This band is love of my life. I also adore their guitarist and sound engineer, Mr. Kubota. He’s a great person to talk to and this year I’m finishing an album made of sounds that he recorded.

The bassist was already in a band and wasnt sure he'd join LRD. Mizutani pulled up to the cafe in a van, opened the door and demanded he get in. Longtime fan of this band. Glad they’re getting more recognition thanks to videos like this! According my late friend and bandmate Yuzo Iwata, who shared a rehearsal space with Mizutani in the 80’s as a member of Maher Shalal Hash Baz, the actual reason why they never released any proper studio albums was simply that Mizutani was somewhat insecure about the sound of his voice. He hated the way his vocals sounded on higher fidelity recordings. Hence, the bootlegs. Another interesting detail he shared is that a lot of the younger art rockers in Japan at the time regarded them as kind of corny, because they associated them with the 60’s. Most of the younger people in the scene dismissed them along the typical “punks vs hippies” lines.

For those that don't know them already, you should definitely check out Flower Travellin' Band as well (a clip of their Satori II video is used at 9:53). As best as I understand it, they were another band who played a large part in introducing noise-rock, heavy metal, and psychedelic rock sounds to Japan. Granted their music is quite different from this band's - and probably a lot more 'accessible', as they were heavily influenced by the classic rock sounds of the US in the late 60s/early 70s - but they were also a part of the counterculture movement. A good place to start would be their Anywhere album, where they covered classics like 21st Century Schizoid Man, House of the Rising Sun, etc... And their rendition of Louisiana Blues is out of this world.

