starsense Manual align, the manual, on p. 12, says that once you have identified a star for Calibrate Center, the Starsense will automatically go into Calibrate Center mode (see 2.53 into the video). That could throw you off if you are new to Starsense and not expecting this functionality. I assume you can manually rerun Calibration Center as often as you want by navigating to Menu>Starsense>Calibrate. Also, the typically useful prompts on the Starsense hand control are weak in the Calibrate Center mode. When the hand control says "Coarse Centring," press Enter when you have aligned the star in your finderscope or low magnification eyepiece. When it says "Fine Centering," press Align when the object is centered in a high magnification eyepiece.

It seems like you will demonstrate yourself by auto-aligning.
What I would say is that my observation environment is a place where visibility is limited, so manual aura
It is limited to the incment work.
The outline of the specific procedure is as follows: (1) A manual alarm is used to move the star sense camera in three directions
After taking a ligation point, we shoot 2 or 3 directions as additional points. ② Center
In the calibration process, select target star "Antares" and complete. ③ re-manua

Although the lens barrel faces the target planet almost, it shifts to altitude (declination) (in the direction lower than the celestial body
The lens barrel faces) will not be solved quite easily.
In the article on the 20th page upper section of the instruction manual whether the pointing accuracy can be improved, hand control
I tried the procedure using the roller's HELP button, but it does not work. For item 1, select the desired planet name with the SOLAR SYSTEM key after completing the manual alarming work
Then, use the ENTER key to automatically introduce that object, this can be understood. The contents of 2 can not be understood now.
Movement of the telescope is complete (At this point, the target object is not in the eyepiece field of view)
Then press the HELP button and manually search for the target object without using the direction key.
I do not know the meaning of "searching target objects manually without using direction

I have had no issues at all. I do know this! if the device your using has any software or malicious issues you will get what you mentioned, also your hand controller needs to be up to date with the latest software and also your telescope needs to be set up correctly in order for the goto software to work correctly that's why i have had no issues at all. I helped a lot of friends and i found that they were not following the correct instructions and set up of the telescope. It will not work unless everything is spot on.

What is the best practice method of using a CGX-L mount and the StarSense?

Can you perform an ASPA on the CGX-L once the StarSense has performed the calibration?

    • @CelestronDotCom

If you are using StarSense, you will use that for both StarSense and your mount. If you are just using your mount, then you would use your NexStar hand control.
To improve your pointing accuracy, you may want to do ASPA (all star polar alignment).

This video was very helpful, except for replacing the hand controller. I don't know if it was me, but the replacing of the hand controller took a very very long time. The reason is the telescope design on where the hand controller is connected to the telescope is in a very small and very tight space. It would have been extremely helpful if Celestron would show how to replace the hand controller, in particular showing how to reconnect it to the telescope. The telescope I was replacing the hand controller on, is a NextStar 6SE. To date, I have found only one TH-cam Video that shows the connection spot to the telescope. The person in the video only comment was that this was a terrible design by Celestron. Other that this glaring problem, this was a good and helpful video,

The issue is not so much finding and aligning, but ACCESS to traditional polar scopes and end-of-tube line-of-sight gizmos without breaking one's back. Older astronomers are looking for this, younger ones will be sooner than they think, and the StarSense totally misses the mark. Any straight-through alignment or finder scope ought to come with orthopedic warning stickers attached, along with a bottle of muscle relaxers and pain killers. Or try an eight-foot tripod to get the polar scope at a reasonable level. After alignment, apply bucket truck accessory to reach telescope eyepiece.

  • @nervenerd

should have started by explaining what the Star Sense unit actually is. Looks like it might be a camera/mini-telescope which can be aligned with the optical axis of the main telescope (or at least knows the angle between itself and the telescope) and can itself see stars and plate-solve to find where the main scope is actually pointing - and perhaps even control the main scope to point at a desired target. But none of the videos I've viewed actually explains what it is, so I'm guessing.

    • @SusannaGross
      @SusannaGross 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I bought an Astro-Fi. It's possible to use it without any hand controller, but it's much easier with one. The Astro-Fi manual is a joke and it's important to read manuals for other fancier mounts to get some idea of how to align an Astro-Fi. You must start with it horizontal and pointing north, and you have to re-orient, power cycle the scope, and start from square one every time the WiFi stops responding. This happens quite often. I think a reasonable functional way to go would be to purchase a suitable hand control by itself. Then you can actually complete a manual alignment and get some benefit out of the scope. It's an additional $100 for a hand control, or $400 for a StarSense, which includes a hand control. Unfortunately you can't buy the StarSense camera by itself.

