"I didn't realize how light this foundation was." *literally the first time I have ever seen his foundation match his neck* Sister James you are lighter than you think.
True but I also think he just has major anxiety about that time he did it SUPER white and the internet came for him hard 😂 I think that's just his insecurities
Mo r his foundation wasn’t white in that photo though, it was just flashback so that makes no sense, he just has to not use shitty HD powders and he can still wear foundation that actually matches him instead of only painting for one angle from a camera.
Hanna Opsata Sollie it took Jenna a while to get up with the trends because she isnt big on make up. Just look at her through back make up video. She wore crazy eyeliner in college
sister James, 7 years ago (like Jenna in the video) we had no idea about setting spray, there was no such thing as too much bronzer or foundation that would match ur skin tone, highlighters were literally office supplies and baking was a way to make cookies 😂 we were cheap and unskilled sisters
Lol yesss I remember seeing this and now it’s totally different than what we do now I think she should do an updated one I know it’s not always her thing and she’s usually doing the beauty related videos for fun but I’d like to see compared to her old one makeup has changed so much
Seeing James in “normal people makeup” is so satisfying. The natural browns and “I don’t care look” (natural and smudgy) is probably one of my favorite looks on him so far.
Daisy Hernandez for real!? I never seen in it stores. But maybe that was because i live in the netherlands we are behind on fashion trends in comparison to the us.
shoot i didn't realize makeup can go on your eyebrows or ya know foundation 7 years ago.... just black eyeliner..... got gud and started using green hot topic eyeshadow with the eyeliner and a mascara and thought it was the best thing i ever done...
I, AT LEAST, bought my first (and last actually) highlighter 6year ago, the Mac soft and gentle, because some people were talking about it on TH-cam, but had no idea how to apply it cause highlighter wasn’t a thing 🤷♀️
I think Jenna nailed the look that was in 6-8 yrs ago... I remember watching this tutorial when it came out. As someone who is her exact age, I can vouch that setting powder, setting spray, and highlight weren't popular or highly used.
It was kinda condescending but it was also a little wholesome and cute how he praised her for being helpful and accurate, because it's a truthful compliment. Jenna isn't a super-skilled makeup artist but she made a good, accessable tutorial and he commended her for it.
I think Jenna represents the more everyday makeup wearer. As much as I love beauty gurus, I sometimes feel like they're totally out of touch with the everyday consumer like me. I don't have the money to use 30 products on my face and a different brush for each of them. I don't have the time for the full glam I love for every single day. Don't get me wrong, in a perfect world I fully would, but in reality I only get new makeup for my birthday or christmas. I'll never stop watching because the artistry and talent that goes into it will always mesmerise me and i feel like I'm always picking up new tricks to make my small makeup collection make me look that lil bit more sickening. I just can't realistically relate to a lot of this.
16:18 That mascara is still being sold though...2011 was only 7 years ago. It's in drugstores everywhere. It's called "The Falsies Volum' Express" by Maybelline
It’s pretty funny to me that I’m not too much older than him but we come from different worlds when it comes to what makeup was like when we were in school. Back in the day Jenna’s video would have been “extra” for a non-makeup artist in terms of the amount of technique, product, and and effort that went into the look. He’s honestly lucky that she didn’t have that weird bottom only liner or put her foundation on with her fingers like a ton of us did back in the day...
lmao the bottom only eyeliner. I can vividly imagine girls from my grade 7 class with bottom only eyeliner, super chunky mascara and white glitter eyeshadow.
Omg you just DRAGGED me 😂😂😂 I put powder foundation on with a sponge and, if I had the nerve to, would like just my waterline. I’m also only a couple years older than him and it’s so interesting to see.
Not really, In the 90s-early 2000s drugstores(at least in my area) didn't sell that stuff and none of my friends knew what it was... Obviously it must have been around in the industry, but for the common consumer, no one heard of it.
I love that he’s correcting her makeup skills from 7 years ago and saying he needs to teach her...I’m sure her makeup skills have gotten better as she’s gotten more experience using it
give him a damn break, if you were james and thousands AND thousands said that i’m highly sure you’d be annoyed, but i’m pretty sure he knows, and it’s his opinion, not “judgement” because you can do makeup however you want
Beauty blenders, setting spray, and highlighter weren’t really prevalent in 2011. I know you’re younger so you would have been like 11, but yeah that’s the tea.
I was just going to comment this same thing haha yea, that stuff wasn't really a part of everyone's regular makeup routine. Well, I personally still have a very minimal makeup routine.
MAC was all we had back in the day, i remember slapping foundation (powder and liquid) on my face, a ton of blush, mascara and heavy eyeliner and that was IT! no eyeshadow, no bronzer, none of that. jenna was ahead of her time in 2011 using brow products
Hell back in 2011.... I watched her video and loved it by the way, but when she said bronzer... I was like, "What the hell is that... and there different types of damn brushes, holy shit batman tricks or for kids I need to write this shit down...."
Just remember that your techniques were built on modern trends and her makeup tutorial was made 7 years ago. The highlighter trend was not until 2015 and people didn’t really know what setting spray did.
catnolia 333 Yep. Highlighter in it's current form didn't even exist. I remember being taught at beauty school just using dark and light concealer and foundation for highlight and contour. None of these made for purpose products. Gurus have it easy these days!!
Nobody used to wear highlighter at all. And because of these trends I see some teens wear just highligter on their face and not even blended. Just looks like you stained your face with something... Also I don't get how it became crucial to all make up looks all of a sudden.
I can't understand how all of these people on the comments say James was throwing shade at Jenna, she wouldn't be pissed at this at all, he wasn't disrespectful and I have no idea how anyone could see that.
It’s not that it’s disrespectful or purposeful but it’s like little jabs that just are easily noticed it’s not that he’s rude at all it’s just kinda comedic
I feel like it's just the vibe some people are getting from this video. Some of the things he said and they way he said them did sound a little condescending to me, but I don't think that was at all his intention. It's not so much that he was trying to be rude or disrespectful, but that some of the things he said could easily be perceived as such. I don't at all think he's a bad person, and he obviously likes Jenna or he wouldn't have bothered with this video. It's just that some of his comments left a bad taste in my mouth, as well as many others', especially considering the video is seven years old. But you're definitely right that Jenna wouldn't have a problem with this video at all, I'm sure she'd be laughing the whole way through.
I actually followed Jenna’s make up tutorial in 2011 when I was a tweeny high schooler and at the time (before beauty gurus were a major trend and life/face savers) it was a great look lol
Shanice Lopez same, I graduated 2012. I actually learned a lot from that video at the time. Even now I basically do this with more current colors (and less bronzer 😂)
Graduated in 2010 and except for Friday nights (i was a cheerleader so I had crazy team color eyeshadows and glitter) this is basically what I did throughout all of high school
i literally learned how to do my make up via this tutorial in high school!!! and still do pretty much this look on the daily when i have like 20 minutes to get ready we love the queen of speedy glam miss marbles
