For $30 with a receiver now, it's perfect for a beginner, with only one or two quads. If you have a shed full of quads, then sure, use a taranis, but the turingy evolution is a good starter. Not sure why you could even compare it to the taranis, i mean, there's a $200 difference
Agreed, but as someone new to the hobby who bought one I still don't regret it as its probably the best controller out there for simulators and it was only $60AUS delivered from hobby king just before xmas. Thats still cheaper than a genuine PS4 controller, so for kicking around the house I cant complain
I just started in racing quads... TBO, this is the first serious RC thing I have ever owned... So I know SFA about most of this stuff... I watched your review and a heap of others (UAVfutures range tested his EVO vs his X9 Taranis) before purchasing my EVO and I got it over the QX7... Form factor, internal battery, touch screen, protection, price and freight (I had it inside a week vs 6 weeks for the QX7) was what did it for me... At this stage I don't need the range and super small receivers... I have a 12yo son who is enjoying the hobby as well and the EVO is far more ergonomic for his smaller hands and with the size/form factor of the QX7 it would have been pretty difficult for him to learn and far less enjoyable... You are spot on with saying Turnigy has dropped the ball since though and it's only a matter of time before I buy a QX7 and new gimbals and new goggles and build better quads and buy a lot more batteries... Upgrading is part of any hobby/sport... I don't feel your advice (or Stew's) was misleading or incorrect... We are having a blast thanks to the little EVO... This is a case of horses for courses... You need a better control, better range and smaller RX because you have evolved in your flying since your review.... Keep up the great videos...
Four words... W.T.F. Flysky?! The receiver thing is BS (but that's not the only issue here, keep reading). Just look at the FS-A8S thread on RCGroups for an example. But lets take a look at an apples to apples comparison of the full size Taranis controllers vs the TGY-i10 (or FS-i10) and it's even sadder. The i10 controllers have great innovations like its' light weight, thin profile, color touch screen, an included swappable lipo battery, micro SD card storage, plug and play USB function for PC sims, and even all the telemetry stuff it comes with (for larger craft) ...all at a price of only $99 from HK for the TGY-i10 and it is an amazing and insane product/bargan. But what is even more amazing and insane is that they didn't support it or push it's advantages to the fore in the public's eye, and that they have kept it closed source instead of setting it free to the OpenTX community. On the other hand, FrSky hasn't innovated in the right direction with their controller ergonomics and features where they could (should) have taken inspiration from BOTH the i10 AND Evolution for a new TX model by now. Who's in charge at these companies!?! I want your job!
have you tried the TBS Tango? love to hear your thoughts. I have small hands and am a thumber so the evolution is awesome with the x6b, but Im starting to flystuff that has no grey area and I need something to tell me to turn the F back when im fixin to be out of range. So basically I need a grown up Evolution with RSSi and a crossfire micro and the world will be round again
It's such a huge missed opportunity for Turnigy. All they had to do was put out at least one solid compact receiver and I'd be all in. I'm going to switch to FrSky when I save up.
I did the same journey from evolution to qx7. However I still feel for someone new to the hobby with a million things to learn, the evolution or the flysky i6 etc are better options than the Taranis. Most 5 inch quads have no trouble with the flysky X6B receiver which is full range with shorter antenna than the turnigy one. I switched when I started building superlights and needed the xm+. However for a beginner there's a lot of faff to set it up! the qx7 gimbals are awful without adjustment (god damn notch throttle) on the newer ones, and and the qx7 feels like toytown plastic junk.
(subbed). Weird timing. I purchased about the time of your initial review...and the last few weeks I've had all the same thoughts as this video. Maybe time for me to switch too. Turnigy, what are going doing?
Flying the evo since day one and still love it. But you are right the taranis brings more safety. When crossfire micro runs flawless i think i will upgrade as well and get all the fullrange/longrange thing going. But for my flying till today the evo is pretty fine
I wouldn't want it as my only transmitter, but I want it as something for a couple micros to throw in my backpack and ride to the park on my bike with. There's a charm to its form factor.
