Episode 38 of my video train blog series. In this episode: 2013 Piedmont Pilgrimage info, layout work progress report. More videos at www.ericstrains.com
The trestle bridge is going to be a great addition. Just a thought, if you put it to the rear of your access, you will have to lean over it to get to the rear of your layout. Great update, you have a lot on your plate. Engine shed, waterfall, pond, tunnel portals, wow. I can't wait to see the progress. It's going to be amazing. Good luck.
Eric, Wonderful blog. I`m the guy who mentioned the display shelving problems here in California due to earthquakes. I would be a nervous wreck doing what you done, but as you said earthquakes are rare in your area. I have locked plexiglass cases for the locomotives I display, even then, we had a small earthquake about 4 weeks ago, and my MTH Yellowstone almost broke through the case at about the height of 5 feet. I have since taken most of my heavy steam locomotives down from display-scary!
Great video Eric! Thanks for your review between Atlas and Ross switches. I've always wondered about Ross switches. As for the Diesel engine house, Almost Famous Builders had a real nice modern one with overhead crane, lights and a service island in the center on Ebay for about $500. I wanted it really bad, but didn't have the money at the time.
From Norwich, Great Britain.Hi Eric, it would be great to pop over to visit you, on your open day and see your railway layout, but there`s quite a large pond between you and us,and for those that don`t know of it , it`s the Atlantic Ocean! Nice to see your new project`s underway. Have fun on your open day, and don`t forget to count all your trains before and after. Always a pleasure to give good feedback.
Eric, you're trains and set up are really cool. I wish I had the three things a train layout requires: space, time, and expendable money. I've seen how much some of these things go for and I know even little trees can be expensive. I appreciate your passion and dedication to your layout.
There are rails on the shelves that the engines sit on. They are specifically made the hold O-Scale trains. Plus, they shelves are actually angled back slightly.
Hey, Eric, I'm actually building a diesel shop from scratch too on my friend's O gauge layout. I won't be as realistic as yours, in fact it'll have more of a toy look to it, but when it's done it will also be my first scratch-built building.
Great video as usual Eric. I'd love to make it to see your layout in person one day. I really love that pine wood shelf with the SD70's! I recently finished an Altoona Model Works car shop kit, and It looks great. I can't wait to see how your scratch built engine shop comes together! Will you be super detailing the interior? I can't wait for the grade crossing! Thanks for sharing, have a great day! Ethan
I have the same shelves Eric, and I do live in California, and they have survived a couple earthquakes just fine. When the shelves are attached to the wall, they do have a slight angle towards the wall. Like you said, if we have a big earthquake....my trains are the least of my concerns.
Eric for your grade crossings, HO Scale crossing signals look better on O gauge layouts because of the fact that they look the right size, I hope you get this tip before you make your purchase.
Hey, Eric, have you ever thought of using the maintenance facility as a base for a steam engine used in modern day like your PS-4? They have something very similar for the 261 in Minneapolis. I think it would be a really cool use for the structure along side the normal diesel maintenance.
hey eric, we have never used that plastic piece on our Atlas switches. we have never had a derailment caused by a pick up roller catching the middle rail.
What did you use for the retaining walls behind your future diesel shop? My future layout will be based in southern Minnesota along the Mississippi river where there is a lot of limestone. Stone retaining walls will be natural for where my layout is based. I enjoy your videos. I want to build a realistic layout but have mostly Marx trains, I cannot afford Lionel. I think that a realistic layout, with less than realistic train will make for an interesting layout.
Breathtaking stuff. Wig wag signals might be a fun addition to grade crossings. By the way, have any of the other postwar locos been converted to TMCC, yet? Amazing progress, though.
Eric, Super great Layout. I love the work that you've done. I do have one question tho. I am working out a design for my own "O" gauge layout. I have yet to really narrow down what brand of track I want to use. I know that with your layout, most, if not all, of your motive power is modern equipment with traction tires. I deal with mostly Post-war Lionel using Magnatraction. Can you tell us why you chose Atlas brand track, even tho you replaced a switch with a Ross switch, over any of the others? And, is the Atlas track magnetic to work with the older Lionel magnatraction?
Eric, you have been very busy! Your new work on the layout looks great! I like your ideas of your diesel shop. It's going to be awesome! I wish I could come to your open house, but I can't. I'll still be harvesting corn in November. Does your friend Bill have his layout on youtube? Keep up the great work Eric! Your layout has come a long way since your first video a few years ago....lol!!!
Do a review of one of the burlington's zephyrs you can get the lionel 2013 sing nature edition you can get that item and get one of them there's three called : the CBQ pioneer , mark twain and the lionel lines and you can get one to review also there's 2013 Christmas catalog !
Question where do you buy figures for your layout that our figures other than just passenger figures to use and passenger cars I’m looking for people that are standing around maybe some workmen are hanging out at box car but I have not been able to find them
Great video as always I love the Katy sd70 even though it is mth. If you can make more videos of how you are building the diesel engine shop while you are painting and putting the structure together also if you could just check out our TH-cam page it is not like your layout but I just want if you can comment how we are doing with our layout thanks
Does your whole set up have it's own Insurance Policy? or does it fall under your home owners Policy? You easely have $200'000 worth of model rail road!
Hi Eric, excellent video. Particularly interested in seeing progress on the diesel shop. I'm interested in doing something similar. In your test-fit of the diesel shop, it didn't appear to have inspection pits. Curious if you were including inspection pits? I was sort of thinking of building one with inspection pits and overhead fluorescent lights using EL Wire. Food for thought for you... See elwireonline(dot)com.