Says he loves Jenna a million times. Constantly compliments her as a person and youtuber. Mentions many times how her make up tips and explanations are extremely well done. Says it was one of the coolest experiences he's had on TH-cam. What the hell you all mad about??
What a great response! I'm a devoted long time lover of JMarb. My affection for J-Cha is nearing similar levels. Watching now and can't wait to see the results including her response. xOx
*@jamescharles* i would LOVE to see you glam her up but would also love for you to participate in one of her goofy character sketches; maybe even with Moq. And I personally would turn into a living rainbow if you chose to go by the name- "Lil Jimmy Cha-Cha". No mocking- you'd be amazing. #LilJimmyChaCha #JamesCharlesASLilJimmyChaCha 😁💖❤💛💚💙💜😁
Back in the beginnings of YT before all these beauty gurus existed, this was how kids learnt to do their makeup. There was no primer, no concealer or highlight, you just banged that foundation on, added a shit tonne of bronzer and blush, plus mascara and eyeliner (normally coloured - blue was my choice) and you were done. Jenna literally taught a 13 year old me how to do her makeup 10 years ago, honestly changed my life at such an impressionable and young age, and to this day some of the tricks she taught me I still use because i've never seen a better hack. EDIT: This was not a criticism of the video in any way, shape or form, it was purely to highlight for those in the comments who may be too young to know/remember that makeup and YT were very different 10 years ago, and while some of the products we use everyday today did exist, it was not the trend to use them, especially for kids.
I get where you're coming from but these products did exist then, just not in the same way they do now. She even says why she doesn't use primer so clearly she knew what it was.
we had michelle phan, but not a lot of people would wear those bold colors and style at the time. her tutorials are fun to watch and are soothing sometimes.
This was not a criticism of the video btw, I really enjoyed it, this was just to let people in the comments who may be too young to know that things were different 10 years ago, YT was very different, and makeup trends were different too.
Yeah like highlighter is amazing but I feel like this was before contouring at all was even popular, you just put your foundation and blush on your face and went out and you LIKED IT
Am I the only one who likes this look better than his usual makeup? Maybe I’m biased since I grew up in the 2000’s, but his eyes really pop here. And his face makeup is more subtle than usual. I’m obsessed with this look.
It’s so funny to me that teens and early 20 year olds get shook when they find out we didn’t use (I had never even heard of) highlighter and setting powder or spray. I was 19 when this video (Jenna’s) came out and remember watching it and using a lot of her tips. But yea highlighting, contoring, and baking... that’s all pretty new. Back in the day bronzer did it all, I was actually surprised she used blush cuz back then that was only used for special occasions and stage makeup for theater kids
A. Linback lol I'm 21 and I remember following this tutorial when Jenna first made it. I used this technique for years. Kinda irritating how condescending James is being about this when by the time this video was made he'd probably never even considered wearing making before.
I basically do my makeup how 2011 jenna does now in 2018. I use primer cause of my shit skin but that's the only extra product. I find highlight really tacky if done wrong or excessively so I don't use it and if I contour I contour with bronzer cause it's the only thing that looks right on my skin. I don't bake. Baking is really hard to be done correctly and I don't like seeing some people having dust clinging to their face cause they didn't brush it away properly. I might be hypercritical though. I'm no guru though I know next to shit! xD
I'm 20 now and Jenna was literally my idol when i was young, I'm the same! i've honestly only just gotten on the 'full glam' highlighter, contour etc. trend in the past couple of years. There just wasn't the same exposure to stuff like this back then! :) :)
lise leduc what the heck does being straight edge have to do with being stiff, drinking alcohol is literally one of the worst things you could do to your body.
I was gonna say... I didn't have highlighter and I knew nothing of setting spray until a few years ago lol in 2011 I think he was very young so he might not remember lmao
I was drinking while I watched this, and I am sure he was thinking he had to say this for legal reasons (whether this is true or not [who hasn't had a sip by his age]) since he is underage.
James, working women literally have like 10-15 mins to get ready and sometimes we do our makeup while driving. Aint nobody got time for 20 mins each eyebrow! I can still pull off a damn good look in less than 20 mins.
xxveexxceexx ikr? I take a maximum of 15 seconds per eyebrow, if I even do them at all. I don't understand this whole social media trend of using multiple products and spending multiple minutes on the eyebrows to make them super defined. It's totally inconvenient, and, especially as a natural blonde, I don't even think it looks good (it seems to look fine on people with very dark hair though).
Michaelea Froemke same! I bought it in like 2009 or 2010, but that’s because an Ulta employee introduced me to it and taught me how to use it. I think I also saw it on what not to wear.
@@smaxrob Just because something existed at a time doesn't mean it was popular or very known. Yes highlighter existed then, but it was almost exclusively used by professionals and for special events, most normal people didn't know about it. It didn't really blow up until around 2015 lol
YES! Setting powder, setting spray, highlighter and beauty blenders didn't exist 7 years ago. Also, the trends and "good look" was very different. What we thought looked good then, does not look equally as good now.
Eliza h. Hmm I agree but the funny part is that today's techniques have been around since the 80s. It's drag queen tricks. I'm all for makeup being used as expression, people can wear it however they want. But I don't think that a lot of these young girls know that they are in drag. Like "Instagram makeup" is full on drag. I think that it looks absolutely ridiculous lol. Like girl your face is already feminin, you're a woman, you don't need to contour that heavily. I'm all for the less is more technique. Accentuating the features, not creating new ones..
yeah, and even today's makeup isn't the only "right" way to do it. james is making it sound like ig makeup is the only way to do makeup correctly, but honestly real makeup artists hate these "beauty gurus"
shay aaa I agree with you. There is no right way to do makeup. That's the beauty of it.. I hate how he's just critiquing her the whole time and telling us what to do and what not to do and what's flattering and what's not.
I think I just watched him have a stroke for 20 minutes what- Also, this is how most of us do our makeup James my boy, hate to say it, but we sister struggling
I loved this video, it's my first time really watching him. I loved it because he was so helpful and went into detail about applying make up. Beautygurus on youtube fail at doing that
i think he discovered that makeup doesn't have to be so complicated..most of us keep it simple and look good. makeup tutorials that beautubers put out are just extreme. everything is glam af. just chill sometimes, man... sister, whatevs. peace out ;)
Jenna's video just shows how little product you actually need to look okay, and how much unnecessary hype corporations unburden on us to get out money for additional crap
7 years ago was a TIME for makeup. No concealer no highlighter people didn't set their face with translucent powder they used pressed powder in the same colour as their foundation. Shit was wild
armin-too-deep Contouring, baking, highlight and all the popular makeup trends today were still alive and well back then. Social media wasnt as big so the majority of the world didn't use as much makeup in the mainstream. I remember taking makeup classes exactly 7 years ago this year and being taught so many popular techniques we use today...people were just uninformed.
Jenna’s video of her following a James Charles video was so motivating and polite, this is just so judgemental. Like have a bloody laugh. Don’t attack my girl
THUMBS UP IF YOU WANNA SEE ME GLAM SISTER JENNA!
James Charles YAAS
edit: Ayy I got 92 likes woo that's the most likes I've ever got😂
James Charles YES QUEEN