I totally feel you on the range with the A8S. I was camping the other weekend and since there's no rssi telemetry, I was terrified to fly too far. I wanted so bad to just fly down the river and up the face of the mountain, but I'm only confident to go, like you said about 100 yards away from myself. The TGY ia6c on the other hand is full range with diversity and full telemetry and it works with the Evolution. It's about the size of an XSR if you de-pin it, id suggest giving it a try before you give up on the Evo. Still though, the signal will just never be quite as rock solid as the FrSky link
(Subbed) because you are one of the few people I have heard give an honest opinion on the EVO. I tried the EVO and waited to see if Hobby King would really move the product forward. But alas I knew it was to good to be true. The Evo was designed for those comfortable with Xbox & PlayStation controllers the ergonomics are pretty spot on. Since I don't spend hours upon hours flying like one would at gaming, the EVO's ergonomics aren't enough of a reason for me to abandon the comfort and the options of a Taranis, QX7 or Horus for that matter. With XM+, XSR-M, XSR, and R-XSR Receivers the options are plentiful and just awesome. Even Furious now has a 1.5k Diversity Frsky receiver! Options Options Options.
I'm really new in this hobby so one question : what's the way to increase your range? Also, I bought a transmitter for like 10 bucks, an eaychine TX526 I think. I was thinking about buying the GX7 but do I have to get something with it to upgrade the range?
honestly how long was it before the evolution came out? they havent released a transmitter since the 9xr...makes sense they havent developed anything since its release.
Justin Skinner ahh ok not aaaas long as I thought lol but ehh. For me the small game console style controller actually messes with my brain and I have to retain the NOT a video game so as not to smash my $500 builds lol
How do I use the B-Det cable? can I connect it with a Li-Po 14.8 V package? then the transmitter will show on the LCD display the packet voltage (RX telemetry)?
Well thats his opinion and its fine, i think at the end its all about factory support and extras, you can do pretty much whatever you want with the taranis and the evolution is very basic and thats fine for racing. This products all are made in china just re-branded so i dont think flysky is going to disappear, for people that have flysky it can get very expensive to switch. At the end it all comes down to preference and money IMO.
Their smallest smallest receiver is the only one that fits in my drones. But it’s only a park rx with limited range. There are plenty if bigger ones but I need small.
Friend i dont think your quite understand the evolution is just a flysky transmitter in a nice case. What this means is pretty much any new flysky receiver works with this transmitter. I recommend the Flysky X6B which is like $10 on banggood.
I'm in the EVO stuff, and started to think the same in the past months... the problem I have that much quads changing to FrSky makes me feel the pain :D
Would you still recommend it as a first or beginner transmitter? As I'm just getting into fpv. If your not going to be using yours I would be happy to take it off your hands. Lol
+Brian Ashbeck lol sold it already. It’s a fine controller everything from my first review still stands true, and if nothing in this video dissuaded you grab it!
Justin Skinner Could I get your opinion on what would be a good beginner fpv quad? Should I start with a micro or something bigger?thanks bro and I love your channel!

I'm just getting into this. Is tweaking a controller that hard to do? Forgive my ignorance, I have no clue how to go about it yet, I just assumed we could customize controllers to a degree as well and am willing to study up. What's to stop someone from frankensteining the good from bulky controllers into the smaller frame of an evo. Like sacrificing the space used on LED lighting etc. If this is vastly more complicated than I make it out to be, someone let me down easy. I ordered the evo not too long ago because of its design... it's cheaper compared to the competition and standalone in design... why aren't there more controllers shaped like that... I come from the gaming world so the boxy clunky standard shapes look very unappealing ergonomically.
