Claire does not need that. Hats off to Claire for attempting to push on through, even with all the undermining opposition that only served to prop up Caris's ego. I mean literally punch each other sometimes lol Then I say "I told you so" when the opportunity comes up (because it almost always does.) I think they should have used their money from their regular jobs, plus the farmer's market, but expanded to make it an all weekend every weekend kinda thing. And why did she give that 500 pounds (sorry finding the British money symbol on my kb seems like more aggravation than it's worth :P) to charity? People don't usually give their money away when they're truly interested in using it to fix the roof. And she could have. Some of her own money from a hospital admin's salary (over here they make upwards of $150k, btw) plus that 500 could have fixed the leak in one or 2 of the worst rooms.We could assume 4000 or more every month based on that. Then they could get a horse or 2 and offer riding lessons at the same time, and keep the tea room running. After about 6 months they would have had a nice little chunk of money saved up for reno. And what about historical home salvation grants from the government? They could have got some of those. But I get the impression that the missing generation (the heirs) were just waiting for the old lady to die so they could get their money fast and retire. I mean who makes 500 pounds and then just gives it to charity? Not somebody who thinks that making enough money to fix a house is actually possible, or worth it. That's for durn sure. I'm glad the grandchildren at least had good jobs.
Wonderful house and gardens. Whoever ends up owning it are very fortunate. To think Carris paid 12,000 pounds for the house,cottages and 140 acres only 40 years ago it mind boggling.
What amazes me about this show is all the folks who have what others could only dream of having or inheriting just take it for granted. How could they possibly live in such huge estates and not realize the amount of work and money they require? Just blows my mind. In most episodes family members are working outside of the estate and seam to treat the estate like it's a regular 3bdrm residential home. It's so weird how disconnected many of them are from what they have.
I think the enormous task and money to restore it took its toll on her plans. Plus, now there were four involved in decisions of how it was to be run and divided up. I think it was finally sold for about a million pounds. So they all came out with a good profit, but will never own an estate like that again.

Such an absolutely beautiful house! The grandmother was horrible. She didn't take care of the house then deserted it and somehow thought that it was going to be repaired with no concrete idea of with what money or by whom. If it's been left up to her, the house would have just fallen completely to ruin. She put so much effort into the garden and no effort into the house. Pathetic.
If it makes you feel better the entire house was restored and run as a business it was put for sale in 2018 for just over a million pounds and will likely stand for another century.
I think it was Claire’s siblings who failed her. Her grandmother is the way she is and there was no changing her. It was her property and she could do what she wanted with it. I assume the siblings were living there for free and didn’t express any affection for the house at all. The brother made the excuse that he and the other sister worked full-time, but you still have evenings and weekends to help out. If the three had gotten together and wanted to do the B&B, I think they could’ve swayed grandmother, but they obviously didn’t want to.
Well ive got the same situation around the corner in my family - distant cousin sisters live in their mothers grand house for free and do absolutely nothing despite being almost 50. They just wait for their mother to die so they can sell the amazing old house with english garden and stop working their low paying jobs. They dont want to work, they cant appreciate the house or the garden. They want their TV and vacations. An absolute disgrace to the family. Their old mother would never kick them out though because they are still her babys... :(

