The wordless communication between two great artists as they looked at each other near the end of the song is just spectacular. And when his voice lets loose and soars, it makes me weak in the knees.
I was there.this was my favorite of the night. Josh is absolutely awesome! Seeing him sing live is a must, recordings cannot capture the beauty of his voice Brought me to tears.
Josh said Aretha called him to her dressing room, they ran through the song once and that was all the rehearsal they had. He said he just stood back and let her sing and jumped in when she stopped. He was thrilled to sing with the Queen of Soul.

I know, I am late to the party, but I love this song, and this rendition was great. There was a better spirit there and a soulfulness and Josh Grobran seems to be a loving and giving person. Ms Franklin comes from a gospel background and that is what she brought to the song, regardless. So the song was not about the singers singing it, but the spirit of message of the song. I loved it.

Wow, what is all the fuss about? That was SO much fun! The fabulous JG sharing a stage with ARETHA! Who cares if she didn't rehearse. She added her own beautiful self and awesomesauce to the performance and made it totally memorable. LOVE the smile she gave him at the end. @straightarrow372 said it well.

Even the most beautiful flower withers in the end. Aretha is an icon and was the greatest soul/r&b singer around the 1960's/70's/80's but man she must be nearing 80 now and she can't possibly sing the way she did when she was in her twenties. You must admit whe was out of key more than once but Josh sang brilliantly with her which must've been a great moment for him too.. But dude where have u been the last few years? Josh is the greatest singer this decade and we aint seen nothin yet.!
I love both of them and both of them have unique voices that are undescribable...but especially if you sing a duett you need to have some timing and aparently that was missing...I can just imagine how breathtaking their performance would have been if they would have rehearsed before...hopefully they will give it another try in the future.
Wow it truly takes someone like Josh to make a performance like that as good as it was. Yes I understand it could have been better but with Aretha not showing up for rehearsals, they did a pretty fantastic job:) just my opinion though and I understand that is not the view of most ppl in here. But in my eyes it was amazing :)

@LifeSux79 I think it's just that her style is very different from his. It's odd when people of very different styles sing together. Josh puts himself in this type of situation fairly frequently. It doesn't seem to bother him. He's a fusionist and a musical adventurer. He likes to put things together that come from different cultures. This duet is a musical metaphor to a diverse culture.
well if i can my two cents..i think it was a clear lack of preparation but i mean if you dont know the style of music aretha sings then say that but dont hate on the fact that she stayed true to her voice. she;s a soulful singer so she sang it that way. she didnt just demolish it the way you all make it sound lol.
The song is Josh's song. It is obvious Aretha missed rehearsal. For those of us who know the song, her performance is far less than stellar. If you don't know the song & have no musical background, you might think it's ok. I think it is the most uncomfortable I have ever seen Josh. It is a beautiful song and Aretha did it no justice... Josh would never disrespect her and felt it was an honor to perform with her. But let's face it, home girl blew it. Sorry. And what was with that dress?

hmmmm....i love aretha, really i do and i expected a really good duet when I heard they'd done this together....but i was bitterly disappointed. it seemed aretha hardly knew the song, and josh even had to cover for her when she missed the first line! sorry, but i prefer josh singing this by himself ANY day!!!
It wasn't a stellar performance on Aretha's part. It seemed she didn't know the words to the song! It would be interesting to hear Josh's take on the performance but we all know he'd never say anything negative about anyone. He's it too polite!

She was very unprofessional: if you're doing a duet you should work before the duet. She turned the song upside down. She left him in a bad place. She was very smug, she didn't respect her pears. She was very full of herself. On the other hand he is always nice; you can see he's embarraced (yet thrilled, to be singing with her) because he didn't know what she would do next, she totally messed up and was very desrespectful! And you can see how she despise him! She looked so bored... He never badmouthed anyone; she was often a real ass to other musicians.
