Webster was very nationalistic and therefore anti British, which influenced his spellings and pronunciation, so I assume he used the french pronunciation for that reason. Top tip: Never say you're full of spunk to a British audience if you make to avoid a lot of sniggers as it's slang here for sperm.😁
