This is what i grew up with. My father played professionally with the Grand Ole Opry, but his idol was Johnny Smith. I didn't hear Country-Western in the house growing up, it was Jazz. That's where my father's heart was. Oh, the memories.
Same here Miriam. My mother used to dance around the house listening to swinging music when I was a kid and classical too. I guess that's why I took up the saxophone, listening to the likes of Lester Young and Stan Getz, not to mention listening to 'The Voice of America' with Willis Conover on the radio when I should have been in bed getting some zzz's in for school the next day.

the great Johnny smith, each note so clear, so precise. somehow while listening to this i have visions of Edie Hart visiting Peter Gunn's apartment late at night after the club has closed.
And then, there's Lola Albright impeccably singing Henry Mancini's, "Dreamsville"... "Two Sleepy People"....

Nice to hear the snap, crackle and pop of a real record.. Brings back memories for older cats like me who grew up and learned jazz by buying LP's...
Right on Bro. we burned up two Magnavox units listening to LPs like this. Remember we used to be able to select 16 rpm and slow it down and octave lower, but hear what those cats were doing.... still very scary in most cases.

@@sitarnut Nice thing about those old recordings (and this is especially true of the 10" and 12" 78's) is that you CAN slow the record down to analyze what the artist is doing, without it all sounding like a God awful mess.
When they started adding "effects" in the 1960's, that clarity at slower speeds went away.
I could play this forever! simple yet very sophisticated. Thank you.

Johnny Smith inspired guitar greats like Louie Shelton who was part of the LA Wrecking Crew. Louie took this influence in to the studio recording of tunes for artists such as Boz Scaggs , The Monkees, Marvin Gaye, Barbara Streisand and a stack-load of others

The first one sounds like "almost blue".
What's with the cover photo? He looks like he's listening to a playback and thinking, "omigod, that sounds absolutely awful!". Not a picture I would have chosen, for sure.
Not to worry. You can't play like him either!

Marklin & Johnson: I am actually an accomplished jazz saxophonist teaching myself jazz guitar, and Johnny Smith is one of my guitar idols. I didn’t say anything to disparage his music, and never said I could (or could not) play like him (not that you would know either way. Can YOU play like him?). I simply commented on what I consider an odd choice for an album cover photo. I have the right to do that, unless I’m mistaken and I’m in Nazi Germany by chance? Your nasty reply makes you appear an immature fool.
Stay stick to the music, the universe of the illustration and cover design is not your thing. "In a sentimental mood", my dear.

For what I understand, Johnny Smith is playing melody and harmony at the same time. I could be mistaken tho.
No. There’s a separate guitar comping in the background on the tracks without piano. It must be a separate track of Smith as no other guitar player is listed. It’s somewhat unusual for a 50’s jazz album
The two guitar arrangement on How About You is especially intricate. Really brilliant piece of work there
What guitar did he play on this album?
1954 he was probably playing a D'Angelico. The greatest guitar maker that ever lived. Mr. D'A had an apprentice named Jimmy D'Aquisto who may have equalled or surpassed him after Mr. D'A passed in 1964. he was a small 1-2 man operation in New York City.
@@bunkerman99 Yes, it sounds like Kenny Burrell, who was a D'Angelico-user also. Amazing sound. Beautiful abum. I'm not really a fan of jazz guitar, but I love it.
@@Solyom_Sam Lotsa guys went to D'A. They had to switch when they went under contract bc D'A was one man and he did not sponsor anyone; he did not have to, his guitars were the Strads in the guitar world. Chet Atkins played one before getting an endorsement. Irving Ashby. Pizzarelli, George Benson and many dozens of Professional players. Even Mel Bay of the lesson books always had 1 or 2. Gibson Super 400 sold for $400 but wholesale to a store was $200. The D'A New Yorker was $400 and it all went to D'A.