draculol 💯💯💯
draculol
So true
Oh thank God, I was having a crisis thinking my makeup was terrible and everyone knew except me
Yee, kinda
Yes
Every time James says "sister" I imagine Julien saying "brother"😂
ARMYYYYY
Peace. like christine sydelko would say "brownity drownity" haha
*brother*
Andrea Celine Munoz *pops up a piece of paper saying brother*
spøøky selftitled ella I imagine Tana saying “shishter” 😂🤷🏻♀️
"I didn't realize how light this foundation was."
*literally the first time I have ever seen his foundation match his neck*
Sister James you are lighter than you think.
I couldn't help but think 🤔 exactly that haha
It's still too yellow
True but I also think he just has major anxiety about that time he did it SUPER white and the internet came for him hard 😂 I think that's just his insecurities
I think he knows his own body, thank you
Mo r his foundation wasn’t white in that photo though, it was just flashback so that makes no sense, he just has to not use shitty HD powders and he can still wear foundation that actually matches him instead of only painting for one angle from a camera.
"make sure that your skin is ready for makeup"
"by priming"
"by slapping it"
James: That foundation can cover anything. It can cover up all my scandals
😂😂😂 spoken like a true sister
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂🤣
Henna Sharee I actually laughed at that point
Henna Sharee 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Henna Sharee lol
this is how we did our makeup in the early 2000’s , James.
early 2000s? This video is from 2011
Hanna Opsata Sollie it took Jenna a while to get up with the trends because she isnt big on make up. Just look at her through back make up video. She wore crazy eyeliner in college
SO true. Highlight? Who is she? Setting spray? Who is she? Black eyeliner in the waterline and full coverage foundation, baby.
Hailey Lambres I pretty much still do it the same but with added highlighter now... hightlighter wasn't really a think until the last few yrs
Exactly!! No one was wearing 6lbs of makeup until 2013. I don’t understand why he was freaking out so much.
James Charles saying "same" to not being talented is like that one kid who says they failed a test after getting an 80.
JESUS CHRIST YES 😭😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It's called being asian, don't judge us
I mean, if you're asian.
Having 80% on your test is disgraceful!
Yes, you disgrace ling ling if you get a 80. (I love you if you get that reference)
being an asian means you fail if you get 100
sister James, 7 years ago (like Jenna in the video) we had no idea about setting spray, there was no such thing as too much bronzer or foundation that would match ur skin tone, highlighters were literally office supplies and baking was a way to make cookies 😂 we were cheap and unskilled sisters
Vikki199811 and don’t forget concealer to highlight your face was a skill used by makeup artists back then and not everyday people!
YEEESSSS!!
Truuuueeeeee!!!!!
This is so true!
Lol yesss I remember seeing this and now it’s totally different than what we do now I think she should do an updated one I know it’s not always her thing and she’s usually doing the beauty related videos for fun but I’d like to see compared to her old one makeup has changed so much

