  • Whole health and the whole health approach received a lot of attention in 2023. The move toward a cultural transformation in care delivery to include prevention and treatment and conventional and complementary approaches that embeds each patient in a “circle of health” was noted by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as a potential model for higher-value care nationally. Prioritizing a person-centered, integrated approach to health care that focuses on health creation and well-being by incorporating patients’ goals into their health care changes the focus from “what’s the matter with you?” to “what matters to you?” If that sounds a lot like functional medicine, it should; these two models of care are aligned in many ways. Today, we welcome IFM CEO Amy R. Mack, along with IFM Directors of Medical Education Doctors Robert Luby and Dan Lukaczer for a conversation through the lens of whole health, with a look back on the important themes that emerged in 2023 and a look ahead to what is to come for the whole health approach and functional medicine.

As a nutritional “enthusiast” I really enjoyed several topics, such as the 5 elements of whole health focusing on People. Holistic & Comprehensive Approach. Upstream & Root Cause Focused. Patient Accountability. Team Well-being.
If our healthcare system incorporates a more holistic approach to individualized healing, along with, as Amy mentioned, “ understanding what happened before, and why are you are sick today, and OK how can all health help you get to those things you care about”
Dr. Lukaczer talked about the importance of social connections as necessary tool for optimal wellness.
One interesting topic I am intrigued to learn more about is “post-biotics” and “protein requirements with aging”
Lastly, Dr. Luby mentioned “food transparency” and not letting the food industry off the hook when it comes to the quality of our food.
Thank you all for sharing your insight and knowledge around functional medicine and individualized holistic health.

Amazing information. I recently went through the IFM training and certification. It changed my practice and is changing the lives of my patients. So grateful

Where does one find a Functional Medicine doctor who is "in-network" - who is covered by insurance and Medicare? I'm having trouble with that aspect. And is there an insurance company who knows what Functional Medicine is? The help desk of my Insurance company (insultingly?) wanted to know if I need a psychiatrist after I tired to explain Functional Medicine,