88kasyo junrei is another great modern torch bearer
If you ever decide to open up that Patreon for real, I'd gladly support you on there. Your vids have brough so much into my life - great conversations with my friends, interesting insight into different cultures and most importantly some fine music reccomendations.
Pfp... Do better
I met this band 5 years ago, such a relief they are not forgotten; they are so talented…
today it was announced that mizutani had died in 2019, according to the official website for the rallizes, may he rest in peace
Severely underrated. The band and ur channel as well
As soon as I read the title I was like "let's goooooo"
Hands down my new favorite channel. I really hope there's a lot more to come. I already watched every video. I liked the Silver Apples one. Now I have a new band to listen to
Les Rallizes Denudes is one of the greatest bands ever. A huge influence.
I didn't know about the communist hijacking stuff until much much later.
Same I've never heard of any of this!
That makes him even better tbh totally based.
this channel is pure gold about underground music
Ah yes, Les Rallizes Denudes, one of the best bands ever existed. Mizutani is probably one of the fathers of: No Wave, Punk Rock, Shoegaze, Noise Rock, Industrial, Post-Punk and many other genres, a true legend.
That would be true if anyone outside the half dozen of folks who listen to their music knew about them lmao. They certainly can be seen as some of the earlier examples of those genres, but they're not really the fathers of any of them.
@@rayres1074 lmao they'll be underground forever.
Btw yes, they were one of the first examples, not the true fathers
@@matteobanzilorenzetti2910 They're like Suicide, but instead of being anti-people, they're anti-capitalist. Equally deranged, mysterious and disturbing/-ed, though.
Get your head out of your own ass buddy lrd is lrd! Nothing more and nothing less!
I don’t think the No Wave scene really heard of LRD
this is amazing man. this is an amazing channel
The Mizutani record (bootleg?)still not on Spotify.
Shit is magic.
Unfortunately nothing released under the Rivista or UNIVIVE labels are on Spotify, and that’s all of the best stuff!
@@iamdamosuzuki_ is that on line? where can i listen to it?sorry if my english is broken, hope you can understand me
Jesus christ not everything is on Googles rip off service. buy music
Why would you guys prefer Spotify? I never used it. TH-cam just has such a huge range
@@drifter402 fair enough point except with obscurities that don't cost a normal price. I take your point that people shouldn't expect good music to grow on trees and for artists to go unpaid/be paid cents. Although punk and its close relations like garage and psychedelica prob had limited pressings, didn't expect to make much cash etc
wow, what i learned a lot more than i thought would in this video. thank you sir
Honestly one of my favorite bands ever
i definitely feel like a dude with a hylics 2 profile pic would be into this band lol
@@bogmanhimself4656 Played hylics and loved this band can confirm
I've watched all your videos since the beginning actually. and they've just been in my recommended for eternity but I've just subscribed today actually. you'll be one of the biggest channels on youtube some day.
RIP Mizutani
This is probably my new favorite channel. Great stuff!
If Mizutani ever reads these comments, I would like to ask him to please reemerge and play music publicly again...I discovered this band in 2021 and I am 53 and I think this band and especially his guitar playing touches upon rock perfection, for want of better words. Like nothingness made sonic, the universe with a voice or the Buddha with an electric guitar. It's true zen.......There are no adequate words to describe how amazing his guitar playing is and how mesmerising and important their music is....nothing is as honest, as heart wrenching, as spiritual, and as heavy as this band.........Mizutani , please at least talk about your art before you die....thank you
He already died
I *love* this channel. I really hope more videos come out soon. So well researched and put together.
Holy shit, I thought I would never live to see the day where Rallizes Denudes receives popularity. These guys also introduced me to "GRIM" another criminally underrated Japanese artist.
Huh, i don't think i've actually heard of Grim. Thanks for that heads up. Similar vein or completely different? Too lazy to google and prefer a human exchange. Will search later but wondering what for, besides their J status
@@mothratemporalradio517 I assume they mean Jun Konagaya/GRIM, the Japanese power electronics/industrial musician, I'd recommend their albums Folk Music and Maha if you like cold, mechanical, hypnotic noise/industrial
(Their compilation album "Folk Songs for an Obscure Race" is also really good if you want a mix of harsh and approachable, as it actually has a lot of psychedelic folk/neofolk tracks and influences)
@@blackenedizzycore Great! Thanks for the recommendations! I'm going to write those down. Cherrs, and i hope you're having a good one! 🚨🍕🎧
@@blackenedizzycore oh, i can't remember their name right now, but have you seen the Jp noise dude who plays prototypically modified desk fans and televisions, and also uses a barcode scanner and stuff? Trying to remember what his name is. His performances are nifty.
@@mothratemporalradio517 , maybe “Ujino and the Rotators” ? He’s an artist doing sound installations and performances. I have a DVD and have seen his installations twice in Japan.
thanks for making this! and the rest of ur vids
As a drone/doom fan, I'm shocked I've never even heard of these guys
Ive really enjoyed your documentaries lately. Some outstanding digs and wonderful discoveries. As a musician, I have been spending a lot of time looking in places Ive never looked before. As someone who has married into another culture, the discoveries I have enjoyed over the years, learning how small my American mind has been. I have been making music for nearly 34 years now, from Prog Rock to metal but have only recently discovered a growing appetite for the sounds of history outside the borders of my Western country. Your videos have been a delicious and informative find. I applaud your efforts and encourage you to continue your digging and discoveries as well. The 2020 world reset has provided a unique opportunity for me to spend time exploring new sounds, bands, projects and fantastic events that have remained hidden away until now. There have been profound bands and events that have carved out changes on the world stage that are worthy of being shared. For those who truly appreciate art, music and the creative souls opening the minds of those who dare to listen, I encourage them to spend some time with your many videos and I am confident they will learn a Great deal and find some inspiration as well. Salute to you good sir. Thank you for your efforts, interests and awesome story telling.
The only reason I know these guys exist is because of Space Funeral. I am so glad I found them.
I'm so grateful for the creator of Space Funeral to get us all in this place
It was the opposite for me, i found out about Space Funeral because of them
BLOOD
BLOOD
BLOOD
Wait HOW???
I've been meaning to play that game but I had no idea it had a reference to this band.
Now this is surprising, holy shit
Yooo I’ve always wondered about the band but never actually looked into them so thank you for this video!
Man i just found out this band few days ago reading the coments of VU's Sister Ray here on youtube. Then this video was recomended to me. Now i'm in love with this band. Its the nearest of the Velvet i,ve heard till now.
Interesting, i kinda wouldn't associate them too much with the VU myself
@@mothratemporalradio517 I think it's because of the noisy guitar or that "underground vibe" i linked them.
Love these videos man thank you!
this was unbelievably interesting
Your vidios are very high quality and incredibly fun to watch. You deserve honestly way more views then this and I really think you are up there with nerdstalgic and other big essay youtubers quality wise. If you keep posting with this consistent vidio quality you could become very big. We are all rooting for you :) (also this band is amazing thanks for the recommendation)
Favorite band of all time hands down. I thought Mizutani was a fisherman in Hokkaido lol
Great band to put on and just sit there and feel like between breaking into tears and feeling the most at peace. They have a certain magic unlike any other music group out there.
easily one of the most legendary noise rock bands of all time, so fucking good
is that lucky guy...
man i love your channel please post more often
Why the Japanese gotta be so ahead of the curve on everything, I'm so jealous!!
they are behind the curve on everything. their whole thing is they take something and make it their own unique way
Listen to SS from Japan, they were making 80s hardcore punk all the way back in 1977! Before the Americans had even gotten a full taste of the Ramones
I had discovered the band a while back, and was finding myself always coming back to their unique sound and always trying to remember their name. Its crazy I never knew they had such a history.
I learned about this band from reading about the Narita Airport riots.
This channel is a true gem
you should definitely should look into the yugoslavian band AZRA
maybe a bit more poppy but also a really interesting disappeared frontman doni stulic!
These videos are amazing and have shown me some amazing music keep it up
Kinda wondering who they talked to in 2020 if he died in 2019 now...
If I’m not mistaken, the band member he spoke to clarified they had spoke in 2019 before he had died
Thank you! Always wanted to know more about these dudes
You know it’s a good video when you feel like you’ve been watching for an hour but only 3 minutes have gone by.!
Please keep making these vids they are so gooddddd
Saw these cats in Shanghai, while on vacation, just out of the jungle.
from Nam. I was trippin balls on some killer micro. Haven’t been the same since
Dude that sounds awesome haha
i wish microdots would come back :( double barrel purples
I thought the communist Chinese saw rock’n’roll as an instrument of American imperialism, they’d actively suppress any counterculture movement and rock’n’roll.
@@chrishenniker5944 don’t be daft. Beijing had an awesome punk rock scene in the 90’s.
@@jeremybiggs8413 Isn’t Chinese arts policy based on socialist realism? The CCP sees punk rock as fascist, as did all communist parties behind the iron curtain.
Very very good, dignified, wonderful, just like Rallizes! Chapeau!
japanese bands are amazing. ahead of its time
i would kill for a live les rallizes denudes concert
hoping you do something on charlie megira, jim sullivan or spacemen 3 somewhere in the future. great work on all of these videos 🤝
Thank you, this was great!
The one time I saw Smash Mouth... it was literally at a country fair haha
Great doc on Les Rallizes Dénudés!
watched this vid and instantly got hooked on them. What is it about this grossly distorted sound that is so beautiful
It was just confirmed that Mizutani died in 2019. RIP.
A new fan of your channel, I must check out this band and the ones in your video about rock in China, awesome work really. Greetings from Mexico!
