Trent could tell us he was gonna make an album by banging on a trashcan with a rake while swinging 2 cats around in a burlap sack, and there's no doubt it would be a phenomenal album.
Everything in this song just sounds so pristine clear, the plucking of the instruments, the clanky acoustics, the gentleness in the singers voice... Trent really was inspired by the Ghosts album to make this band I can tell.
Beautiful. It is almost unbelievable to see the kind of things Trent Reznor is able to create, he is without any doubt one of the best contemporary musicians. Of course, Atticus Ross is great too and Mariqueen is the perfect voice that complete them.
Rob's visual work with everything NIN related since 99 has been a major influence for me to go to university for film. I love his style of analogue mixed with glitch art.
I think this is among the top handful of most beautiful, yet sorrowful songs I've ever heard. Talk about the ocean... I think I just cried an ocean, as I was so moved by this song. Wonderful job, Mariqueen. Wonderful. Really hearing her voice fully on this one and loving it. I hope Mariqueen and Reznor keep on working together to make more amazing pieces like this one.
This song is awesome! Has a Fleetwood Mac Rumors feel to it. Glad he is still interested in making music. It makes my world a little better while he is still putting stuff out there.
Its so surreal to me still because I had a friend named Marqi who looked EXACTLY like Mariqueen, loved NIN and Trent, but she killed herself about 18 years ago. I remember when I first saw a photo of Mariqueen, I thought it was Marqi and I had to question reality for a bit. I hope Marqi can hear this beautiful music wherever she has moved onto. I miss that beautiful, sweet girl. 🖤
Sad, I also have lost several friends. From suicide and opiates who were all big NIN fans. God Bless your dear friend Marqi, and may she and my friends live on through this beautiful song ..R.I.P. forermore, Namaste ...;€
So sad to lose some friends, notably in these circumstances. Same for me… Recently discovered HDA, and NIN’s music was among my best cultural/cathartic ways to care myself. Love and strength to you. Love to Marqi.
I remember riding riding on an old mountain road with my brother with rain hitting the window while this song played it felt almost like life was perfect just for a moment

I find it looks the same, but everything has changed I find remembering gets harder every day Sometimes I still believe who I pretend to be Sometimes, well everything's exactly how it seems I see the color of your eyes turn to gray I feel the wind is growing colder every day Sometimes I open up the walls and disappear Sometimes the crashing of the waves is all I hear Ocean, help me find a way Ocean, wash us all away I know that everything we did will come around I take the thought of you and burn it to the ground Sometimes I'm waiting for this ice age to arrive Sometimes the hate in me is keeping me alive Ocean, help me find a way Ocean, wash us all away Ocean, help me find a way Ocean, carry us away
The music Trent is putting out with HTDA makes me smile. It's not that it's particularly upbeat or anything, but I feel like you can tell enjoys making it more. I'll always love the music he made while he was going through the hardest of his times, but there's something to be said for a man who makes amazing music after they've passed through those times and has found what's special to them, Thank you Trent.
This is definitely my favorite HTDA track thus far. It's a stronger departure from the signature NIN sound, has good lyrics, and it shows off Mariqueen's vocals. It also sounds suspiciously like bluegrass to me, which is one of my all time favorite genres. I'd like to hear more like this track.
I love how you can hear a bit of Trent in everything he is involved in, even though he probably tries to not have it be that way. I think he strives to do new stuff that isn't the same, and its the different-ness with the touch of familiarity that I love to hear. She has an amazing tone too.
As Trent is the only official member of NIN, he is NIN, or NIN is part of Trent, but even though NIN's music ranges from one end of spectrum to another, we can still hear him experiment with something new and that is wonderful. How many artists can go from "Pretty hate machine" downward the spiral, hold on to sanity with_teeth, finish with Year Zero, and then move on to make something like this. I can name you one, Steven Wilson. These two guys are fucking geniuses, outstanding and unmatched

