So basically, the entire point of the flights are to see just how many ways the game can break, so 343 can fix them. Not to mention give input on balance and design choices.
I really did wish 343 didnt just do a random pick from the hat flight and instead only invited people who were in the insider program long enough cause most of the people who get into flights have no idea what the status of the game is. They dont realize this isnt a beta and its just for the hardcore fans to rlly get a feel for the game cause the community has been so skeptical of the game and worried its another halo 4 or 5. *Volunteers for tech test* “Why is there so many bugs” “Why is there a stress test?” Thinks it’s coming out tomorrow & using this as a review for the game. Dude is gonna be confused as hell when they ask for a feedback report about the bots and bugs.
The tech demo isn’t only for stress testing, it’s also to see how different PC configurations work with the game and also feedback on the equipment, weapons and UI.
I feel like he slightly misunderstands the point of this, I would say he thinks its more of a beta when in reality it is basically a test for some features of the game.
Curious though, what are they stress testing here that they couldn't using their QA team? The servers? I doubt they've got the dedicated server infrastructure in place yet, and it wouldn't be worthwhile at this point as they've restricted the numbers so they're not getting a data set that reflects the actual stress the servers would get. The gameplay engine? That should be tested by their internal QA. The features? Again, that should be tested by internal QA before showing it to the public, though I suppose players can do some wacky things that even the most dedicated QA team wouldn't be able to catch; still that should be sorted out during the beta and what should be a dedicated development period after the beta to fix the bugs. The net code? Yeah, this could would be improved with real players, but again, they'd only get a realistic data set during the beta when they have real load levels. Like, you should stress test your close-to-finished product in realistic scenarios. Stress testing when you're only partially done could certainly expose some bugs, but you run into decreasing returns the more you do it: you could use a massive amount of time to stress test your game 10 times and find 10 bugs each time for a total of 100 bugs, or you could stress test once and find 60 bugs; neither of those are optimal, but it's a balancing act because every time your perform a stress test/developing cycle, that's a week or two added onto the development time, or more. And again, the beta should be the real stress test because that's when you'll get realistic numbers and scenarios with your planned, hopefully nearly finished design. But I think Charlie's complaints are based less around what the developers intended to achieve with this, and more around what they did achieve: This is the first impression of the gameplay for many people. You only get to make that first impression once. Regardless of what the developers said about their intention with this technical display or whatever they call it, they should have been cognizant that this is going out to the fans and that people WILL make opinions and impressions based on this. Powerful and deeply held opinions that will shape discourse which they will not have a chance to challenge until their next big event. And the opinion Charlie has, and which I believe many others will have from either watching or actually participating, is that this is average/mediocre. And that means the devs will have a much longer road ahead in the public's opinion than if they had waited until the beta, where they have their ducks all put in a row and could really impress people. That's I think Charlie's getting at when the says this was worthless: from a development perspective, they might get useful information; but from a PR perspective, they've shot themselves in the foot.
@@bolbi914 I didn't get to play this so I can't speak to how it felt to play, but from what I saw on Charlie's video, there didn't seem to be many things different from previous Halo titles or from other FPS games. Please feel free to correct me if I'm missing something or if Charlie's video failed to show off some gameplay modes or other features. In terms of cost, it's still relevant to have an efficient development cycle and good impressions of your game, even if it's free. Heck, I'd say it's more important because without the guaranteed income of a 60$ game, the company developing the game has to be more efficient with their costs. And from a PR perspective, just because the game is free doesn't mean people will flock to the game. Building that opening day hype and getting those first impressions up is incredibly important for both paid games and, again I'd argue even moreso for, free games. Free games NEED traffic. They live on hype until they can build a dedicated user base. That means careful PR management throughout the game's life. If they mess it up, or even if they just don't do a good enough job to grow a sustainable user base long enough to have sunk-cost fallacies, the game dies.