Kienna Panti d
YASßS
Kienna Panti “normal people “ she didn’t even put in highlight!
@@autumnrain2073 I honestly never did highlight ever still don't luhmao
He did it wrong- in 2011 nobody wiped the foundation off their lips before adding gloss, it added to the look😂
Laurie Doré yessssssss!!!!!!!!
Beige concealer dead lips were alllllll the rage
Omg I have to fight my concealer lips urges to this day 😂
There were plenty of folks who never got foundation on their lips in the first place, so not true.
still do lol
"Let's see if I can find a normal tutorial"
You're on the wrong channel for that, my dude
Winter X my first thought too! 😂😂😂
Winter X I was thinking the same....Jenna isn't normal 😂😂that's why I love her
We didnt have highlighter and setting spray 7 years ago.
There was setting spray 7 years ago... and there was highlight it just didn't become popular until a few years ago.
Anna Gems same ! Lol i did a black khol liner in my waterline and 1000 layers of mascara and some lipgloss
Daisy Hernandez for real!? I never seen in it stores. But maybe that was because i live in the netherlands we are behind on fashion trends in comparison to the us.

All that bronzer gave me flashbacks. I remember when bronzer was like the biggest trend.
I wasnt here yet...
Setting powder, like Coty airspun, has been around for a long time and widely used. (:
Truth.
!!!!! This
when you watch this on July in 2020 and realize he literally says his dream is collab with the person who conspired against him. breaks my heart.
I know, right? The person who u look upto does something against u is just heart breaking.
THIS
So true-
he was literally a teenager too 💔
Wait what happened?
every time he says sister I hear Julien in the back say brother 😂
Yassss
😂😂😂
• Samantha hahaha saaaammee😂😂
• Samantha literally sameeeeeee omg I’m doing
• Samantha same
I think this was the best look James has ever done tbh, The sultry sexy eyeliner and the natural eyes looks SO good on him omg.
Hailey Deokie All thanks to Jenna, who he so condescendingly criticised the entire time
It was kinda condescending but it was also a little wholesome and cute how he praised her for being helpful and accurate, because it's a truthful compliment. Jenna isn't a super-skilled makeup artist but she made a good, accessable tutorial and he commended her for it.
I can't follow all those 'beauty gurus' when I have 10 mins to get ready for work. But I can follow Jenna. She's the realest person ever
Seems legit
Mim 4 truth
I love how Jenna still had her Boston accent (:
Facts I love it lol
I think Jenna represents the more everyday makeup wearer. As much as I love beauty gurus, I sometimes feel like they're totally out of touch with the everyday consumer like me. Agree! I also don't want to spend more than 20 minutes doing makeup just so I can go to the grocery store
It’s insulting that he keeps calling her a beauty guru. She’s a beautuber
Chelle Castillo what
mriee that’s what jenna calls herself
The true name for beauty gurus!
She’s a beauty guru with a basketball game tomorrow
Haha
16:18 That mascara is still being sold though...2011 was only 7 years ago. It's in drugstores everywhere. It's called "The Falsies Volum' Express" by Maybelline

