    What are some of the top things you don't think a buyer should worry about when purchasing an RV? Let us know in the comments below if you've thoughts on this latest video! - Jason and Abby

      Don’t worry about factory “solar prep”. Whatever extra wiring they ran to the roof will be too light gauge to run a true off-grid solar package anyway.

    • @RVMiles
      @RVMiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! About the only benefit is if they actually ran a conduit or channel you can send wiring through.

    Great video!
    1st I agree NEVER PAY MSRP!
    But let me clarify
    MOST brands you can take Atleast 25% off MSRP as a starting point.
    MSRP $100,000
    Sale Price $75,000.
    This way you know if your getting a great price.
    I’ve seen 30% off MSRP or greater!
    It really does depend on brand. And how good of a negotiator you are 😜
    Now with that said a Tiffin or Newmar your not getting 25%off you will get 10-15%
    And a Leisure Travel Van??? Your Paying Full BLOWN MSRP!
    So The manufacture does have something to do with it… But again long story short good rule of thumb whatever the MSRPS take at least 25% off

    If there is a tv, make sure it is large enough to enjoy. Dumb tvs can be changed to smart tvs by adding a smart DVD player. So we just make sure the TV space is large enough to upgrade if needed. I like TV after a full day exploring playing or if it is too hot outside.

    I agree about the outdoor speakers. We generally boondock so maybe it's different for people in rv parks, but I don't want to blast music when I'm in nature! We've never once used our outdoor speakers when we've been camping.

    What about offering a dog tie-out on the trailer? Last time I checked there is always something to leash a dog to on a trailer or in the campsite while we set up. If manufacturers want to appeal to dog-loving RVers, how about offering a built-in screen door guard or remote temperature monitoring system?

    • @RVMiles
      @RVMiles  ปีที่แล้ว

      YES! I think they spend more money advertising their leash ties than the actual anchors cost them. I love when they're screwed to the tongue of a standard trailer. I'm like - couldn't I just hook the leash to the tongue?

    On the outdoor speakers: they can also be a leak source. I'm about to buy a 2016 Winnebago Trend 23L and the outdoor speakers is a very common leak point. I will be replacing those straight away with higher quality, marine grade speakers and really focusing on sealing them well. Additionally...do your camp neighbors really want to hear your music? I like the bluetooth speaker way better than outdoor speakers on the side of the RV.

  • @elainevegan5386

    Regarding size, it’s important to consider the places you may visit most often. It’s not just campsites, it’s also about scenic roads. So unless you tow, size matters for that too. I’ve owned my RV less than a year and already at least 4 roads where RVs longer than 24’ aren’t allowed.

    • @elainevegan5386
      @elainevegan5386 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also you may still find campsites but options for larger RVs are more limited than for smaller RVs. So during busy times you might get locked out of the campsites you want and be forced to compromise by staying further away, paying higher prices, etc

    Oh I have to COMPLETELY disagree regarding the fireplace! In the colder months of Spring, or Fall in the Midwest we barely use any propane for our 30' travel trailer because we keep the electric fireplace on at night. We might hear the furnace kick on 3-4 times a night for just a couple minutes to keep up, rather than constantly cycling. Why pay for propane when you have a built in heat source already?

    The multiple TVs in RVs is way overrated. If you have kids, that's one thing. But couples & solo drivers only want/need 1-2 TVs max. Can't stand TVs eating up cab/dinette window space or cab bunk space. Put it over the door, kitchen wall, or do a televator. I'm also happier seeing the outside 'Tailgater' kitchen turned into a washer/dryer unit. Heck, the plumbing is already there.

    Just one point about length and getting into some National or State Park campsites: I can fit my 25' trailer into a 25' or 50' site, but you can't fit a 38" trailer into a 25' site. There just aren't enough campsites available right now, so having more to choose from is helpful.

    • @RVMiles
      @RVMiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. I guess the point is that if you're looking at 35' RVs, 25' is probably not going to work for you, so don't fret it too much.

  • @lapowers57
    @lapowers57 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can your rig be to large? Yes it can. I have just discovered that many National park campgrounds use total vehicle length. So if you have a 20 foot trailer and a a 12 foot pickup and reserve a 20 foot site you will not fit and can be turned away. Most state parks I have been to will fit a 20 foot camper and a tow vehicle on a 20 ft site. What has your experience been?

