Sawyer Squeeze paired with the CNOC VectoX along with the 28mm "cleaning" coupler to attach a Smart Water Bottle (so you don't have to steady aim the filtered water into your bottle on the ground) is definitely gear I'd buy over and over again. In regards to clothing, the Outdoor Research Ferrosi hiking pants have been excellent for many years, enough so that I've bought multiple pairs in different colors (need to mix it up on the trail) as well as the Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat.

I tried those Ferrosi pants once and didn't like them. They were too thin for me, but they were nice.
Another filter to consider is the lifestraw peak series. I recently noticed the lifestraw peak series cartridge uses the exact same threads as my sawyer squeeze but I get a better flow rate out of the lifestraw. It’s .2 micron instead of sawyers .1 micron but for my area I think that’s totally fine.
Two of my items I’d buy again also happen to be two of the most expensive pieces I have, so I’ll count myself lucky.
The zenbivy light bed and my Nemo dragonfly are two items I recommend regularly with zero hesitation.
Nice one! agree with ya on the OV Altitude! They need to add thumbholes but otherwise an amazing hoodie. Some of my additions would be the S2S Ether Lite XT (non-insulated), thermarest pillow, arc haul, and my xboil alcohol stove. So much great gear!
CNOC Vecto bags are awesome, best design I have seen.
Sawyer has been consistently reliable for me. Some of the other filters have not been that great.
I too am headed to the Highline trail this summer - maybe I will see you there. I still haven't selected a specific week but it will likely be the first week of August
Thanks for the nice, well made video. I prefer a little bit different pot+ stove combo because 550 is too small to make my ramen noodles, and Amicus is a little too bulky and heavy for what it does. I am using Toaks 750 + BRS3000T + 1-piece titanium windscreen for the BRS. With this combo, everything nests together with the 4-oz fuel in the pot.
For my dirty water bag plus Filter combo I am using the Nalgene 96-ounce wide mouth canteen to quickly get as much water as I need, and the Katadyne Befree filter with 1L bag. I find this combo light, quick and efficient, and everything is collapsible.
Probably my Trekology trekking poles. They're really good for the price and easy to use.

I love my soto amicus, i also use the soto pot and cooler, the pot is great because the lid is sealable and doesn't fall off, you dont need a bag or rubber band to hold it on. The only problem is no handles. The pot gripper is fine, but it would be next level with handles.
A piece of gear that I would buy all over again is the Ledlenser ML4 lantern. Super small, rechargeable, red light, and built in clip. It is an amazing little light. You are dead on with the Skyline chair. I have the Helinox Chair Zero, but its just low enough you really have to commit to falling into it. The 6" difference in the seat height is a game changer.

Great video. Very interesting seeing what you DIDN’T include. Pack, sleeping system or tent. Glad you have found shoes you like. They are the most important piece of gear as you can’t hike without them.
Thanks! I am in flux right now with packs and trying a few different options. There's so many good options for gear, narrowing down to a best is hard. ha ha. But the items I did share here, really are items I use more than anything else.

Pretty much the same as you with the exception of the chair, I went with the Crazy Creek Hex 2.0. I actually prefer it to a chair as I can also use it inside a tent. it's also incredibly light and wont break easily. It seriously is one of my favourite purchases.
The skyline UL is easily is the most comfortable lightweight chair that rarely ever sinks in the dirt.
For cold weather trips, the Rab Argon down pants are awesome. They have an exceptional warmth to weight, and are comfortable to sleep if needed to supplement bag warmth. Amazing value compared to every other down pant on the market
Big Agnes Skyline UL Chair: I agree. I would like to find something lighter, but it is so much more comfortable to sit in than my Helinox Chair Zero. The height makes a huge difference for me. It is worth the extra weight for me.
The Amok hammock. A bit bulky and heavy for backpacking, but totally worth it! 🤩
This is the best kind of gear video. Best of all time favorites you would buy again. Thanks for sharing! Not sure I'd be willing to add 11oz to upgrade from the Helinox chair to the Big Agnes chair but it does look like a nicer chair if the weight is not a big deal.

Haven't had much luck with any of the squeeze style filters. With even the slightest bit of sediment they're too prone to clogging. You almost need crystal clear water to function properly and even if, it took way too long anyways to filter hindering the amount of time I could spend on the trail. I opted for the MSR Guardian which also filters out viruses which the squeeze styles do not do and it drastically improves filter times extending the amount of time I can spend out on the trail. Talking like, a liter a minute maybe 1 1/2 if you Speedy Gonzales it which humiliates the Sawyer.
I visited my local outdoors store for a repair to my backpack today. As I was leaving there was a person there asking about dry sacks. Apparently they saw one of your videos and mentioned it in the store. Thought that was pretty interesting.

Off topic but…I would like a review or suggestion of a super light hammock that I can take backpacking that just for relaxation, not for sleeping. I have some hammocks but they are a little heavy for a luxury item. Anything out there that’s lightweight and not that serious?
Toaks 650 fits the amicus and fuel.
Fuel regulator stoves are efficient enough to consider the extra weight
I have the Skyline UL chair and I love it, I like it more than the Helinox. I like that it's higher up and it is more comfortable, well worth the extra half pound.

It's crazy that everyone complains about the same things on the sawyer (losing o-rings, crappy pouches, no caps..) and in YEARS they didn't do anything. The platypus quickdraw is just a better design in many ways (and they just made it better with the connect cap), I really hope they manage to improve their QC. Then we'll probably see a sawyer squeeze v2.
I've never lost an o-ring on mine, haven't ever felt the need for caps. Give it a good enough shake to get water out and then no water gets in your gear.
The kicker for me that I didn't discuss in the video is that the Sawyer is an absolute filter, where others aren't.

