this is one of my favorite movies! it always makes me tear up, especially when you realize that the last word Akeelah had to spell was the same one that she learned from Dr. Larabee on the first day she meets him at her school. talk about fate! thanks for another great reaction Nick ❤
5:08 Akeela’s friend meant that if she can spell as easy as Akeela then getting a job as a flying attendant will be easy too. So she basically telling Akeela to have more confidence in herself. Which is something we all need if we have a passion for a certain talent we want to improve.
I also Nick want say I appreciate how you put yourself in Akeela’s shoes. I love that you felt how she felt. That’s how you connect with the characters of a film. I’m glad I’m not the only who does that.

Thank you for watching this!!! I was in the spelling bee as a kid, I was 11. One of my friends joined with me, and when we were doing the school championship finals I flunked on purpose so he could win because I felt bad, he told me about how his life at home was really crumby and his mom was mean to him. I was so upset, I was so close to going to championships outside of the school, and I was already in Mensa and was so excited. I came home devestated...about a week later, I caught this movie on accident on TV in my garage, and watched the whole thing. I cried so hard. From beginning to end. I felt just like Akeelah, my parents were divorcing, my big sister and brother were always causing problems for my mom, and I was always bringing my chip on my shoulder with me everywhere I went just like Akeelah. I love this movie with a passion.
The best teachers are the ones who can recognise a student's learning methods, and addapt their lesson plans accordingly.
I saw this movie years after it came out and it is one of my feel good movies. She is a pretty versatile actress. She did a fantastic job with - "JUMP IN" and "THE LONGSHOTS."
Those movies were good.

I am so happy you enjoyed this movie. I remember seeing it in the theatre and buying the movie on DVD. Definitely a feel-good gem that every young kid should watch.
I remember seeing it before Christmas in 2006, I was 13.
One of my favorite movies growing up, inspired me so much! If you’ve seen the Black Panther movies, you might recognize the actress playing Akeelah’s mother, Angela Bassett, as Ramonda, T’Challa’s mother! She and Laurence Fishburne have co-starred in quite a few movies together besides this one, including What’s Love Got to Do With It where they played Tina Turner and Ike Turner (which earned them each their first Oscar nominations!); it’s tough to watch at times but Bassett and Fishburne’s performances are both so magnetic and worth it.

Fun fact - the spelling pronouncer Dr. Jacques Bailly played himself during the film and is still the Scripps National Spelling Bee pronouncer to this day.
He won this bee in 1980.

I just love this movie. I remember watching it when it came out but I appreciate it more now. Keke's performance is so impressive. She was like barely 13
that parallel is important in this movie -- i.e., a little girl who lost her father and a father who lost his daughter, finding one another, helping one another cope with challenges, and becoming family. i'm still not a big fan of many of the racial stereotypes portrayed in this movie, but it's still a very good film!

You NEED to react to Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. It’s a musical film which is like so beautifully strange and different than a lot of other movies. But definitely a heartbreaker, very sad but so worth the watch! ♥️
