  • In preparation for The Genesis Show doing the 1976 tour, I now have a digital hardware “clonewheel”. Here I talk about editing the parameters to make it behave like Tony Banks’s spinet Hammonds.

    I can just hear you playing that last chord in Dancing with the Moonlit Night before the mellow ending, this organ sounds like it will be sweet for that type of sound in that era. Great choice. At 40+ pounds you will also grown your tendons.

    I admite your research on genesis keyboards. I was never a big fan of them, but the whole thing about shared Leslie between the Mellotron and Hammond reminded me of how Rick Wright of Pink Floyd had his minimoogs, farfisas,and Hammonds all running through the Leslie which caused “contamination” of the sound. Very cool to see you stressing over specifics about organ models too as I try to replicate m102 tones on VB3 😅😅😂
    Anyways I enjoy your channel, keep up the good work! I like how you guys are focusing on the live sound of genesis, something I wished PF tribute bands did

      Since my band came together with the idea of using the live albums and concert films as our guides, it made sense. Now we exclusively stay on one tour for our shows because all the rigs changed each tour.
      With Floyd, the general public really didn’t have and definitive live documents except Pompeii and Delicate Sound of Thunder/Pulse - so I could see being stuck doing studio versions. I’d love to play in a Floyd band!

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 yeah and I think genesis fans are a bit more dedicated too, most of the ones I met are giant fans. With Floyd fans the only live show they have in mind is PULSE which is what all of those tribute bands replicate. Nobody would care to notice people replicating the 1975 tour lmao.

    Hi Matt, another great video as always! I was just thinking, does the Pro DGX fit on top of the Crumar comfortably? I've never seen one in person but it looks like there isn't a ton of space. It also looks like with all the controls on top, that reaching the Pro DGX keyboard is also a stretch, though it probably isn't as much as your real B3 in your performance videos. I don't think my arms would be long enough, haha!

      I don’t think it will, but I’m hoping the front feet of the ARP can go on the Mojo with something behind it. Hopefully a simple stand. I’ll be putting the Mellotron Mini on TOP of the RMI since that has the original legs.

    Pretty sure that the Classic is based on a mix between ver II and III just like the Mojo61 where they took some of the enhancement they were working on when creaing the ver III software version and implemented it in the M61. The Mojo61 is based on some Odroid Arm hardware contrary to the old Mojo that was based on a standard X86 board running Win XP. I would asume that the are using Arm on all the newer boards after the Mojo61 was introduced as they are considerably cheaper than a standard X86 M-ITX board with a licenced Windows instead of a cheap Arm board running Linux

      I’ve never researched the previous Crumar models, that info is appreciated.

    The T series plays percussion legato by factory. But it retriggers every already pressed key.
    The L series percussion acted like a B3, except you could have the 2 percussion sounds at the same time.

      Wow, that’s interesting! That explains a lot of what I was hearing. Thanks.

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Some stuff I've stumbled onto with my Crumar -
      The Paradise Perc mod in the Crumar settings app will allow percussion trigger with legato notes and/or notes added over sustained notes. It works while percussion is ON, and therefore only on the upper manual. It also follows the usual format of "no percussion with presets".
      Adding a little bit of the 2-2/3 stop will also do a pretty close simulation of percussion. This means means you can "add percussion" to either the upper or lower manual, and to presets, via that 5th drawbar.
      Both will cause the sound of the percussion (or it's drawbar simulation) to remain "always on" and not drop out, ie there's no "fast/slow" component.
      I sometimes find myself angry at the settings app. It cuts into my practice time..🙂

      @@DrLumpyyes, I was messing with that Paradise mod, too. It’s interesting in that it sustains while bypassing the chorus/vibrato, kinda cool. I do need it to decay for these Genesis gigs, so I ended up disabling it. I would love an OS update allowing legato percussion and more foldback options.

      @@DrLumpy The VB3 engine is propably the closest emu towards the B3 and some of the variants. I once asked why i the year 2000 they didn’t added eg. 64 user presets and got the answer that if it wasn’t in the B3 it werent in the VB3. I’m glad for those that have baught the newer Mojo Desktop versions they have gotten smarter and added User presets. Those effects like the Paradise Mod also was possible back in the old days. You can also take the lower foldback off so you get full range down in the cellar on the 16 foot. The Mojo also lowers the volume on the lower keyboard as an original B3 when you trigger the same notes on both keyboards. There is really much focus on every tiny quirck in the organs in the VB3 software. They eve added the effect that often happened when you placed the leslie right beside the organ there is a form of feedback that happens propably from the speaker magnets that gets picked up by the tonewheels. It was added to the drive circuit and it actually med the drive sound much better the more you turned it up on the Mojo61. It was one of the things they added to the M61 from the v3 software. I really wish they will bring out a multicontact emulation that is controlled via velocity like Hammonds variant

    How about the upper foldback? On the higher drawbars the console organs start repeating octaves for the higher keys, but the spinets don't. Those the crumar reproduce this faithfuly?
    If so.. I need to get one!! I don't know of any hardware clonewheel that does this correctly for spinet Hammond sounds.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ll check it but I don’t think so. They specifically refer to foldback only on the 16’ for the lowest 12 tonewheels.

    • @MrGrigius
      @MrGrigius 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For what I know the only hardware clone able to reproduce a convincing spinet sound is keyboard partner hx3.5 or 3.6. It can turn off both low and high foldback, you can load original T or L tapering if you find them on the internet, you can change also wire resistances, and you can recreate all T six percussions

      The only foldback option on the Mojo Classic is the 16’ drawbar at the lowest octave, unfortunately.
