      Just bought this set the other day from Home Depot...unfortunately it seems Gear Wrench has cut cost on this set significantly not even close the quality as the set in the video...generic sockets that look like they could be from HF budget line, muddy knurling and engraving, cheap and flimsy storage case, doesn't even come with the cardboard inserts anymore lol...gonna be returning it...everything is made in Vietnam and mainland China, guessing the old version was made in Taiwan,...just a heads up anyone considering this kit.

    Pro tip: Place a strip of tape on the rear of the door and B-Pilar to protect the paint from the wedge and rod. Those edges can get damaged some times.

    I own this exact Gearwrench set that I purchased after watching your side-by-side video with the Craftsman set. Like you, I think it’s one of the most comprehensive sets on the market, even with the filler bits. I felt for the price I paid, I really got my money’s worth and the tools have all held up great. The 84 tooth ratchets are among my favorites along with the similar Duralast 72T ratchets. Always look forward to Cool Tool Tuesday and seeing what’s on Jeff’s truck. I agree with you about the nut/bit driver. I am both an auto technician/Body technician and general contractor. I rarely use one. One reason is that the hollow part of the shaft can be too large in circumference an will not fit inside some holes. The other thing is, when using them in a door to remove the window regulator/locking mechanism/air bag sensor etc, if the bit falls out and into the bottom of the door, you can be SCREWED and have a rattle, or need to fill the bottom of the door with glue so it will not rattle. I'd much rather have a full set of dedicated drivers in various length shafts. The only way I use the multi bit is when replacing switch and plug plates, since you can have both slotted and cross tipped screws.

    I wanted to let you know this video was the make or break buy for me. I decided to pull the trigger and get this set. I am in aviation, so unfortunately I will only work with SAE, but every company puts out SAE/metric when it comes to a mechanic set. I got this gearwrench 243 pc for 180 on ebay and I cant wait man. Even if I buy 10pc sets of just SAE, to get all the 90+ SAE tools is still wayyyy over the 180 I spent.

    I’m a starter mechanic, so I just went through Home Depot’s site and hand picked some things after talking with many co-workers, friends, and family. After seeing what I liked, I ordered 120xp 3 pc ratchets, then went through and ordered Husky socket sets in their respective drives (1/4,3/8,1/2) and then a 44 pc gear wrench 12 point wrench set. I figured this would be a good blend of quality and cost effectiveness, but now I’m wondering if I should’ve ordered something like this. I did get the higher tooth ratchets, and some larger wrenches I know I won’t be using until I start getting more involved with diesel by doing this. Other than some of the larger sizes Husky skipped, and one or two larger wrench sizes Gearwrench doesn’t even make, Ive almost got a complete set. Finding room in my new 36” Husky box for those large wrenches is a challenge now though. With the new stubby, flex head, and ratcheting wrenches I ordered, I believe I’m going to have to get a small 2 drawer handheld box just for wrenches. Any ideas on wrench storage if your drawers are full? I.e, using the hutch in some way?

    • @MrSpartanicus
      @MrSpartanicus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      James York just out of curiosity, what sizes did gearwrench skip?

    • @jamesyork6023
      @jamesyork6023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrSparticus Metric was 29 mm and 31 mm, and there was one LARGE SAE skipped as well that I can’t remember off the top of my head. I knew I wouldn’t be using them for a while so I didn’t rush out to buy them. When I find a need for those 3 sizes, I’ll either buy off the truck or give Tekton a try!

    • @MrSpartanicus
      @MrSpartanicus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James York well, I also ordered the 44 piece set and just recently I checked gearwrench’s website and found 5 sizes that are made but were skipped by the wrench set. One was the 29mm.SAE skipped 9/32, 1-3/16, 1-3/8, and 1-7/16. Found them all on amazon and completed the set. Some are oddball sizes hardly used but I’d rather have them and not need them then need them and not have them.

  • @Rich32262
    @Rich32262 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can't really judge a set by how many pieces. Some sets give you tons of allen wrenches and other small driver bits. If that's what you need, great. But when you want a good wrench and socket set you have to dig a little. A lot of them give you about 12 wrenches, a few metric a few SAE. Now if you want a have a full set of wrenches you'll have to buy a set and will end up with duplicate sizes, and if you try and buy the missing sizes individually, they're expensive. This package seems has a fairly complete (not talking auto mechinic, average DIY) set of wrenches along with sockets. Thanks for taking the time. Good info.

I trust your opinion over most other TH-camrs because you actually use your tools and give your honest opinion on them good or bad and that's what matters when people are looking for advice. I appreciate everything you do... Some people are just born to be haters and aren't happy unless they are putting other people down to make themselves look better than they really are.

    You're right, I don't think I have ever used a bit adapter for a ratchet on my cars. But in my job working on aircraft, a socket bit adapter is the best, there's hundreds of screws for each panel, a lot tend to be seized and painted, the leverage that those adapters provide is invaluable.