This video is OK, but it omits a critical step. You MUST enter your location, unless you are in Torrance, CA like Celestron is, or your scope has a builtin GPS. You are not prompted, it's necessary to use the back button to return to the top level "Starsense Ready" and then use the down button (labeled scroll 9) on the keypad, and press Enter after you see "Time and Location", then use the 9 key again to get Location, and Enter to edit that. Unless you live in a major city, you need to hit the lower left Celestron logo button while editing to enable latitude and longitude entry. Be sure to have your latitude and longitude of the observing site figured out in degrees, minutes, seconds format before you start your first alignment. It doesn't matter if your scope has WiFi and is talking to a cell phone with perfect location and time data. That data is not used.

When you first turn the hand control on and select the language it asks you to enter the date, time, and position. Another possibility is that the user performed a factory reset at some point.
In another case, the user had the numbers for their custom list and long entered correctly, but the sign of the longitude was wrong: it should have been set to - to indicate longitude west. Instead, the trjedvioe thought it was in Khazakstan instead of Canada!

This unit is only good if you are visually observing. If you want to do Astrophotography then this unit will do you no justice as you still need to end up doing a precise polar alignment. Now if one has to do a precise polar alignment you still need to do that manually so what does this unit solve by having it? Wouldn't one be better off getting polemaster since that takes you step by step in a precise polar alignment without one having to search for stars themselves? Just wondering

    • @strelnikoff7
      @strelnikoff7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I was wondering the same. I guess what they don't mention is - or should be "for astrophotography, first do a good polar alignment"... I guess it will work then. I'm thinking about buying this gadget, just because I don't like my NexStar+ and manuals are really bad - so I can save time and then just point where I want to shoot.

Notts boy24 I wish you are in Houston, I’d have few questions :) So, three days ago I went to our local astro store with intent to buy this StarAlign. I ended up buying Polemaster. We had one or two semi-clear nights so I thought - first let me help myself by doing and learning accurate polar alignment. And I wanted to use my cheapo 6” newt (it’s f/5 so why not). It was just sitting there intimidating me. So I went out not far from the city, and realized I forgot the Polemaster - so back to basics with polar scope “where is North, is that Polaris? can’t see the dipper... my neck and back are gone”. Ended up with semi-decen alignment. Then 2 star alignment - and what I learned is that finder scope is really ... well, whatever the star I thought I was seeing (used app on iPad) I couldn’t really find. So I probably botched that step. The funny part was - I decided to shoot Orion - it’s so obvious I can’t miss it if I tried. But finding it with the finder scope which is not aligned with telescope (some o-ring and flimsy screws, moving left and right)... couldn’t put it in the liveview of my camera. Then I found the nebulae, ended up being Flame and horsehead. Got about 15 average shots and 25 so-so (humidity was very high, thin cloud above). At the end - tracking was good, but I wasted hours of trying to find stars and targets. So - soon I’ll get this StarAlign... but as you said - set-up must be really good for this to work properly...

If you are using the Star Sense Accessory with an equatorial mount, yes, you will need to polar align the mount to get the optimal tracking performance. If you are using an alt-azimuth mount, then no. Star Sense Accessory will work fine without the need to adjust the polar axis.

I had to listen to this portion several times to catch all the details... Otherwise instructions in this video are helpful.

Sadly, a good idea that's not anywhere as good as it should be, particularly for 320 dollars.
First typical Celestron hand controller, meaning lousy display (LCD). Difficult to read is an understatement and the controller itself is poorly constructed. My controller won't answer inputting the numbers 6 thru 0. If you want to put in the REAL Lat Lon of your location (because the city is not in the data base) you're screwed. More over, the actual controls are difficult to follow. Celestron says "Press enter then back if you want to accept" is a common in this poorly written operations manual. All in all, not worth anywhere near $320. Really good idea, but very poorly done.

Well, the price of this is already high. Their normal mount with 3 star is fine. And honestly you dont need a super low powered eyepiece, it just makes it faster. This is all extra stuff. If you have a scope like this, you might already have a couple of eyepieces anyways. It just be an extra 50~100 for something many who are looking into this already have.
If you need one your better off buying one that is going to run you a decent price. Telescopes, more so goto/auto guide are not a cheap investment. You should buy equally quality eyepieces as well.