    • @RVMiles
      @RVMiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have never included our tow vehicle or towed vehicle when we were in a motorhome. If the site is close to our length, we'll make sure that we can park next to the RV or sideways, or last resort in auxillary parking. We have never had anyone measure our rig or anything like that. We also find that the vast majority of sites have plenty of room to overhang off the back, so our 38' RV might only take 22' of a site. Of course, often these things need to be checked out in advance.

    I see you fixed those clip-on microphones. Radio check Loud & Clear. On your 5 points: # 2 sleeping numbers are not realistic in the first place for RV's. Indeed, once in a blue moon you might have a guest or 2 or 3, but that's not all the time and possibly never. I had an 11' single axle trailer & we fit 2 kids, mother-in-law, plus mom & dad, all the way to Canada from the Boston area. But after sleeping for 7 or 8 hours, everybody got up, and got outside, because that's where we wanted to be any way. Later I had 2 different 25' trailers, more room yes and they were fine for the time. Time moves on, 40 years in fact, so now am down to a 23', AS, trailer, well designed floor plan (except for the dreaded lack of storage space.) In my mid 70's, I'm thinkin' about maybe trading in, getting a mtrcy & mini trailer. Don't tell me I'm crazy. I don't need anyone to confirm that, since I already know it. Hey, there's lots of bikers with trailers, some even retired, along in years too. And down sizing means I can't tote along that cast iron fry pan & Dutch oven. Gotta' give up something to get out on dispersed sites, BLM lands, off the beaten path., the road less traveled. .... ..no??? What did the olde ball player Yogi Berra once say? "When you come to a fork in the road....................." I know youz guys can fill in that line like falling off a log.

      Generally we don't, though if it's going to be close we make sure there's room for the truck. But usually you can park the truck or toad next to the RV, or sideways, or worst case scenario, in auxiliary parking. But overhanging the RV at the back of the site also helps.

      You gotta love when they offer 3 or 4 packages - and they're all "mandatory." What's the point of a package then!

    WE LOVE WATCHING YOUR TH-cam VIDEOS AND PODCAST, VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION. WE NOTICED YOUR CLAM, WE PURCHASED ONE LAST YEAR AND WE ARE WONDERING WHAT YOU USE TO CLEAN THE OUTSIDE WITH?

    • @RVMiles
      @RVMiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've honestly yet to feel the need to clean the outside, ours has surprisingly stayed pretty clean. But I would probably suggest dish soap and water on a washrag, just like you'd wash most tents. Thanks so much for watching!

    We just finalized the purchase of our travel tailor today. We felt like we were totally overwhelmed by add-ons and things we actually need. Thanks for another great video.

      That is awesome! Congrats! It is absolutely overwhelming. Remember, you can buy anything you really need from a Walmart after you decide you need it.

      You are bringing along someone to make clothes for you while you travel. I had no idea that there were tailors that would travel with you. Can they do other tasks like cook and clean?

    We're in a 32 ft motorhome and after a few months we wished we went 2-4 ft larger. One thing we definitely agree with with, buy for your use, not whether any "guest" is comfortable. That's why they started hotels/ motels......lol

    Jason, we always appreciated your straightforward rv news updates. However the Abby and Jason show and weak attempts to get chuckles by having Abby say goofy stuff is sooo disappointing (and irritating). Sad to say this, but wish you would consider returning to (only) Jason’s friendly news-reporter-like updates which our rv club appreciates and leave the cartoon-like animated attempts to be amusing for some other audience. I know this might come across as nasty, but sometimes the honest truth isn’t pleasant. In any case wish you guys all the best.

      @@hannahshepherd9073 And you could have just ignored my comments. I am sure that “some” do enjoy Abby’s comments. My intent was to be truthful feedback about the many that don’t. Jason and Abby can decide for themselves how to best proceed.

      I’m not going to be someone else just for your RV Club, Joe. I am the same goofy and easy going person in real life as I am in this video, and I have no plans on being someone else. If you don’t like it, I’m fine with that. You use being truthful as an excuse for being nasty, and everyone sees right through it. Thanks for watching, though - and commenting. Both actually help our channel. That said, please don’t watch anymore and please don’t comment again. RV Miles is two people, and I’m not going anywhere.