lmao the bottom only eyeliner. I can vividly imagine girls from my grade 7 class with bottom only eyeliner, super chunky mascara and white glitter eyeshadow.
I'm 31 and I low key still use my fingers to put on my foundation... 🤷🏻♀️
Omg you just DRAGGED me 😂😂😂 I put powder foundation on with a sponge and, if I had the nerve to, would like just my waterline. I’m also only a couple years older than him and it’s so interesting to see.
He mentioned he's a beauty guru so many times in this video I almost forgot he's a beauty guru.
Bbekah 😂😂😂
Do you think he does makeup like every day?
Bbekah yesss girl His arrogance was shinning in this vid. No wonder why all the dislikes on it
Poor James didn’t know how it was back in the day when highlighter and setting spray wasn’t a thing 😂
That's because he was an infant back then
Cheyanne Hadley he’s still pretty much an infant
I remember that you couldn't buy those products in the drugstore.

Isabella Cooper she’s the real beauty guru of youtube. she doesn’t even have to do it right and we all still love her lmao x
She doesn’t really do makeup like everyday. But Jenna is Jenna. She’s a Legend.
I hate how he gives "tips" afterwards saying what you could do instead
Ugh, James you don’t understand this was our LOOK in 2011. We weren’t technologically makeup advanced.
So true, this was what everyone wore in 2011. Especially the black eyeliner on the waterline! Those were the days.. 😂
Lol
give him a damn break, if you were james and thousands AND thousands said that i’m highly sure you’d be annoyed, but i’m pretty sure he knows, and it’s his opinion, not “judgement” because you can do makeup however you want
Are you kidding us?? All that are used centuries ago. Watch vintage make up tutorials from 20 years ago. All that are used. Ugh!
I think your brain is not technologically advanced lol
Sister: “I’m not going to judge her I’m not a beauty guru today”
2 minutes later: “sister noooo”
Kim true
Kim He wasn’t judging her. I think he was just making fun of how makeup was done as a whole 8 years ago.
Kim yes 😂
Just an innocent Pomegranate na dude he’s a shady beach
Kim Kardashian

It was so light until he bronzed everything
Gabriella Davidson that's his shade...
Gabriella Davidson yeah agree
Bruh none of the foundation he uses actually matches. He’s cool toned, not yellow.
No you are wrong
MAC was all we had back in the day, i remember slapping foundation (powder and liquid) on my face, a ton of blush, mascara and heavy eyeliner and that was IT! no eyeshadow, no bronzer, none of that.