Makes good sense and totally agree with ya, I bought my xd9 right before they dropped the qx7 and the Special edition xd9 go figure. I’ve used the evolution for over a year and can’t fault it, I use it with the Ia6c rx and get great range! I’ve never had it failsafe and have taken it far out over the sea, through solid buildings etc and never once had an issue. When me and my friends go flying the only ones that ever have failsafes are the ones with a taranis. I have total faith in my evolution - I tried a taranis and sold it after a week
I fly the evolution everywhere in bandos and in hard rf condition and it no worse then my frsky. If you want to fly long distance then why are you doing it with crafts that don't have the space for a full range receiver?
There are loads of receivers and micro ones with telemetry ! The x6b is one I often use but have quite a few others. I use a fsia6 transmitter but think people are getting confused thinking the evolution is turnigy when in fact its a cut down flysky fsia6 so will work with all the afhdss2 flysky receivers. I am tempted to buy one for the ergonomics the 5 model memory only is a problem for me though as am used to my twenty model fsia6 already upto 12 used :(
I know this is an older video, but I don't think they ever planned on "keeping up" on much, or release anything new? Turnigy doesn't make the the FCs , that's flysky. I think they marketed it for either beginners getting their feet wet with a simple radio with limited switches and recognizable form factor, or for people wanting a back up / smaller radio for certain situations. I use Taranis for my bigger regular quads, slowly switching to DJI air, and then with the Evo being so cheap, I bought last year, and us it solely on my toothpicks and whoops,
I've used Turnigy Evolution for almost a year. Yesterday, while mid-flight, the right stick (roll/pitch) suddenly would not go past halfway. This happened to a buddy of mine about 2 months ago. His drone crashed hard and did not survive the impact. Mine crashed but was not deadly. The transmitter is DOA. This is unfortunate, because it is absolutely the perfect size - similar to XBOX controller. Goodbye Evolution :(
Too bad that FRsky can't make a gamepad type of controller. I like my QX7 but they could do a flip screen or offload the screen to a cell phone either via wifi or bluetooth. I don't really even use the screen that much. If they offloaded the screen they could shrink it down and I always have my cell phone with me anyway. Don't need more than two switches anyway and they have to KNOW by now that us Quad pilots are their biggest users..
i trow out that stupid controller evo and whent for a TBS Tango with Crossfire, never regretted it. No More failsafes or be scared of failsafes. Now i can trust my RC link to the max. I agree completly with your video
The evolution has its place. I started with taranis in Jan2017 and switched to the evolution for the form factor and basic simplicity alone. It does what I need and I'm happy with it with exception that it has only 5 model memory... tsk tsk but then I got two of em... one for my mini quads for big field days and one for my micros at the micro park just outside my front door. A newer upgraded version of the evolution would be great!
It seems like most peoples problems are from the crap a8s ''mini'' receiver.. That's the worst receiver possible for the evo and unless you are flying something like a 3in you should have plenty of room for something like the x6b (best rx for evo) or the ia6c that both have full range and no issues.
You're killing me man. I have had pretty much every tx put there except the super expensive stuff like the jetis. I absolutely love the evolution form factor and touch screen. But didn't realize how much the giant receivers bother me especially when I'm trying to build a light weight 4 inch racer. I may be switching back to a qx7 for the second time with M7 Gimbals this time.
I put my order in for my evolution today. 15 minutes later I just found your video :( Actually, I'm dying to get started with FPV and drones, (I dabble in surface RC) and I could not wait for the release of FrSky X-lite since I think that is the going to be the best controller for me...so...this still sounds like it's a good controller for me especially since I know I'll be buying another one once I start being able to do more than hover! Subscribed, can't wait to check out more of your videos.
I wish I known about the evolution before I bought it. It's good not great definitely doesn't have the range you want. It's good for back yard flying but nothing more. Get a taranis don't waste your cash.
