I just want a Android/Netflix certified streaming box with a RK3588 processor
That would be a dream...
The only consumer android box I know with the rk3588 is the H96 Max V58 , but I don't know if the widevine support etc is good enough. And even it is , 170ish for the 4gb one and 190ish for the 8gb one is a lot of money for a box with a rockchip chipset, because Rockchip reviews complain often about their support and updating. So you might buy a disappointment.
@@erikkarsies4851 There is also Mekotronics R58 which i have found. I don't think updates are really a problem, for a flagship cpu they will get that, and who cares about updates if it is working as intended? I think updates are overrated in such devices, but i really think noone will leave a flagship hanging without them. The only problem is the widevine support which is L3 of course. The price is okay i think, because you pay more for the nvidia shield too with 3 gb of max ram, and the pure cpu power of rk3588 is at least double of tegra x1+ and about the same gpu power. So it would be the dream with widewine l1 support i think.
@@erikkarsies4851 Yeah, there are currently no RK3588 streaming boxes that have the correct certifications for steaming. And while yeah it’s expensive, if it had the correct certifications it would blow the Nvidia Shield Pro out of the water for the same price. I am just looking for a good streaming/emulation box.
@@erikkarsies4851 The h96 max and chinese tv boxes like them are filled with malware. Its very unwise to use them at all.
If you root the Android can you not change the build prop device fingerprint to a fingerprint of an official device to bypass Google certification and maybe get those streaming apps working? I've done this on older versions of Android on TV boxes out of China that weren't recognised as official Google devices. There's even a Magisk module that can do this.
Probably won't replace my Nvidia Shield. The AI upscaling it can do cannot be matched in my opinion, as far as I know.
shield recently stopped working reliably with chromecast audio groups. time to replace it with something else but I agree not this.

Great video. I haven't managed to get 4k 60 natively on Pi5. Performance is very poor on TH-cam and H264/H265 is hit and miss. Actually it's miss and miss, neither play 4k without substantial dropped frames/ stutters. I think it's because Pi doesn't support on the chip and expects the processor o do all the heavy lifting 😒😒
The Pi 5 only has h265 hardware decoding. TH-cam for instance streams 4k in VP9 or AV1, so the Pi 5 will struggle with that.

Can you add plugins in your chosen browser?
On PC I'm always using "enhanced-h264ify" which allows me to block among h264, VP8, VP9 and AV1 the codecs I don't want get served by YT, maybe that helps?
I tried both konstakang Pi 5 builds and just couldn't get it to do much more than boot up. Couldn't get google play going. Looks great and I'd like to try android on PI (thanks to your videos) but I think I'll wait til it's a little easier to get up and going.
Android can be fussy with displays. If you are using anything but sd cards you need to change config.txt

@@leepspvideo The steps for enabling the store once I got the OS running was the part I was failing at. I was having trouble finding the correct files I needed to write in recovery mode for the Android OS item because I wanted to try Arknights on my PI5. At the time of your video about it, Konstakang's site had placeholder text for some of the required files and I haven't revisited to see if that got fixed.

I've been trying to solve this issue by myself, however will get to deadends with my level of knowledge :D Also noticed many other people are having same issue. It got to do with RAM64 versus 32-bit older version of rasps where most of the guide were made for, but not for a 64-bit...

can't we buy the decoder for the different video formats? remember seeing something that worked off the Pi's serial number to prevent piracy of the decoder ...but this was years ago.

@@AndrewTSq yeah about that time frame, but from what I was reading the RPi5 (and the 4) both could decode video formats but RPi didn't want to include the codex in the system b/c it would have made it cost more, a cost schools would need to pay, keeping the Pis out of some of the hands of children.

The clockwork pi Ucolsole might be what you are looking for.
It has a keyboard, trackball, decent screen, speakers and headphones port, and comes in either a CM4 model, or a Raspberry pi Zero.

Why would you need to go into the pi settings in Konstakang and change that mouse setting? I have the same remote and once you toggle the air mouse function on the mouse button on the remote, the back button should work just fine, is that a limitation of the Pi 5's version of android? Because that works fine on Konstakang's Android TV for Pi 4 for me.

hi i need some help with using my external hard drive on raspberry for lineage OS. Cant get find any forum or discussion I can find details about. I cant acess the drive on the device even though I view it. The external drive is 2TB storage with NTFS format. Should I install any driver for it?
Android usually wants fat32. Raspberry Pi imager will format it as fat32 regardless of capacity

Do you have the Orange Pi 5? Can that handle 4k60 streaming in Android? The Nvidia Shield TV from 2015 already was able to do that in 2017.
The issue is mostly with the widevine support. The apps don’t allow streaming or are capped at a low resolution. The RK3588 can handle 8K
@@leepspvideo It can handle a 8k output resolution like the pi4 can handle a 4k resolution . But I haven't seen any reviewer streaming 8k30 to it yet? Even playback from youtube in a browser in 4k60 seems problematic. Btw a bit strange : First you were planning to mirror to the 4k tv but quickly you were back to the 1080p monitor? So all the mirroring was just in 1080p even if you play a 4k vid on the device which was mirrored to the Pi5

Does the Freeview Play or app work on android 13 tv? Running the app on Android 14 but it’s not really well optimised.
It probably works, although Freeview play relies on all the other streaming apps when you try and launch any catchup programs. ITVX didn’t work for me

Depends how you set it. I usually use a usb sound card when screen recording. HDMI audio is selected by default

Without a higher level of Widevine support the official streaming services will still be low resolution

If it’s wired just plug it in. Wireless ones will need a dongle.

Pretty useles. Any tv box with 905x4 is much cheaper, but can do the same and even better. It can be used out of the box and it has an ir remote.
Many have terrible software and no official L1 Widevine support.
@@leepspvideo I agree, but luckily there is a multivendor and multiplatform project slimboxtv which improves most of the disadvantages for the bunch of devices.
What about L1 Widevine, for me it is useless nowadays, here in Russia, cause local streaming providers don't use it because of well known causes. Everything works here fine in 4k without it. But I guess it's real on slimboxtv as well, I saw some threads on xda/4pda about drm for android tv boxes.
It's 2024 : 1080p streaming box? LOL That's not impressive! Really I was enthusiastic until it turned out that 4K60 video playback isn't supported good enough on the Pi5.
The casting was 4k streamed as 1080p
Things would look different if Alphabet and the Pi Foundation would offer an official ROM.

@@linuxgamer323 my google tv 4k was $50, plays everything nicely in 4k60, or if you might get lucky and find a Jetson nano for similar price, my 4GB Jetson Nano is a lot better at videoplayback like on TH-cam for example.