Feel free to let me know if Charlie just didn't access any other gameplay modes or features though. I'll renege on my comment on the efficiency on this as a server test, as on further reflection I suppose they could be reusing server assets to run this. Still, that they have restricted the playbase for this technical preview means that they are not getting accurate data on player volume compared to what they will get when the game is open, though I will concede that there is other important technical data that can be gleamed from the current preview's scope. One thing I'd argue is that, if you're reaching out to the public, it's always Public Relations. Even if the you don't intend it to be. People WILL form opinions no matter what the intention of the interaction is; I won't comment on whether that's good or bad, it's just a fact which any company should take into account when reaching out to the public.

I have a genuine question. It seems in the recent years the customer is being involved further and further into the earlier stages of development. But wouldn't it lead to more of these less informed takes? And shouldn't it be expected, not all of your customers are going to be software engineers like yourself?
This. I think that people need to understand that it wasn’t meant for everyone in the community to get hyped about the game. This was meant for the die hard fans who signed up as insiders to help find issues and test the core gameplay. People are forgetting that when you sign up for early flight builds, you shouldn’t expect as much content as a beta.

As an insider that’s been around for years, it does get annoying that many of these people only see it as “early access.” This whole tech preview was to provide feedback and to find bugs that 343 might not have noticed. Granted the build is 2 months behind what they have currently, they still want feedback on the gameplay and such, which is what we’re supposed to do. I sincerely hope that people actually write their reviews and participate in the surveys because I feel like a lot of people only signed on to play the game and not “test” the game in the way it’s supposed to.
Kinda salty because I’ve been in every flight since Reach for PC, and I still didn’t get invited to infinite’s test. But every streamer I know got it to complain about how bad it is for a “Beta” without actually reading the terms of the test

I look at twitch and youtube and it really seems like nobody (aside from channels who specifically make Halo content) thinks this is anything other than a beta. I’d like to think people like Charlie aren’t a complete waste of an Insider slot because they’re at least still helping with the stress testing if nothing else.

The point is that they were going to release an even worse version of this game already last year and the only reason it didn't come out is because of fan backlash. It's easy to doubt they will actually fix this before it's released. The multiplayer is already going to be free anyway which is a license for them to fuck it up.
Totally agree with you, I feel like he didn't watch the livestream about what the flight was about. Complain about how dumb the bots were and what not. They explained everything about the progression of the flights until launch. Just feels bad he has a large audience to persuade and he's doing the disserves to all the people on the fence about this game.

Considering the fact that it is a "technical preview" and not a beta. I was completely fine with the rocky launch of it. This was kinda one of the purposes of it, to find as many issues as they can.
That's not the point of a tech preview.. nothing warranted it either... tech previews are to showcase NEW and UNIQUE technical aspects of a game. This is literally the same exact tech from every shooter/halo ever.... shit excuse for an even shittier demo. This is why they have half a billion in budget.... for QA and development. This isn't some indie team.

Ik a lot of people are memeing about the whole “tech demo not a beta” thing but like honestly, this really wasn’t meant to be as big as it was lol. Half the reason it was in a “rough state” was because people were being NUTTY trying to get in and play it. It was meant for Halo Insiders who have been doing these tech tests for the last couple years starting with Reach MCC. The actual Beta will definitely happen and probably be closer to October or November. For now they’re just trying to see what actual like hardcore fans think of the gameplay and what they can do to tweak things. This. If you watch 343 talk about the demo, the idea was to see how the core elements if the game would run on different hardware, and if the community would enjoy the core gameplay. This wasn't meant to be a very big thing
If you've ever played any game ever in beta public releases then you'd know that the unfinished product you play in beta is the unfinished beta you play on release date with at most 2-3 graphical big fixes with none of the gameplay bugs being addressed. You put way too much confidence in game developers if you think that infinite isn't already what they're going to shill out on release day for $59.99.

A rough start? The whole point of this was to have the players A. K. A the target audience test the game for themselves and report back with any issues so that these problems can be fixed before launch. This whole beta was given to the fans with the expectation that there would be problems.