Enijah Daisey he's 18

I remember just using lipgloss instead of lipstick too! And I used to put brozer everywhere. Makeup trends and products have definantly changed.
DOES THIS MEAN JENNA IS FINALLY A BEAUTUBER? 😭😭😭😭😭
Lex V No, she's too busy. She has a basketball game tomorrow 😂
💀💀💀
Lex V SHE FINALLY A BEUTUBER
Lex V OH HEEEEELLLLL YEAH
Jenna marbles IS the beauty community #Beautuber
I can't understand how all of these people on the comments say James was throwing shade at Jenna, she wouldn't be pissed at this at all, he wasn't disrespectful and I have no idea how anyone could see that.

dinosaur vlogs ikr!!
A lot of her fans are crazy. They are worse than the beyhive.
James: wears foundation that vaguely matches his neck
James:”is this flashback Mary”
I actually followed Jenna’s make up tutorial in 2011 when I was a tweeny high schooler and at the time (before beauty gurus were a major trend and life/face savers) it was a great look lol
YO SAME HAHAHAH!
I graduated in 2010 and this tutorial gave me actual flashbacks
Aj Campbell ikr thank you for this comment, people tripping for no reason
Youbtuber 😂
Poppy Williams Nice 👌I didn't even catch that.
i could totally picture jenna watching this and freaking out. YOU TELLING ME THATS WHY I HAVE THESE EYE WRINKLES?!?
Shannon Dean omfggg that’s what I was thinkingggg
BECAUSE SHE JUST SAID IT IN THE LAST VIDEO, I KNOW
Me when jenna talks: Volume is on max
Me when James talks: Down down down down
Same
i need to see Jenna getting her makeup done by James
Not A Nonce YES

AGREEEEE

I mean he look great at the end, so Jenna Marbles' tutorial 10/10 would recommend.
What a great response!
I'm a devoted long time lover of JMarb.
My affection for J-Cha is nearing similar levels.
Watching now and can't wait to see the results including her response.
xOx
I love the nicknames like JMarb and J-Cha
*@jamescharles* i would LOVE to see you glam her up but would also love for you to participate in one of her goofy character sketches; maybe even with Moq. And I personally would turn into a living rainbow if you chose to go by the name- "Lil Jimmy Cha-Cha". No mocking- you'd be amazing.

