The early Pre Unit Triumph's had no provision for an O ring on the rocker shafts .I would just give them a wipe with some Hermitite Green , which you cannont get any more, sadly but you can still get American made Shellac which I do prefer to modern sealants .
STOP!!! Your bike is absolutely spotless. I don't see a drop of oil. Leave it alone. You're making us look bad by the pristine condition of your motor.😀😀😀
I'm surprised you needed to file the end of the spindle to fit the guide sleeve. All I had to do when I fitted mine was polish around the end briefly with steel wool, and the sleeve went straight on. I always fit new copper washers to the banjo unions, but you if you don't have them, it would pay to anneal the old washers before reusing them. With the tappet cover gaskets, I cut my own from 1/32" (0.8mm) gasket paper (it's easy to draw around the cover, or an old gasket, as a template). When I fit them I smear a little grease on each side, so they won't stick next time I remove them. If they do start to weep after a while, all you need to do is nip the bolts up a bit to stop it.
Hi Rick, it looked like the previous owner had hit the ends of the spindles to get them in and in doing so opened them up a bit, there were some marks on the end of the spindle so I'm guessing that's what he or someone did. The tappet covers were all warped so I smoothed them flat using 1500 grit wet n dry on a flat surface, I do have that gasket paper but will use all the existing ones up first. I took a while but I can run the gasket paper through my printer and print off the rocker gaskets exactly the same size now, saves on the tracing ;)
@@OldBiker I never thought of printing out the gasket outlines, that's something I'll consider. I was lucky with mine, it had only done 1300 miles from new when I bought it and nobody had done anything to it, so I'd only have myself to blame for any abuse it's suffered (it's had its fair share of verbal abuse over the years, but I've always resisted the temptation to take a hammer to it).
major success on my t140d did the 2a1 set up on my carbs hadnt removed the jet in the bellmouth lol.2 years off pissing about and thats all it was, bike now idles at 1000 rpm which it never did b4,and settles down to a ticker after only 2 minutes or so ..amazing just need a roadtest but pissing down lol.all this time u couldnt write a sketch about it lol.love her to bits most fun bike ive ever owned i was about to do a tiger head conversion lol we shall see but looking promissing.
You could just have used some feeler gauge material or a strip of Mylar (old 35mm photo film) around the o-ring to feed the rubber into the hole. Even chamfer the rocker hole entrance to glide the ring past.
I'm putting some new rocker box spindle seals on a 78 Bonnie I picked up recently. The end of the spindle didn't fit through the tight end of the tool... same as yours. I was worried that sanding it or filing it down might create a leak somehow but I think i'll try. Otherwise I can't use the tool.
Is it best to leave a mm or so of the spindle (the o-ring end) sticking out, or should it be totally flush with the rocker box? I've seen a few where that spindle is knocked all the way in, making it totally flush and others that leave a mm or so proud of the rocker box. Maybe it doesn't matter. I don't understand why they don't make the bottom of the tappet more of a round shape... because some of them sit on the valve stems at an angle, so you're only getting the edge of the tappet to make content and measure the clearance with. My 64 TR6 is better about matching up the tappet and the valve stems, they seem to sit a little flatter than my T140.
I like your cross tattoo, does it have a meaning? I might have put spindle in a drill chuck, spin it and hold file on it. 6 of 1 half dozen of the other I suppose.
cushty ! always good to see no oil weeps anywhere on an engine you've rebuilt yourself. Thought I'd get in quick before I'm No 13 again lol Hey where's the rain ?? we have been half under water the past week in South Somerset . haven't been able to do anything outdoors and I'm dying to fit the carbs and go for a blast .
Were you able to get the spindle to not turn when tightening the nut, or did it tighten enough despite some turning? I'd like to replace my acorn nuts with some shiny new ones, but I'm worried the spindle will turn and I won't be able to tighten things back up (or get the old nut off). It doesn't seem like there's anything holding the spindle in place to get some torque on.
Why did you not just undo both rocker shafts hand tight nut tap it through gently until you can see o ring, cut of old o ring, rubber grease new o ring push it on lots of grease around shaft , then just tighten the nut back up pulling shaft with o ring into place, no need to make a 5 min job in to the way you just put your self through , I have had no problems with both mine done that way.
I got a meriden 750. for a bike that looks great, and handles beautifully .. shame the product design (a.k.a. engineering) is so poxy. Particularly dislike the push fit (‘fit’ is a misnomer) exhausts ..and the crumby switchgear. Love riding it .. but spend far too much time effing around with spanners. BMW’s …you just ride!
Nifty little o ring tool, i will have to get one of them👍🏻
Yeah John, cheap but a well handy little gem

haha it never goes out if there is the slightest hint of rain, my mates on is even better looking, he has the T140D model

bit off black rtv high temperature silicone as well helps.

Loctite MR5922 , takes forever to go off but does with heat

Its raining on and off all the time here at the mo, all the bikes are lined up and ready for riding haha

Yeah it did turn but I used one of those 18v impact drivers to snug it up, if your just changing the nut it should be fine.