  • @extrememiami

    Replacing a 29 year old craftsman set (best set ever) I narrowed it down to gearwrench, ICON and Milwaukee. Dewalt was in the running but got knocked out as it didn't do well in the project farm review video. So it's now down to 3. Which would you choose? Price is not a factor (I eliminated snap-on already due to that) I'd rather it all be in one case unless 3 seperate draws but it's not a deal breaker. For me weirdly enough having the size large and easy to read is actually one of the top 3 most important factors to me. My eyes aren't that great anymore and my craftsman is so rusty I can't even read it any longer. Set completeness is my second factor (includes deep socket and goes from 5mm to 24mm and up to 1" on standard, and includes sparkplug socket. For some reason there is NOT ONE single manufacturer that has all these factors in 1 set, I'll have to compromise on something for sure. It baffles my mind how the manufacturers don't ask their customers what they want to see in a set. 1 company had 14mm as a skip, not too many include deep sockets and most leave out sparkplug sockets. It's crazy, I'm honestly tempted to work with a manufacturer and produce my own line to my specs because I think it would sell since I'm basically looking for the same exact options that 90% of everyone else wants in a set too.

    My co worker uses lots of gearwrench and I don't like there long hex bit sockets at all but there are very usable tools. Gearwrench makes some top tier tools for there price point, and are a great alternative to tool trucks. I will not but the modern craftsman line at all, they need to take a step back and fix that brand to what it once was.

    The Pittsburg 301 piece kit doesn’t have a lot of gimicky things in it your thinking of the other kit that is more of a home owner kit, but the 301 is a great kit we used to supply our new techs with it because it has just about everything socked/bit wise they would need including e-torx, the watchers are ok(can definitely be upgraded) but we could set a new tech up with that a cart, and a select couple tools and have them set for just about everything they would be doing for their first year or so. The Vessel drivers are very good. I have a bunch of them. They invented several Japanese screwdriver standards. The only annoying thing about the Gearwrench reversible ratchet wrenches is that while the inch size has that lip on the socket so the nut doesn’t pop out the back. But the metric set doesn’t have that. I don’t know if they have a metric set that does, but I was disappointed. Also,the inch set has adapters that fit into the sockets. The metric set doesn’t, or at least I can’t find it.

    I recently picked up the Gearwrench 1/4 and 3/8 socket sets and I added their intermediate length sockets with them. I got pretty good deals on them. I think HD has a deal on them currently.
    As far as using, yeah they seem great so far. One of the reasons I got them was to get their 120xp ratchets that they came with. They give you a good deal if you buy the complete set vs buying just a set of deep sockets and a ratchet. Gearwrench and Tekton are two of my favs now. Also just to mention - the Gearwrench XL ratchet wrenches are great too. Love the longer sizes.

They are nice as for price for durability gearwrench is extremely well. I use them as a professional everyday. I do some road calls and been meaning to make a designated go bag strictly for the go. Some times I'll grab stuff for get what I grabbed and its easy to leave or loose tools. Something like this kit would work wonders and seriously thinking of buying. Hows it been holding up?

      for the 3/8 drive socket allen's they start at 2mm, 2.5mm, all the way up to 10mm. for the 3/8 drive sockets for SAE this set covers 5/32 up to 3/8 no skips. as for the palm driver the allen's bits covers 1/8-5/16 and 4mm-8mm no skips.

    What does Deuces mean? I've been watching your stuff for a while, and I still don't know. As for Gearwrench, I have a smattering in my box, including some ratchets. Overall I've been very happy with them. But I really like the 3/8 flex ratchet.

    Dear Justin, I personally bought gearwrench mid-size sockets for 1/4,3/8 and I have the standard deep and shallow only in 1/2. and I'm looking for another complete set for standard and deep sockets in 1/4, 3/8 so would you recommend craftsman or gearwrench I saw both videos of your comparison and just would like a more deciding factor on if you had to do it again which one would you get?

    Great Review, I love Gear Wrench, now saw it carrying it at Home Depot, not so long ago i bought Husky Master Mechanic set that comes with an impressive 1021 pieces, comparing that to the now offered Gear Wrench Master Mechanic Tool Set with half piece quantity for even more expensive price, would love to see a video comparison between the two. I favor Gear Wrench over Husky but the Master Mechanic Set of 500+ pieces if I recall well was not available when I bought it. Husky comes with tools I will never use at all, humongous wrenches and such but I do think is is a little more completed, full screw driver set and all sorts of impact sockets. Gear wrench is nice to collect their various sets individually but this would be crazy expensive, i know people who do it because they swear by it just like you said you have never had an issue; my dad introduced me to Gear Wrench back in 1997 but Husky have been around since 1924 and in performance tests it comes on top of Gear Wrench, still i do like GW better. When I decided to shell out 2k for the Husky set I have been with a basic Craftman mechanic tool chest for years without any issues or complaints that i got at Sears for $100.00!

Haven’t had a single issue with any of the GearWrench products I own. Great company, easy to deal with there warranty systems as well. Call me a fan boy, but I back them up fully!

    I just got my first Wera zyklop speed ratchet its nice but damn is it expensive. Looks like this set is running around 300$ I wouldn't have half that for 300$ from Wera. But I would tell anyone to look at a set of hex plus L keys they are a big step up from any other manufacturer.

  • @MarkK01

    Yes I am writing this comment at the beginning of this video. I love my GearWrench tools but my complaint has always been that they come all scratched up. Even in this case Justin's new socket set are all scratched up. What the hell is Gearwrench doing with these tools before they go into packaging. Nothing like spending $100.00 on a new ratchet and it looks like it has been used for 20 years. And yes I am from Canada so $100.00 for a ratchet is not out of the question.