Brainworm removed charile’s ability to read/watch the flighting info before signing up. It’s not off to a rough start because it hasn’t even started yet! It’s like saying a car runs like shit while it’s still being built and their just testing the engine systems.
imma be honest, it just sounds like Charlie signed up for the flight without reading or watching anything about it. they said multiple times that they would be gradually adding content over the flight, and that they plan on testing actual player vs player multiplayer this weekend, but I guess he missed all that. While there was lots of hype generated over this, I don't feel like "hype" was the original purpose of the flight. They are going to have more flights later to test more content, and probably a Halo 5/Halo Reach style beta closer to lauch so more people can see how the game is.

The only thing we can really assess here is the fundamental gameplay, which looks pretty damn solid.
It’s literally a few months from release. Maybe a like month from manufacturing hard copies. It’s hardly some early pre-pre-alpha version as you’re implying.
The whole point of this preview was to find bugs and make sure that the launch of the game is as smooth as possible. If you go into the game expecting a polished and smooth experience, and you’re treating it as an early release, then you’re already setting yourself up for failure and missing the entire point of why this preview exists; it’s for the developers, not the audience. The entire signing up process should be evidence of that.
That's a perfect start imo. Release the bare minimum of features that will be in the game, then gradually scale it AND (most importantly) constantly collect player feedback and add/tweak stuff based on that. If that's the way 343 is going to take with Halo Infinite then we're in for a glorious resurrection of the Halo series.
The point was to test the bots. It wasn’t to hype everyone up even more. Kinda disappointed that you don’t to see the point of it. That’s why there’s only one map, and it’s always against bots. Because we’re testing out the bots. As simple as that.

What. I'm in game development and know this isn't a "tech demo". I think it's fun but god damn this game needs to be delayed even if this is an old build. A lot of it seems very very unfinished.
I'm having a lot of fun with it; the weapons feel balanced and are fun to use, the game looks great even on low settings, and the audio design is superb.

I think he just made a genuine mistake in his understanding of what this build was. He seems to think it’s a beta rather than a legitimate tech demo. Of course if that’s his belief as of that stream, he would criticize it like a beta test at the time.
Cod is hella easy, but when Modern Warfare 2019 first came out that was next level sweat fest energy. Couldn't even cross a street or run through a door without getting corner peaked, head glitched, quick scoped, mp5 with max agility slapped, or the infamous claymore behind every single door that gave you trust issues 😂
Considering it's a flight test when I was actually able to finally get into the games multi-player, it made me excited for the release of the game. They took out a lot of stuff Halo 5 added which makes it feel so much more like Halo Reach, which in my opinion is a great thing. The speed is perfect, the guns feel great although they really bumped up the recoil on the AR. Wasn't able to find out for sure but I don't think they have assassinations in the build, they might not add it at all which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Overall I feel confident that Halo is back.
No assassination's, I was behind a bot for this build and only Ninja it. They also did mention in the Halo stream that by launch, assassinations wouldn't really be a thing until they add it in later, though my memory may be spotty, so i recommend checking the Halo stream if you want more accurate info.
The game feels great I’m not gonna lie but the visual presentation, optimization and at times oddly the pacing of the combat needs to really make a change in the coming months cause this is a good game, but it’s nowhere near the 500 million dollar revival the Halo franchise needs. But it’s still in “tech-demo” so we’ll just have to see.

@@Hords The PVP they turned on for an hour was a sweat fest and was actually shitty. Cross play ruined the experience and there was no option to turn it off. Imagine thinking it's fair putting PC against console with extremely reduced aim assist.

Nah I've been having a hella lotta bugs but I still disagree with Charlie, flights are testing small portions of the game to them iterate those changes to the whole game. If they built most of the game and released it and it was as buggy as this they would then have to fix the entire game rather than this small slice they released. It's the same reason Halo on PC released in pieces, so features didn't have to be retroactively added to every game

Usually I think Charlie is one of the most reasonable people on the internet, but the huff over a technical TEST build is very very silly. The whole point of this is to fix problems with the game, it’s not a demo of a finished product.