I'm on the other end of the spectrum as far as the size of the controller goes. I felt that the Turnigy looked and felt kinda cheap almost like a video game controller (jmo) I bought the Taranis and would not go back , the receivers are as small as you can get in the industry! plus full range (No Brainer for me )
i first time i see u vids i was intersting in finding smaller recivers and i think all u say is correckt i bougt the tunergy evalution the time i startede and was going for the ergonomics and a controller i was able to grow with but new i need smaller recivers better range i also hope for frsky to make better ergonomics and smaller controllers only for the mini quad foks with no servo ajustmens and other shit we dont need with a cortex chip inside
freaking crappy ginormous receivers, killed the thumbers dream!.💔.. it quickly became a nightmare,,, then you start wrapping your "micro receivers" in tin foil. 👌😂
I dont understand why they keep on releasing those square shaped monsters. The design of the evolution is close to perfect.
but looking at the "turnigy" evolution it looks the same size as a normal tx.
For $30 with a receiver now, it's perfect for a beginner, with only one or two quads. If you have a shed full of quads, then sure, use a taranis, but the turingy evolution is a good starter. Not sure why you could even compare it to the taranis, i mean, there's a $200 difference

Yeah, I hope it was not just a bunch of talk haha!
i trow out that stupid controller evo and whent for a TBS Tango with Crossfire, never regretted it.
Yea I like the form factor of the turnigy but that's it. I still fly my x9d and qx7 and don't see changing anytime soon.
It seems like most peoples problems are from the crap a8s ''mini'' receiver.. That's the worst receiver possible for the evo and unless you are flying something like a 3in you should have plenty of room for something like the x6b (best rx for evo) or the ia6c that both have full range and no issues.
I love my TBS Tango...........
Im a n00b but have big hands and the Tango has so many options
If you have never heald one give it a try
You're killing me man. I have had pretty much every tx put there except the super expensive stuff like the jetis. I absolutely love the evolution form factor and touch screen. But didn't realize how much the giant receivers bother me especially when I'm trying to build a light weight 4 inch racer. I may be switching back to a qx7 for the second time with M7 Gimbals this time.
has anyone done a antenna mod for some better range. lol its a flysky fs i6s in a game controller
Turnigy can bind to flysky modules
Evo is still best bang for the buck.. crossfire doesn't interest me, Im not walking a mile away when I crash.
combustion8 lol I feel ya there, I avoid doing stupid shit far away right now.
you can do that with a standard taranis
I really like my Taranis Q X7. Good video!
This is why I use both an EVO and my TH9X
are they catepillars on your face?
arn't you concerned that those forehead lines are gonna set?
I'm on the other end of the spectrum as far as the size of the controller goes. I felt that the Turnigy looked and felt kinda cheap almost like a video game controller (jmo) I bought the Taranis and would not go back , the receivers are as small as you can get in the industry! plus full range (No Brainer for me )
+Mark Thompson video game controllers are made to fit your hand. That was the big appeal for me.
i first time i see u vids i was intersting in finding smaller recivers and i think all u say is correckt i bougt the tunergy evalution the time i startede and was going for the ergonomics and a controller i was able to grow with but new i need smaller recivers better range i also hope for frsky to make better ergonomics and smaller controllers only for the mini quad foks with no servo ajustmens and other shit we dont need with a cortex chip inside
They need an Evolution with a JR module bay
Maybe they feel they got it right the first time for what they wanted to do. If it ain't broke...
You like to wave your transmitter a lot
It’s starting to rain and that’s cool. 😂
get a ia6c THAT IT COMES WITH and it goes stupid far
freaking crappy ginormous receivers, killed the thumbers dream!.💔.. it quickly became a nightmare,,, then you start wrapping your "micro receivers" in tin foil. 👌😂
Spektrum guy here!!! Hahahhaaaa
+DjGekj lol maybe one day I'll try spectrum...
They didnt bring nothing new.
Notification squad!!!!!
Because it's a piece of shit for serious flyers!
+William Decker lol
Subbed. I ditched my Evolution as well.. Check out my vids and insta - UFO FPV, Cheers !
