Dan Heymann, Ian Cohen, Peter Cohen recorded the song in 1985. What many however do not know is that the original song incorporating strands of "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" when at the time public performance of our now beautiful national anthem could lead to summary arrest. The racist government was to st-pid to realize that the it was in the song. Heymann & the Cohen’ we’re absolutely brilliant
Was in the original version when Nkosi Sikelel i'Afrika was banned in SA. Weeping, together with Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning, are two of my favourite protest songs

you all probably dont give a shit but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my password. I would appreciate any help you can give me
I admired Josh Groban that he was fast enough to cover up Vusi's lyric part at 2:10, when Vusi looks like suddenly he could not recall the lyrics. It has clearly shown how good they know each other as friend, understand each other and able to perform on stage in front of the audience. Nice performance.
Bright Blue did it first under more dangerous circumstances. Luckily the NP were too stupid to understand just how subversive this song was. To my mind it contributed greatly to the 72% 'Yes' vote in the 1992 referendum of white voters that stopped apartheid. th-cam.com/video/GeecXiqNzWA/w-d-xo.html
This is a heart breaking song but so much truth in this song josh is a outstanding singer his song will touch your heart and soul this is a beautiful song and Josh and his friend peformed it perfectely
i thought the same thing a bit later on when he helped out vusi again. such a nice guy and you can see that they really like to sing together. Love josh groban.
I cannot get enough of this.. remember this new year that suffering and disparity still exists all over the world. Give of ourselves... as JG has and continues to do. Hope he inspires you as he has me... Love your fellow man! Happy 2011
Josh Groban voix et le chant nous transporte dans un lieu de lumière et des ténèbres, le Bien et le Mal. Sa musique peut nous montrer ce qui se trouve en nous-mêmes, les gens autour de nous, et le monde.
Hi Londiwe, actually this song was written by a guy called Dan Heymann, a 21 year old unwilling conscript in the South African Defense Force. He wrote it (while still in the army, I believe) to protest against being drafted to fight against his fellow countrymen. I think that this makes the song even more powerful, as it was written from the perspective of one who (albeit very reluctantly) was actually part of the 'fear and the fire and the guns'. I think its great that Josh Groban has brought it to a wider audience, but I wish he would acknowledge where it came from and the full meaning of the song. Dan Heymann recorded it with his band Bright Blue, and they sneaked in the melody from Nkosi sikele iafrika which was banned at the time. This song had enormous resonance in South Africa in the 80's (from your pic I'm assuming you are too young to remember that far back, apologies if not!).
From Wikipedia: The song was a pointed response to the 1985 State of Emergency declared by President P.W. Botha, which resulted in "large-scale killings of unarmed and peaceful demonstrators against racial discrimination and segregation in South Africa." Defiantly, the song incorporated part of the melody to Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, the anthem of the anti-apartheid African National Congress. "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" was banned at the time, and inclusion of even the melody violated the law.
Sisonke:you do know that it was in the original version by Bright Blue too? :-) Got past the censors at SABC it did, in the time when it was still banned.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion as to whose performance they prefer. I like Josh's. That he does this song means many who would not have other wise heard it were introduced to it. To assume his only agenda was to make money from this is so way off base. Recording this,he knew he may lose a part of his fan base. Josh has his own foundation that supports children in Africa, His caring is real. So is his talent and his heart.
Agreed. One of my all time favourite songs. 35 years on and it still brings me to tears. Started watching tonight with the Stellenbosch Uni choir, then the original video with Bright Blue and now I am here 😊 🇿🇦
@david640 and i like how you keep coming back to the video to see if ppl like wat you said.. i didnt reply so you must love this version of the song to come back n have it play again.
NicksaAngel its a south african national anthem look it up on goole and it will be translated there for you but it basically means God Bless africa(Nkosi Sikelel' i Afrika)
As a South African I have my good and bad days. This is a good day.
Wow - I got shivers down my spine when the choir came in with Nkosi Sikelel'i Afrika. This entire rendition was beautiful and heartfelt. Great song.
African choirs are the best. Do you know the Ndlovu Youth Choir?

This song (among others) will bring relief to the mourning in the weeks and months to come. As powerful and uplifting as ever.
Its what makes south Africa great. Our beautiful country is worst off. We wanted freedom but this freedom is a face off worse inequalities
Great performance Vusi ! (Josh was pretty good as well !)

Vusi Mahlasela has a rather unique voice. What's his singing voice like?
The guitarist is an American, Tariqh Akoni, chair of the guitar department of the Los Angeles Conservatory of music and Josh's music director.
Song written by Dan Heymann, Ian Cohen, Peter Cohen & Tom Fox recorded it in 1985.
The band was called Bright Blue.
