    The frequency of the toilets along this hike is definitely appreciated! And yeah, it can be tough picking the ideal time of year. Late September/early October is often good, just gotta make sure they have the water turned on!

    Having made four treks in the GC, I think your eight plus tips for backpacking there are very good.
    To clarify your tip about the availability of potable water and restrooms on the “Corridor Trail”, this applies only to the Bright Angel Trail which extends from the South Rim to the Colorado River. It is one of three arterial trails designated as corridor trails (the best maintained and most traveled -including by mule trains). There is no trail named “The Corridor Trail”. The other corridor trail from the South Rim to the river, the South Kaibab Trail, has NO water sources.

      That’s the kind of value we provide at MyLifeOutdoors. You think you are getting 8 but you really get 13. It’s our version of the bakers dozen.

    One thing that I'd always interject is: "Take Your Time!" Whether you're backpacking in the backcountry or just traveling the Corridor, TAKE YOUR TIME. Pad your itinerary. Slow down. Enjoy.

      I so agree! Going fast increases your risk of injury and you miss out on a fuller experience of nature.

    I'd like to go to Grand Canyon someday but a last-minute permit seems risky when I live almost 1600 miles away. But I guess maybe it can work if we're willing to waitlist it for a few days before the actual start.

    Your video is very helpful. I plan to camp at cottonwood at the end of August. You said skip the tent and sleeping bag.? Should I only take a sleeping pad.? Your advice is appreciated. Thank you!

      At the end of August it will likely be too hot for a sleeping bag. (I would call the park and ask their advice to be safe) but for me I would probably take a blanket or backpacking quilt that I could vent easily if it gets hot. If you have never camped without a tent it can be a little unsettling the first time. The thin material gives you an added sense of security. But will also prevent airflow and hold warm temperatures. There is a small chance it could rain and no shelter at all would be regrettable in that case. Though I believe cottonwood has covered picnic tables? I’m not sure. In the end you have to decide based on your comfort level and experience. If you have some backpacking experience ditching the tent could be rewarding. And not carrying the Weight will be helpful in hot weather. But sometimes the sense of security is worth the weight. Hope this helps

    Thanks for posting. We're going in July as it's the only time of year we can get there from the UK due to school holidays. When you mention the option to not take a tent or sleeping bag, what would then be the ideal set up please?

    • @MyLifeOutdoors
      @MyLifeOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sleeping outside without a tent with some light bedding. This can be a rewarding experience But admittedly this isn’t for everyone. Depending where you camp there are a limited number of open air shelters that would provide shelter from unexpected rain. It is unlikely a tent or sleeping bag is needed in the hot months of summer but it can rain occasionally especially in July/August. I would do some research on “cowboy camping” and see what you think about it.

      @@MyLifeOutdoors Thank you, I read up on Cowboy camping, which appears to mean camping less tent. I've done plenty of that when younger. We're camping at Indian Gardens, I have 2 nights reserved but will probably use 1. So we are not carrying gear to the bottom. I shall be taking a thin blow up mattress (worth every gram!) We'll have tents with us on the Rim and look at the weather to make the rain call. But what's the insect and snake situation in GC?
