I have seen many demonstrations of the split primary palette using two of each primary but I have to say that this is the most elegant solution to the problem of being able to mix the widest range of colors from the fewest primary colors that I have seen. I've always been a fan of using the complimentary colors for greying because of the wonderful color harmony it gives that you just can't get when using black.
Thanks for your comment, Newlinjim! Glad you liked the video! Yes, a limited palette is a wonderful way to learn more about colour harmony before you broaden your palette with more colours. Best wishes!
This was the best explanation of how to mix colors and color theory I’ve watched! Thank you for your very informative lesson and the pdf on the different paint color names from different vendors that are similar. I truly appreciate your help and your excellent teaching style.
Thank you!! I've tried a few other videos, and all they did was confuse me more- they were mixing each color of paint they had together with another color and making a chart so the colors could be referenced later.... but this has actually taught me something new! I'm so excited I finally get it lol
Thanks for your feedback, Meghan! So glad my video helped you to understand Color mixing better. Color charts can help you to experiment some Color combinations and can be useful but understanding what each color does in the mixing will free you up to create your colors as you need them! Also starting with a limited palette will give you more freedom and assertive mixing before adding fancy tube colors! Enjoy the process!
Finally.... I have been looking for a tutorial that explains it as you did...... Thanks alot I have been having problems mixing my colors ...u have really helped me
I just have to say that this video was so impactful for me and really really helped cement the knowledge. I've got no formal art training and was struggling with color mixing despite painting freeform for a while. Thank you so much for uploading!
LezLuna I’m glad to hear that my video has helped you with your color mixing journey! Thanks for your comment and for sharing a bit of your story with us! Best wishes and happy painting!
Dear Livia, Thanks for this great video! very helpful for me as I'm just starting painting. I wonder if this colours will also work if I paint with acrylics. I I am not sure about the red, because I have looked for primary magenta (other brands) also crimson red but they are so different that I don't know which I should go for? Appreciate if you could help me with this. Blessings
Hi Paula, it applies for acrylics as well, however some colours in acrylic might have different names, depending on what brand you use. To avoid all the colour name trouble, I'd suggest you to have a look at Winsor & Newton Acrylic Artists Colours. They use the CMY colour system to name their colours, and their primary magenta and cyan blue are beautiful and true to the CMY colour wheel. To understand more about colour systems, check my video: Primary Colours - a Guide to Understanding What Colours Can Be Used as the Primary Colours th-cam.com/video/qasSSaX7q_w/w-d-xo.html
you could substitute the ptalo blue with viridian. add ultramarine violet and cadmium orange and replace the yellow with cad yellow light. you would have single pigment primary and secondary and adjust them to make tertiary. 6 instead of 5 and have an even easier time making tertiary colors with the whole spectrum.
@@LiviaDiasStudio I really enjoyed your video although my English knowledge is not good. I'm sorry if you can help me get a shabby chic color palette. I'm a full amateur but I love this palette of colors for my small hobby projects 🤗Thanks a lot!
Iva Lat sorry, I got sidetracked and ended up forgetting to reply your question. You can mix pastel colours by adding a speck of the complementary colour to your main colour and adding white as well. For example: if I want a soft greyish orange, I mix yellow and red to make orange first. Then, I add a touch of ultramarine blue and then some white. That will give me a soft pastel orange. Remember to add very little of the complementary colour, otherwise your colour will go very grey (unless that is what you want! ) I hope to make a video soon for my TH-cam channel teaching that. Let me know how it goes! Happy painting!
@@LiviaDiasStudio Thank you for your help. I will try it. I used it with basic colors, white with a little ocher color. But I always miss something. This softness of pastel colors. I hope you will soon record a video on this subject. Thanks in advance.
Hi Livia, thank you for a clear and practical walk through on colour mixing essentials. Just what I was looking for to launch my oil painting pass time. Thank you.
Hello! Very nice, congratulations! Please use the correct primary (physical) colors. Magenta, Cyan and Yellow (chrom). This is more correct for beginners! Tks!
im watching this video from my work computer and i sign into my account just so i could write this comment and thank you! im just getting started in acrylic painting and was a bit disappointed because my local book store did not have a big range of color but with this trick i can definitely mix and match to make the shade of color that i want! so thank you!
Thanks for your comment, Adia. Thanks for sharing your story with us. I always get amazed with the amount of colours we can mix up out of a handful of basic pigments! Enjoy your colour mixing journey! Happy painting!
Reza Hosseinzadeh Nasser yes, you can use another red and yellow and apply the theory. However you will obtain different outcomes. For example, if you try to mix purple out of the cadmium red and blue combination, you will get a more brownish purple instead of a vibrant clean purple.
I'm working with acrylics, but I know the same theory applies. I just wonder how you remember everything! Is it practice? I think if I was trying to get to a specific color it might take some trial and error to figure it out.
Hi Anne, thanks for your comment! I think it's a combination of practice and knowing how each colour behaves. Also understanding colour theory and colour lingo helps a lot. Trial and error are fine, it's a good way for our brain to learn from errors and how to get to the right track!
Very fine demonstration of color mixing and interesting to see your choice of basic color. The only thing I wondered was how you can make a very bright lemon yellow ? Thank you again for your very inspiring videos
Lis Engel , Given the fact that she has limited herself with this chosen palette, the best that you could hope for would be a slightly duller version of the yellow she has chosen by adding a very tiny amount of the Phthalo Blue GS. Of course you can desaturate it more by adding white to increase the value. Other than that you need to purchase it in the tube.
Nadia Louderback I mix my value colours prior to painting. Just the core values. Then when painting I normally mix a few extra colours with my brush as I go, usually variations of the core values.
Lis Engel I like Maimeri Puro for primary colours. Another brand I like is Daler Rowney Artists' Oil ( professional range). These two brands professional quality paints are great. I wouldn't go for their student cheaper paints though they are too oily and lack in pigment strength