This game's gonna be sweet. I've played a couple matches and I gotta say, the bots are surprisingly intelligent (Though they do have some funky behavior, such as their entire team going to the right side of the map as soon as the game starts). Infinite's version of the AR is one of the best I've seen. All of the weapons except the bulldog and heatwave feel fantastic to shoot. I love the inventory feature regarding powerups and grenades, and the ability to drop weapons or ping areas are great additions. The weapon drills are something that should have been in Halo from the start; They're absolutely perfect for sharpening your Sniper skills or experimenting with weapons in a low-stress environment. It really makes you *feel* like a Spartan; Halo's back, and better than ever. Can't wait for it to come out in November!
I highly disagree, I think the game looks great so far, the gameplay looks crispy, and the whole reason they’re even doing the flight tests is to test out the bots. The next flight, whenever it is, will most likely have way more content. I think it’s great that they’re play testing their game, shows that they really want this free to play multiplayer and mechanics to work! Hoping to be able to experience and play in the next flight!

Yeah I don’t think guy understands it’s a tech demo. It’s literally been emphasized 49000 times. It wasn’t for stress testing it was just to optimize bots atleast this one. The gameplay is amazing I’m hyped if it’s this good with bots and no content I can only imagine what it’ll be like at max content
Gotta remember that they said this flight build is a few months old, which means this build had most of the systems in play, and that most of the work they've done since then is probably optimizations
Not just that, the servers aren't at full usage cause remember why would a company utilize 100% of their servers where only a few select people were chosen and not just that 343 literally stated that this build purposely had a lot of things cut so that they could focus on bot testing
I'm honestly really happy to see so many people calling him out on this. I absolutely love Charlie's content, but he is *way* off the mark with this. He clearly doesn't understand what this is actually supposed to be and the purposes it's meant to serve.
@@ryanharvey2662 They added a couple more maps aswell as cranked up the bot difficulty and even enabled pvp. The point of this flight was to actually train the AI that runs the bots so they could learn from the players. When training an AI its best to give it lots of data, doing that would not be possible with just the in house testers. And it payed off, aside from a few querks the bots learned a lot of strategies and became quite good, a few evin learned to t-bag...
@@spartan5280 I think Microsoft being a multi billion dollar company has enough money to pay for a large enough pool of testers for ai development and I'm pretty sure having basic ai play of itself for learning could achieve similar results. Regardless, I feel they could have just waited for the beta to generate hype or test servers but thats just from an outside perspective. Had no real interest in halo games past 3, just from a critical standpoint it seems awkward and unnecessary.