Eric you have the best beard in model railroading. Breathtaking layout!

Eric thank you for taking me back to my childhood. It is always wonderful to see your progress on your layout.
Fantastic video Eric. Lots of good information and as always some really great scenery updates.
Hey Eric i'm an HO guy and love your videos thanks man.. you really put your time and effort in to making these.

Great blog video Eric! I like the Diesel shop so far, looking forward to it's completion. Your shelf of SD70s looks great as well. Thanks for sharing!

No problem. I can't wait for your open house, it should be a lot of fun!
It's in the video at 2:58. It's a custom built steel trestle from Stainless Unlimited.

I hadn't planned on doing motorized doors, but that's a neat idea. Thanks.

Very nice stuff Eric! I'm sort of thinking about switching to On30 for my 8x12 layout.
Great video Eric the layout looks amazing

Awesome layout
Maybe get a construction crew people pack and put them up around the modern diesel shop location to make it look like part of the layout.
you should make a little speeder shed next too the track it would look cool with one of your tmcc speeders
Good luck on the open house!
Also forgot to point out that you layout looks incredible
Thanks, Brad!
It says SD70MAC under the cab as well as on the box.
hey eric, we have never used that plastic piece on our Atlas switches. we have never had a derailment caused by a pick up roller catching the middle rail.
Seen it done on a HO layout but are you planning to do like roller doors on your engine ship to go up and down with a motor or your controller

You won't be disappointed with the Tortoise.... you'll end up replacing all the switch machines with them eventually.
Just A BIG THANKS

Good work nice update
Nice Dude!! Do a Review on another Diesel
Great video, the layout is incredible. What kind of signals for the crossing do you plan on using?
Thanks!
I agree on the Atlas switches
nice layout
great layout, by any chance do u have any videos on wireing for your layout?
Awesome, Eirc! What is the name of the tresle brand

hey eric, are you going to have a triangular beam roof for the diesel shop

I will review one of the zephyr's as soon as I have one.
Hey eric the dz1000 works better with the mth aiu the 2500 is realy for the lionel switch controller your layout is looking good
Do a review of one of the burlington's zephyrs you can get the lionel 2013 sing nature edition you can get that item and get one of them there's three called : the CBQ pioneer , mark twain and the lionel lines and you can get one to review also there's 2013 Christmas catalog !
Eric, how do you actually secure the large steel trestle to the main train table? I can't imagine you let it rest via its own weight?
Isn't there some way that you coud make that 5ft section removable for access to the rest of the layout?
for one of your structures you should have a hobby shop, called "eric's train"
Question where do you buy figures for your layout that our figures other than just passenger figures to use and passenger cars I’m looking for people that are standing around maybe some workmen are hanging out at box car but I have not been able to find them
Hanging on the side of the box car

I was wondering, how many of the other model railroads on the Piedmont Pilgrimage do you visit?
Will the doors work on the diesel shed
Do you love in Atlanta , you do I live there to
Mr. Eric I am a model railroader myself and I am looking for some HO scale PRR passenger coaches
couldn't the trains sitting on the track for a while cause flat spots