That was 2011 James highlighter and setting spray weren't a thing yet
Shreyaa Dani true that
Shreyaa Dani highlighter was a thing for ages it didn’t come out in 2015 you know
True but james was still a kid then and wasn’t wearing makeup so he wouldn’t know
What?I had setting spray in 2011 and I’m sure highlighter was around just not as big.
they definitely were a thing in 2011 and even earlier... but they weren't really a trend
TsumTsum Bubblegun I remember when Michelle Phan was everyone's makeup tutorial resource lol like we really didn't have a lot of options
Casey Jane thank god i never went through that phase lmao
This was not a criticism of the video btw, I really enjoyed it, this was just to let people in the comments who may be too young to know that things were different 10 years ago, YT was very different, and makeup trends were different too.
i do feel like you CAN use any brush for anything. I mean Tati used face brushes for her whole eye look and still looked better than I ever will
Mo Gajeski completely agreed 😂 You could blend your foundation out with an eyeshadow brush, it would just take longer 😂
It’s 2011, no one wore highlighter or setting spray lol hardly anyone knew anything about makeup
Bree Boo I was thinking that same thing when he was freaking out about that stuff😂😂😂
I know right Bree Boo
Yeah like highlighter is amazing but I feel like this was before contouring at all was even popular, you just put your foundation and blush on your face and went out and you LIKED IT
Bree Boo So true!
James finding out how broke people do their makeup 😂
lol broke people don't use mac
She also was probably kidding, since she's comedy.
Amy Lynn Hunt the video is just old, so makeup technology has improved a lot since she filmed it
I literally contour and highlight with an eyeshadow palette. So yes, I get whatchu sayin. 😂
Jenna is not broke tho
Jenna: * does video of one year ago *
James: * does video of seven years ago *
Briana Angeli she doesn't do makeup tutorials any more 🅱️
watchu mean
Right? He kept saying stuff like "I want to teach her how to do makeup right!" uh, she probably knows more now than she did when she was like 24.
D34TH T0KS1K I mean there's a difference in how makeup was done seven years ago when she did a recent one
Am I the only one who likes this look better than his usual makeup? Maybe I’m biased since I grew up in the 2000’s, but his eyes really pop here. And his face makeup is more subtle than usual. I’m obsessed with this look.
*k but sister james drop your skincare routine bc you are actually glowing ???*
Yesss! I had to learn how to contour / highlight fairly recently -- and i still don't know wtf "baking" is lmao
I'm no guru though I know next to shit! xD
And I'm 20
I'm 20 now and Jenna was literally my idol when i was young, I'm the same! i've honestly only just gotten on the 'full glam' highlighter, contour etc. trend in the past couple of years. There just wasn't the same exposure to stuff like this back then! :) :)
Jenna did a look that actually enhanced his features 😂
James: *freaks out like everything is terrible*
Also James: *looks pretty dang good. definitely better than me.*
Jenna: "I'm not even gonna put a base on my eyes..."
James: *shook*
I’d love to see James do a 2008 British make up tutorial featuring dream matte mouse, blue eyeshadow and a lip smacker 😂😂
ImoKaRo so real! 🙌🙌🙌
No, red lipstick! 😂
Sharpie brows, clumpy lashes (scandal eyes - Rimmel london) and foundation lips...2000s were a mess 😂😂😂
i still to this day use dream matte mouse LOL
Ashleigh Marshall omg I rember all of this
The drunk makeup tutorial is iconic and it’s a missed opportunity to just not take yourself so seriously and do that one
jojokinn I'm pretty sure he doesn't drink
jojokinn yesssss he's so stiff
jojokinn he isn't of age to drink soooooo probs not the best to put on the internet
Kristen Hutchins you don’t have to be drunk to follow the tutorial jeez
lise leduc what the heck does being straight edge have to do with being stiff, drinking alcohol is literally one of the worst things you could do to your body.
The title should be "I watched a tutorial and judged the whole thing"
Elise Klausing don’t take everything so seriously. They’re friends.
the intro was legit hyping her up lmao
It was really bad tho. Like no one would do their makeup like that nowadays
@@SasukeUchihaOfTheSound well duh its almost 10 years ago
@@TheRisingIcarus I'm aware. But he is just pointing out that this would be a mediocre look at best in today's standards.
This is the best that James has looked tbh
Maria Maxey so real 😂
Maria Maxey agree.
😂😂😂
Facts. 👌👌😂 maybe he should let her give him some tips. 😂
Tea ☕🐸
I think its hilarious that this is probably the best that James has ever looked.
Work Jenna.
Aurunia ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ stfu
Ana Marie Aisha Sacro its true tho
Ana Marie Aisha Sacro Calmmmm
It’s definitely not lol
It’s tru tho he looks the best he ever has
This video shows just how much makeup has changed in 7 years
who’s here after jenna marbles quit youtube...?
Me

**clicks on drunk tutorial** realizes what he's gotten himself into.
**clicks different tutorial**
When she started slapping her face I dieeed 😂😂😂
LMAO 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
When she started slapping her face- HE died 😱
Yes this is actually how we did our make up in 2011. 😂
I was gonna say... I didn't have highlighter and I knew nothing of setting spray until a few years ago lol
in 2011 I think he was very young so he might not remember lmao
Sydnie Dean Nikki didn't even use that much makeup in 2011. Lol.
Still do. Very simple
When I realized 2011 was 7 years ago I was shook
AngelTM me too! It still feels like maybe three years ago at most.
AngelTM fking SAME 😝
This taught you that not caring sometimes makes things easier
why is he surprised that jenna knows what she’s doing just bc she isn’t a “beauty guru” doesn’t mean she doesn’t know what she’s doing smh
James: I’ve never gotten drunk
Me: iVe nEvEr gOttEn DruNk
like boy ur friends with tana mongoose youve def gotten drunk by standing next to her
Anna Smith mongoose 😭😂😂😂
i HaVeNt EiThEr
I was drinking while I watched this, and I am sure he was thinking he had to say this for legal reasons (whether this is true or not [who hasn't had a sip by his age]) since he is underage.
titi4112 lol I should have done the same thing!
I really like this look. Natural looks great on you.
Diana Fieck it looks better than his tutorials, in all honesty. Not sure what he's complaining about. She just made him look way better.
I was looking for this comment. So true
natural.... lol. If there is that much foundation, it's not natural lol.
natural? where?

no, she just made him look different, which is interesting. it's not better or worse.