Curious though, what are they stress testing here that they couldn't using their QA team? The servers? I doubt they've got the dedicated server infrastructure in place yet, and it wouldn't be worthwhile at this point as they've restricted the numbers so they're not getting a data set that reflects the actual stress the servers would get. The gameplay engine? That should be tested by their internal QA. The features? Again, that should be tested by internal QA before showing it to the public, though I suppose players can do some wacky things that even the most dedicated QA team wouldn't be able to catch; still that should be sorted out during the beta and what should be a dedicated development period after the beta to fix the bugs. The net code? Yeah, this could would be improved with real players, but again, they'd only get a realistic data set during the beta when they have real load levels.
Like, you should stress test your close-to-finished product in realistic scenarios. Stress testing when you're only partially done could certainly expose some bugs, but you run into decreasing returns the more you do it: you could use a massive amount of time to stress test your game 10 times and find 10 bugs each time for a total of 100 bugs, or you could stress test once and find 60 bugs; neither of those are optimal, but it's a balancing act because every time your perform a stress test/developing cycle, that's a week or two added onto the development time, or more. And again, the beta should be the real stress test because that's when you'll get realistic numbers and scenarios with your planned, hopefully nearly finished design.
But I think Charlie's complaints are based less around what the developers intended to achieve with this, and more around what they did achieve: This is the first impression of the gameplay for many people. You only get to make that first impression once. Regardless of what the developers said about their intention with this technical display or whatever they call it, they should have been cognizant that this is going out to the fans and that people WILL make opinions and impressions based on this. Powerful and deeply held opinions that will shape discourse which they will not have a chance to challenge until their next big event.
And the opinion Charlie has, and which I believe many others will have from either watching or actually participating, is that this is average/mediocre. And that means the devs will have a much longer road ahead in the public's opinion than if they had waited until the beta, where they have their ducks all put in a row and could really impress people. That's I think Charlie's getting at when the says this was worthless: from a development perspective, they might get useful information; but from a PR perspective, they've shot themselves in the foot.
@@bolbi914 I didn't get to play this so I can't speak to how it felt to play, but from what I saw on Charlie's video, there didn't seem to be many things different from previous Halo titles or from other FPS games. Please feel free to correct me if I'm missing something or if Charlie's video failed to show off some gameplay modes or other features.
In terms of cost, it's still relevant to have an efficient development cycle and good impressions of your game, even if it's free. Heck, I'd say it's more important because without the guaranteed income of a 60$ game, the company developing the game has to be more efficient with their costs. And from a PR perspective, just because the game is free doesn't mean people will flock to the game. Building that opening day hype and getting those first impressions up is incredibly important for both paid games and, again I'd argue even moreso for, free games.
Free games NEED traffic. They live on hype until they can build a dedicated user base. That means careful PR management throughout the game's life. If they mess it up, or even if they just don't do a good enough job to grow a sustainable user base long enough to have sunk-cost fallacies, the game dies.
@Dancing Swords I can't comment on whether the people in general are having fun, though from what I saw in this video things didn't look too different from previous Halo titles or other FPS games. Feel free to let me know if Charlie just didn't access any other gameplay modes or features though. I'll renege on my comment on the efficiency on this as a server test, as on further reflection I suppose they could be reusing server assets to run this. Still, that they have restricted the playbase for this technical preview means that they are not getting accurate data on player volume compared to what they will get when the game is open, though I will concede that there is other important technical data that can be gleamed from the current preview's scope.
One thing I'd argue is that, if you're reaching out to the public, it's always Public Relations. Even if the you don't intend it to be. People WILL form opinions no matter what the intention of the interaction is; I won't comment on whether that's good or bad, it's just a fact which any company should take into account when reaching out to the public.
I mean it's literally meant for feedback and ironing out bugs, this isn't the Beta so I'm cool with it like this.

As an insider that’s been around for years, it does get annoying that many of these people only see it as “early access.”
This whole tech preview was to provide feedback and to find bugs that 343 might not have noticed. Granted the build is 2 months behind what they have currently, they still want feedback on the gameplay and such, which is what we’re supposed to do. I sincerely hope that people actually write their reviews and participate in the surveys because I feel like a lot of people only signed on to play the game and not “test” the game in the way it’s supposed to.

I look at twitch and youtube and it really seems like nobody (aside from channels who specifically make Halo content) thinks this is anything other than a beta.
I’m also an Insider and regular participant in flights who didn’t receive an invitation and now have to sit here and watch shit like this. I’d like to think people like Charlie aren’t a complete waste of an Insider slot because they’re at least still helping with the stress testing if nothing else.

The point is that they were going to release an even worse version of this game already last year and the only reason it didn't come out is because of fan backlash. Ik a lot of people are memeing about the whole “tech demo not a beta” thing but like honestly, this really wasn’t meant to be as big as it was lol. Half the reason it was in a “rough state” was because people were being NUTTY trying to get in and play it. It was meant for Halo Insiders who have been doing these tech tests for the last couple years starting with Reach MCC. The actual Beta will definitely happen and probably be closer to October or November. For now they’re just trying to see what actual like hardcore fans think of the gameplay and what they can do to tweak things. It was meant to be broken, and people really probably should not have been treating it like it was some open beta celebration for the return of Halo

If you've ever played any game ever in beta public releases then you'd know that the unfinished product you play in beta is the unfinished beta you play on release date with at most 2-3 graphical big fixes with none of the gameplay bugs being addressed. I mean I appreciate they are doing these previews to get the feedback necessary for a better game. The flights are something they’ve been doing for all the master chief collection games and they were very helpful. This isn’t a beta. The beta will come later. The flight, will evolve as they do.

