I've been waiting about 40 years for someone to explain this stuff. Thank you!

Thanks for the detailed overview of ski design. I appreciate your use of the term rocker to describe tip splay. Skis be skis and its useful to use the same terms for ski design from water skis to dh skis and xc.

At 03:28 the other point to make is, if the middle of the ski is contacting the snow and bearing significant weight, you're also de-weighting the tip and tail, which is going to hurt stability and the make the ski very squirrelly. You want XC skis to track straight, always. In contrast, downhill skis with a rocker or mild single camber base and significant sidecut are built to turn.

Great video. Now I better understand the(ski) vocabulary you use when talking about the ski characteristics. Classic ski video I hope is on the way.

You mean video DURING the trip? Not so much chance of that! It's not my working environment, and we need to respect that companies have proprietary ways of working that they don't want to share too openly. We have really strong relationships and need to be careful to maintain appropriate boundaries.

Have you ever tried to measure real world force application to try to help characterize the dynamics that vary from person to person? Or can you do this with video analysis? I find this interesting because I’m not really sure how I would characterize these dynamics in myself.

Do skate skis also have a double camber?

The quality control is not capable of being as precise as stated here.
Even custom built skis that are "hand fitted" to an individual elite skier that are guaranteed to be uniform from pair to pair even when some sort of "pressure profile" is used to try to reproduce a previously fast ski.
The subject is half science, half voodoo. One can get close, but fantastic skis are fantastic skis and should be cherished and guarded carefully.

I always say "abra-cadabra & hocus-pocus". The only real test is what happens on the snow. It takes a half-ass good skier to go through a whole lot of skis in a whole lot of conditions with a lot of different wax & structure jobs, BLA-BLA-BLA...in the meantime you have bought 10 pairs of skis & you never have the right ones on your feet !!!
Ever wonder why élite skiers have 60 pairs of skis on the go...?? 😂😂

    Keep it short,
I think you could summarize those 30 first mins.
Don’t go on about all those gimmicky beliefs. Most of wich are applied from classic to skate disregardedly.
Contrary to classic techniques, when alternative skating The ski is not a beam, it’s a blade going from flat to edge, a skate and it’s not in a groove,
That means you ain’t stable on a hip while loading and gliding the ski, the more the speed the more the chatter disruption of that upright miracle , so it’s all about dampening the trail.
That is if you are out for speed, and effectiveness, wich most skaters are.
Every time you see a faster skate skis, it’s because it has the best shock absorbers that dampens the snow uneven compaction and glide thus enabling the skaters balancing form threw uneven snow.
Sure suspension tuning is a thing, but you can’t really tune insufficient shocks.
There might be those days where you don’t need a lot suspension, and that special less springy skates becomes a little more effective, but your springy all arounders doesn’t underperforme that much on those days, and those magic less springgy skates won’t shine much threw other conditions…
So when i get a skate ski for a good skater, I get a shock adsorber.
When you talk about how the skater hits or compacts the snow, you basically mean what the shape of their legs and hips lets them do best.
Skaters with inward knees and small pelvis will kick it, staters with cask shape legs will press more gradually, the first doesn’t need as much dampening at speed because he can bend his ankle and knee in a closer plane. The second is using more out of plane momentun compensation, he needs a more forgiving shock absorber.
Say that on youtube clearly and you’ll get more people understanding skate skiing.
Your hips and legs shape dictates your needs and do more difference than snow conditions, when choosing a flex pattern.
And a lot of hi-end skates are way too soft or too ridgig in the middle , so bad dampening.
Manufacturer should concentrate on those two legs shapes stride paterns needs, and focus on producing reliable and repeatable shocks absorption.