Sorry, I should have defined that. Absolute means that every hole in the hollow fiber membranes are the same size. In the case of the Sawyer, every single hole is .1 micron. While other filters will have variance in the hole size.
id get another sawyer squeeze. but they are stupid priced up in canada on amazon at least. went with a platypus quickdraw instead and so far am not disappointed. plus i wanted to try something "new" to me.
the soto amicus is awesome, and soto has excellent customer service. Sent me a new one (only had to pay shipping) when my first one failed. second one is rockin solid.
I would never use a Sawyer Squeeze again. I had 2 filters clog on me after I washed it out with tap water and let it dry. The filters were each used only around 5 times max on car trips. After taken out of storage, water never flowed through it again, and back flushing failed too (no water would go through). I never had another filter do that on me whether it's LifeStraw, Katadyn, or MSR. If you have a Sawyer, do not let that filter dry out because it will permanently clog.
I would suggest letting the filter soak in warm vinegar for a good amount of time and then back flush with the vinegar. Tap water still has a bunch of minerals in and those minerals when the filter drys can clog the holes of the filter. That can and will happen with any other hollow fiber filter. Water filters require some maintenance.

Do you possibly know if there is a way to test the Sawyer to see if it froze and broke. Mine might have but not positive
Right on!
If in doubt with the Sawyer/or any hollow fiber filter for that matter, just replace it. Not worth the risk of getting sick.
Also, at one point I asked Sawyer about integrity testing, and the info I got back from them was essentially that integrity tests aren’t a reliable or effective way to truly know if a filter is still good or bad.

lol, you must be old or sore. and that's cool. lots of people would disagree with you, but gear is a personal choice (I carried a chair with me on a 3 day trip and only sat on it once, so I will never bring that "thing" with me ever again).
Yeah, 2-5 day trips, my chair is coming with me for sure. It’s a wonderful luxury item that I am happy to carry and sit on after a long day on trail, it makes the camping part so much more comfortable.
Would I take one on a long distance thru hike? The jury is out.
Hey, Devin! Great video! Very informative. I’m in total agreement with you on the Sawyer Squeeze water filter and CNOC Vecto X. The other thing I absolutely am in total agreement with you on is the Big Agnus Skyline UL chair! I love mine. It’s so comfortable. It also sits several inches higher off the ground than my Helinox Chair Zero. Which makes it much easier to sit down on and get back up from. 👍🏼 I have both OnX Backcountry, and All Trails. I really want to use OnX Backcountry the next time I head out. Do you know if OnX allow sharing of routes?

Yes with OnX you can share folder, routes, waypoints that you create. I believe the person you share with though needs to have an account to view it though.
The best sun hoody I've used has to be the Mountain Hardware Crater Lake. I wanted to like the Altitude hoody from OV, but mine had so many snags after just one outing that I just don't trust it's durability.
I can understand that. Mine is also snaggy from my time of wearing it, but I've been going through gnarly bushes and stuff one some of my trips. I've been impressed with the durability in that it's not ripped open or failed even with being so thin.

I had an issue with my Sawyer Squeeze. Used it last year and back flushed it and let it dry and stored it, but didn't back flush with chlorinated water. Fast forward to my shakedown hike two weeks ago and the filter was totally clogged and only drops would come out no matter how hard I squeezed the pouch. So it's tainted and bought a new one during REI's anniversary sale.
Dang, yeah that can happen as the minerals in the water will dry up and make it hard to push water through. That's where a really good warm vinegar soak and then back flushing with distilled water will make all the difference. That's my typical process after the filters been in storage. If I don't soak it before going on a trip after it's been in storage I'll get just drops. But the soak and a good bit of backlashing brings it back to a happy place.

Dead on about OR Echo Hoodie. Size changed and got sloppy. I sized down and it’s better but still not as precise of fit. Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Sun hoodie is also great. Feels like heaven against the skin. Not quite as breathable as the Exho-nothing is-but very close.
Yeah I was bummed they changed it. The sleeves especially became huge!
@@BackcountryExposure yes. I had to send mine back. XL fit perfect for years until the change. New XL Looked ridiculous on me. Vanity sizing is a really bad trend.

What’s the issue with the versa flow filter? Anyone else have problems with it ?
At the time there wasn’t clear information that the threads were not compatible with smart water bottles, despite being 28mm.
I had a bottle get stuck on the filter and could not get it off. It rendered the filter useless and couldn’t get clean water while on a trip.

It's no longer available, but the Waymark Gear THRU is my all time favorite. Outside of that I've been really loving the REI Flash 55.
The igniter on my Windmaster is flaky so don't use it anymore. I'd pick up an Amicus without the igniter if I'd do it over again.
I'm still using the same OR Echo hoody for colder weather and Astroman hoodie for hotter temps. They haven't worn out at all after a few years. I use a Simms fishing sun hoodie that's fine. I might try the cheaper REI version.
I'm still using the same Cnoc Vecto and Sawyer Squeeze. Still going strong after a few years.
I'm going to give jogger pants a try soon. See if it will replace hiking pants.
Probably the one item I would replace if lost would be my OR Aerogel slippers. They are great camps shoes.
I like the Simms stuff, but it feels pricey! I am also trying jogger pants. ha ha! Not sold yet, but we will see. :)

I've not had any problems the few times I used the piezo igniter on my Soto Windmaster, however, I normally use FireSteel to light my stove - my personal choice for any & all needs for a "spark"
Had my Soto windmaster for probably 6 years. Igniter works perfectly, pretty much first time every time. I reckon you got a dodgy one. Best stove out there IMO.
@@Rickstar270 The igniter on my Soto Windmaster has always worked, no problems. It's my own personal preference to use Firesteel for a spark instead of the stove's igniter.