A rough start? The whole point of this was to have the players A. K. A the target audience test the game for themselves and report back with any issues so that these problems can be fixed before launch. This whole beta was given to the fans with the expectation that there would be problems.

imma be honest, it just sounds like Charlie signed up for the flight without reading or watching anything about it. they said multiple times that they would be gradually adding content over the flight, and that they plan on testing actual player vs player multiplayer this weekend, but I guess he missed all that. While there was lots of hype generated over this, I don't feel like "hype" was the original purpose of the flight. They are going to have more flights later to test more content, and probably a Halo 5/Halo Reach style beta closer to lauch so more people can see how the game is.

The whole point of this preview was to find bugs and make sure that the launch of the game is as smooth as possible. If you go into the game expecting a polished and smooth experience, and you’re treating it as an early release, then you’re already setting yourself up for failure and missing the entire point of why this preview exists; it’s for the developers, not the audience. The entire signing up process should be evidence of that.

That's a perfect start imo. Release the bare minimum of features that will be in the game, then gradually scale it AND (most importantly) constantly collect player feedback and add/tweak stuff based on that. Considering it's a flight test when I was actually able to finally get into the games multi-player, it made me excited for the release of the game. They took out a lot of stuff Halo 5 added which makes it feel so much more like Halo Reach, which in my opinion is a great thing. The speed is perfect, the guns feel great although they really bumped up the recoil on the AR. Wasn't able to find out for sure but I don't think they have assassinations in the build, they might not add it at all which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Overall I feel confident that Halo is back.
No assassination's, I was behind a bot for this build and only Ninja it. They also did mention in the Halo stream that by launch, assassinations wouldn't really be a thing until they add it in later, though my memory may be spotty, so i recommend checking the Halo stream if you want more accurate info.

The game feels great I’m not gonna lie but the visual presentation, optimization and at times oddly the pacing of the combat needs to really make a change in the coming months cause this is a good game, but it’s nowhere near the 500 million dollar revival the Halo franchise needs.

Nah I've been having a hella lotta bugs but I still disagree with Charlie, flights are testing small portions of the game to them iterate those changes to the whole game. If they built most of the game and released it and it was as buggy as this they would then have to fix the entire game rather than this small slice they released.
It's the same reason Halo on PC released in pieces, so features didn't have to be retroactively added to every game

This game's gonna be sweet. I've played a couple matches and I gotta say, the bots are surprisingly intelligent (Though they do have some funky behavior, such as their entire team going to the right side of the map as soon as the game starts). Infinite's version of the AR is one of the best I've seen. All of the weapons except the bulldog and heatwave feel fantastic to shoot. I love the inventory feature regarding powerups and grenades, and the ability to drop weapons or ping areas are great additions. The weapon drills are something that should have been in Halo from the start; They're absolutely perfect for sharpening your Sniper skills or experimenting with weapons in a low-stress environment. It really makes you *feel* like a Spartan; Halo's back, and better than ever. Can't wait for it to come out in November!

I highly disagree, I think the game looks great so far, the gameplay looks crispy, and the whole reason they’re even doing the flight tests is to test out the bots. The next flight, whenever it is, will most likely have way more content. I think it’s great that they’re play testing their game, shows that they really want this free to play multiplayer and mechanics to work! Hoping to be able to experience and play in the next flight!

I'm honestly really happy to see so many people calling him out on this. I absolutely love Charlie's content, but he is *way* off the mark with this. He clearly doesn't understand what this is actually supposed to be and the purposes it's meant to serve.
Seems like a waste to put the testing of a boring stage with boring bots for a product about to come out to your fans and not your workers or interns.
@@ryanharvey2662 They added a couple more maps aswell as cranked up the bot difficulty and even enabled pvp. The point of this flight was to actually train the AI that runs the bots so they could learn from the players. When training an AI its best to give it lots of data, doing that would not be possible with just the in house testers. And it payed off, aside from a few querks the bots learned a lot of strategies and became quite good, a few evin learned to t-bag...
@@spartan5280 I think Microsoft being a multi billion dollar company has enough money to pay for a large enough pool of testers for ai development and I'm pretty sure having basic ai play of itself for learning could achieve similar results. Regardless, I feel they could have just waited for the beta to generate hype or test servers but thats just from an outside perspective. Had no real interest in halo games past 3, just from a critical standpoint it seems awkward and unnecessary.