The word sister being said so many times makes me feel like we're in a nunnery. I can actually visualize the opening to The Sound of Music!
Tracy Davies lmao
Jenna is a BEAUTUBER the beauty community is *QUAKING*
Right? And he looks fine TBH, he shouldn't be complaining.
Preach bby
xxveexxceexx Truth!
xxveexxceexx just don’t put makeup on
He sounds like one of those kids that dont know about floppy disks or video cassettes
Jenna: "make sure your skin is ready for makeup"
James: "by primer"
Jenna: *starts slapping face* 😂😂
James: o_o; - lmao. Literally my favorite part.
BRO YOU HAVE 666 LIKES. I’M SCERD.
I'm dying
bro i remember when highlighter became a thing but it definitely didnt happen in 2011 lmfao
I remember buying hilighter before 2011, it just wasn't as trendy
@@seirglo no but you obviously are, as highlighter didn't become popular until about 2015/2016
@@moymoyap lmao no... we had highlighter in 2008 already...
It didn't really blow up until around 2015 lol
quick reminder that seven years ago makeup wasn’t the same as it is today 💁🏻♀️🤗
Acacia Rutledge wait what...
+AESH what
YES! Setting powder, setting spray, highlighter and beauty blenders didn't exist 7 years ago. Also, the trends and "good look" was very different. What we thought looked good then, does not look equally as good now.
Exactly
I don't know how many times I screamed at the screen because James was complaining about certain products not being a thing in 2011!!!!
Yeah makeup is always changing. In 8 years today’s makeup and techniques are gonna seem ridiculous
Eliza h. They're ridiculous now...
Eliza h. True
I didn’t know contouring was a thing in 2011, I didn’t start contouring till 2014 so that’s wild
cathy o'neill makeup artist have been doing it since like the 20s
Countouring has been a thing forever b
It was Hollywood's little secret
I don’t think highlight existed either 😹
Christina Diana highlight back in the day was more using different shades of foundation to make parts of your face brighter.
"where's the concealer?"
BOI DO YOU NOT SEE THAT THICC FOUNDATION YOU DO NOT NEED CONCEALER
Ziaberry hahaha helll yeaahhh
Ziaberry thicc foundation

I think I just watched him have a stroke for 20 minutes what-
Also, this is how most of us do our makeup James my boy, hate to say it, but we sister struggling

MrsStarKey hahah totally!
I loved this video, it's my first time really watching him. I loved it because he was so helpful and went into detail about applying make up. Beautygurus on youtube fail at doing that
Don’t we all miss those days

i think he discovered that makeup doesn't have to be so complicated..most of us keep it simple and look good. makeup tutorials that beautubers put out are just extreme. everything is glam af. just chill sometimes, man... sister, whatevs. peace out ;)
True the Jenna makeup tutorial he did was literally the one that taught me the basics of how to do makeup without making it too complicated
Sova Mau no offense but it’s not the most natural or simple look since of how full coverage it is😂
Nicole Harding hahhaha true
Jenna's video just shows how little product you actually need to look okay, and how much unnecessary hype corporations unburden on us to get out money for additional crap
Brave Kate teaaa
7 years ago was a TIME for makeup. No concealer no highlighter people didn't set their face with translucent powder they used pressed powder in the same colour as their foundation. Shit was wild
armin-too-deep Contouring, baking, highlight and all the popular makeup trends today were still alive and well back then. Social media wasnt as big so the majority of the world didn't use as much makeup in the mainstream. I remember taking makeup classes exactly 7 years ago this year and being taught so many popular techniques we use today...people were just uninformed.
King Kylie Fiercebush or didn’t care about doing their makeup hahaha
Jenna’s video of her following a James Charles video was so motivating and polite, this is just so judgemental. Like have a bloody laugh. Don’t attack my girl
Obsessed with how well this shows how much makeup has changed in the last 7 years. Jenna is doing hers how we all did haha
I still do my makeup like that.... 😂
As someone who was 17 when Jennas tutorial was created, we didn't do all that extra shit no contour highlight setting spray etc. Calm down Beyonce.
Skysthelimit212 she did do contour in her video though.
except she legit contoured and used the terms contour. fail.
ngumina1 she did, but it wasn't common back then