Mr. Rezor is an artist and is diverse. It's not all NIN. I love this group/project. She has an amazing voice. The production and mixing are amazing. You can feel Trent in the music and the video. It's haunting and beautiful.
I didn't like this song the first time I heard it...the second time I heard it I wanted to see the video again...then it happened I got hooked--I have now watched this video over 50 times during the last few days and I cant stop...so spooky.
Dude right!! I just discovered her like couple of days ago and I just purchased Welcome Oblivion on vinyl with bonus cd Uk import from the UK. Gosh the albums are expensive but it’s worth every penny. I have all NIN on LP with other limited edition vinyls and I for the life of me have no clue how this band got passed me??? It’s phenomenal!!!
In the June 3rd 2009 Mansfield NIN show (watch?v=rIsAazPVnFQ) Trent speaks briefly saying that he locked himself in a house on the ocean saying he was going to write new music but actually had the intent of committing suicide. He didn't obviously, but he did write La Mer. So yeah I absolutely agree, even if this isn't the house itself, this song and its set represents that house and that feeling.
Good senses. Back in 1998 - 1999 Reznor was talking about starting a female side project where he could finally go back to hiding behind his synthesizer instead of being the main attraction. He apparently earmarked Aaliyah as a potential candidate but between making the fragile, his addiction problems and her demise, the idea was shelved for another 10 or so years.
Love this song. It stands on it's own outside the shadow of NIN. Mariqueen's voice is beautiful and fleshes out the song nicely.I like the stillness of the video.
Great song. I love the directions Trent has taken us this past decade. Mariqueen's voice is perfect here as well. Thankfully Trent's a good enough producer/writer to not overshadow her performances but to enhance them with his trademark feel. That being said ... I want a new NIN album sometime too!
This song is comforting but also so uneasy. Like walking on a familiar beach only to look down and find small critters burrowing into the sand under your feet. They won’t hurt you but once you know they’re there you can never fully relax again.
It's amazing how sometimes you can get tired from nearly all the music in the world and the one day discover something beautiful like this! A whole cd is a f**king orgasm to the ears!
HOLY SACRED UNIVERSE! At 3:00 synth freaks will recognize it!!! THANK YOU TRENT, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Take care of it as much as you would for your wife! =8D
One thing I've always respected about TR is that he isn't afraid to experiment a little and step outside of his comfort zone. I for one am glad that HTDA provides an outlet for him to do so. I see now why he stopped reading forums/Twitter/etc, because if it doesn't sound exactly like Downward Spiral, the masses lose their collective shit.
It was past two in the morning and I was in a self-loathing trance - hypnotized by that bleak and endless stretch of frozen highway. When I heard the first notes of this tune, I eased up on the gas... and then the lyrics glued themselves to my brain and I realized - this song was written for me. Now how the f**k, did anyone else know how I felt? 🤔
I was NOT thrilled about Trent starting a new "band" without him singing BUT I actually LOVE this!!! It definitely has him in the music and her voice is beautiful! I still LOVE Nine Inch Nails and Trent but I am definitely a fan of How To Destroy Angels now too!
I absolutely love it. It is refreshing and clean. Fantastic. So many cool instruments, if that is really a Fairlight in that room I am already drooling. Let alone what I can only assume is a Chinese instrument that Trent learned how to play. Those of you that want NIN, go listen to your albums already!
I don't understand why so many comments on HTDA songs complain about her voice or why Trent doesn't sing. I think she has a beautiful voice and it works great with these dark and delightfully eerie rhythms and beats. This is NOT NIN, it's Trent's side project and if you can't respect the artistic creativity that goes into anything Trent works on then that's a damn shame for you. No one is telling you to like this or not. The industry needs more artist who create music they love.
Ride on man. I know a lot of people don't like this record, but when The Downward Spiral came out hardly anyone cared for it either. It was a while before people started catching on. I also love how this music is so original and different. There's not a record out that sounds like this. Thanks, and take care!
It's a PPG Realizer. One of the rarest synthesizers in the world. Only two were made in the 80's, and I heard Trent may possibly have the only functioning unit. Some crazy software synth developer really needs to talk Wolfgang Palm into providing details and source code to enable replication of a modern virtual version of it.
Trent is amazing, i like pretty much all of his work, in any way, shape or form. The nice vocals in this song also make for a very soft melodic song :)
Trent still knows how to hit his fans on the deepest emotional level, anyone can relate to any of his tracks and style of music. The man is music genius hands down.
Listening to deadmau5's remix of this song you can understand what a huge producer he is. Not talking about the absurd sound engineering, Zimmerman simply added something special to the track making it unique. Great song. Perfect remix. Deadmau5 is hands down the best electronic music producer of 21st century.
No accounting for taste, huh.I'm sure it's possible to like Taylor Swift AND HTDA.I must admit though,if all I had was a radio I'd want to 'open up the walls and disappear' and cease to exist!
How did I not know this existed till just now wow how good the music is right on her voice makes it so good whatever that instrument is he’s playing is awesome I love that bass like sound it almost sounds out of tune I love it
I personally love both Trent and deadmau5, deadmau5 in my opinion is one the few electronic music producers that actually put an artistic meaning to what their music is and represent and it is not just a bunch of random sounds... both the original and the remix version of this song are great but I see some of you hating the fact that deadmau5 touched this, believe me it is 10000 times better that it was touched by deadmau5 and not just a ramdom producer out there... Joel actually is a big fan of Nine Inch Nails
Awww, and here I thought I'd never hear a prepared piano outside of neo classical music! Gives the whole piece a rainy, wondering quality. Love it! And people: if you wanna hear the NIN-trent, why don't you just look for those songs on youtube, instead of wasting time, space and breath on something you clearly dislike? Doesn't make sense.
when I watch this video I can't stop thinking that it was inspired by Reznor's time spent in some cottage by the sea while writing The Fragile (so I've heard)
Sleazy gave his blessing to Trent to use “How to Destroy Angels”. Sleazy passed into the ether of the night before he could work on the music Trent sent him on an iPad.
I'm glad people are happy to hear Trent on the production. But PLEASE give Mariqueen her flowers as well. those gorgeous, haunting, ethereal vocals totally made the project for me. all the people talking about how she looks and saying things about her that are completely unrelated to the project are grossing me out. please stop that
Possibly the most beautifully eerie song ever written.

I am sorry but every time my tears hurt and my eyes bleed red. Thank you Trent ...always good things with you ............you never hurt ok
I want to turn this on about 30 seconds before a giant meteor destroys us all 😊🎉
Loving the new material...always the case with these guys.
Wow, that imagery is so disturbing. It literally turns into a nightmare
+nathanel1313 the only song he finished was la mer.... he was in a drug fueled suicidal depression
Thank you Deadmau5. Definitely will be checking out more of this artist now
Sleazy gave his blessing to Trent to use “How to Destroy Angels”. Sleazy passed into the ether of the night before he could work on the music Trent sent him on an iPad.
I find that this is one of those songs that requires you to really sit through it, to be patient, in order to really appreciate it.
I'm glad people are happy to hear Trent on the production. But PLEASE give Mariqueen her flowers as well. those gorgeous, haunting, ethereal vocals totally made the project for me. all the people talking about how she looks and saying things about her that are completely unrelated to the project are grossing me out. please stop that
Yes. Mari queen is amazing; her voice is like a silk scarf, warm yet cool as water.
Even the instruments sound cold in this song. P. S. That was some cool and slightly disturbing visuals in this video.
My regards to the ocean. Love.