This is my favorite estate on this show so far and would have loved to visit. I just looked it up and it was refurbished in 2010 and ran as a holiday home until 2018. It was however listed for sale in August of 2018 for £1,095,000
Nice speech from Ruth to the family at the end. Overall, I found this quite a depressing episode. The family had so many opportunities yet rapidly lost any motivation to advance. Caris I liked but could not understand her lack of desire to protect the family home/business/investment.
Stunning landscape, artists, art students and photographers could have been a good market for them if the guest house proved to much. I think the grandmother was rather calculative and probably made up her mind to sell but had not yet divulged this decision to the grandchildren. Ruth was excellent. I was hoping she would offer to inject cash flow and probably be repaid, this is exactly how she made millions. The family was not very truthful with Ruth. Claire looked defeated and dilapidated from the get go.
Sold off in 2019 this property. I guess the grand kids had to wait for their grand mother to pass away before selling on to a family who could financially support it. (37minutes into this video is quite interesting where Ruth nails the problem ! )
Why not board horses and have a horse vet in the tack room ??? Volunteers would help with the horses and srudents could come apprenice under the Vet, or horticulture students pay to come stay there and learn from the Gramma.
I wonder how all these families living on these big estates are all the same especially the ones which are failing. They all want to stick their heads in the sand other than one person. They neither want to do anything nor help/support the one who does want to do something. The house is so beautiful and they would rather allow it to wither away.
This house touched me so much. I wished Claire had more support with someone who wants to built a future together. Siblings in this age go different ways in life. Grandma has a chracter but maybe she feels that Claire alone is not able to do all the demands.
Lovely family and a fantastic house. Although I had a bad feeling in my gut after 5-10 minutes into the episode. It didn't feel like Ruth and the family had very good personal chemistry and ideals. A depressing situation if any, under the circumstances. I loved Ruth's monologue at the end. I think production had lots to do with that because they knew they couldn't air the episode without weighing up for all the depressing interactions they'd filmed up to the day of the 9-month revisit. I felt bad for the family. They just didn't get off on the right foot with Ruth. Glad to see production convinced, or at the very least helped, Ruth to make amends. Update on the House: I think I saw an article about the house being up for sale, don't know if it sold. Renovations seemed to have been completed and very well done, looked brilliant. If you know what happened, if they released the whole estate or just sold the main house, or whatever, I'd love to know more.
At the end of the video, the family stated quite clearly they are not interested in running a B&B: two of them have full-time jobs and not an iota of interest. This is a weird video: there was no interest and suddenly there is money to renovate. Or was the reno done to get it ready for sale? Caris is a fox: she doesn’t know the cost of things? Right.
I agree with your view. However, although a fox in some peoples eyes, Cari was clearly from an upper/upper middle class background. Although I grew up in the 90's-00's I had a similar upbringing and I can relate to her values, thus I understand those traits in her personality. In such an upbringing with traditional values of those kinds, one thing is for certain: you do not talk about money and making capitalistic decisions and talking about them with outsiders is not something you do. It's very frowned upon. Talking about politics and money in social situations is seen as very uncivilized. Two of the most hush-hush topics, if any.
I watch this program to see the beautiful Estates. But the people are frequently bereft of character. Which probably explains why the houses are in such Jeopardy. As an American, I would love to pass on the grandparents family home to one of the grandchildren one day. It's not an estate, but has decent sized country land, it's in a great location and it's got a good build. This grandmother not choosing to pass it on down to her granddaughter is just the height of selfishness and foolishness. A decision I'm sure she regrets in the afterlife
I just want to remind you of reality: inheritance tax, inheritance laws, it was an estate (a property). Seems like we don't live in the same reality where inheritance, in the form of capital or investments, that has more than one recipient will almost always be divided up, if everything is as it should within the family. To pick one to enherit ~2 million dollars out of 5-10 people, there's going to be horrible consequences within the family, the peace will be at jeopardy, to say the very least.
Plenty of info on the Abbey Dore Court estate since this was filmed including its own Wikipedia page. A 2018 property listing shows all the renovated rooms which look great. However, it appears they sold the home to a private owner in 2018.
The music on this episode was like a mashup of Edward Scissorhands, Harry Potter, and Tetris. Caris seemed to be using magical thinking, so I guess the first two would apply.
Ruth had great ideas as a successful businesswoman herself… it was the old lady who never was going to let the young people take over the house the old woman called her home…. No it was never ever going to happen. And it did not instead it was sold off in 2019.
It was brilliantly renovated, finished in 2010. Ran as a let house for 8-9 years before being sold to a private family in 2019, whom has since kept it as a private family home. A bit of a depressing of an episode for my taste but it can't all be perfect, personalities differ and views seem to differ a lot in this episode.
Most frustrating family I’ve ever seen… hope and suppose doesn’t get things done. The matriarch has done ZERO to help her family or the property survive.

Caris would have had to step up, take charge and give one person the majority of her funds and risk upsetting others by not choosing them. The way she just chose to be oblivious about the state of the house, the costs, the competition etc. she clearly did not want to actually make that decision. She also didn't want to "upset" the neighbours by opening a B&B, how was she going to choose one to inherit? The family would have lost the house anyway. After Caris' passing, they wouldn't have been able to afford to pay the inheritance tax and the property would have been divided among many people. No way at that point any of them would have just chose to give their share away and help pay for the renovations to keep the house in the family.

You see this a lot, people of all types of home ownership have no Idea of maintenance, and maintenance schedules etc. weather it is a big manor home or some $35K home in a small town. For that matter people don’t take care of their cars either. The thing is this, if one thing goes wrong you need to fix it straight up regardless, of you don’t you soon fall behind instead of one thing to fi. Then you have 10 things etc, and after a while it’s almost depressing how many things need attention

What a bargain! I inherited a 60s apartment 85 square metres on the fifth floor of an apartment building downtown Athens and it costs one hundred and fifty thousands euros at present, real estate is crazy here. Recently l sold a 22 square metres ground floor studio at the same building for twenty one thousands euros. These people are so lucky and they don't even realize it. Old lady doesn't care about the mansion at all, she looks so indifferent about its future. She would probably be dead by now and property sold cause she didn't provide solutions for the heavy taxation duties for her grandchildren, do we have an update?
The things, the grandmother is in her 80s … her future is limited and she knows it. If as other commenters are saying, it was sold for a million pounds, she showed foresight. I doubt very much the mansion could be restored for only 150 pounds … probably, much, much more. And it takes more that’s just wishing and hoping to run a hospitality facility. Claire may have passion but you really need experience to run a well-functioning B&B or guesthouse.
She bought it at that price in 1974. Still cheap though! Price in 2022 would probably be between 1.2 to 1.5 million depending on the state. The family sold it in 2019. This episode has the weirdest old lady of the whole series. She seems to take a positive delight in relentlessly frustrating everyone around her as much as she possibly can.

And she does try to deflect the conversation by saying "I don't know", several times, which is exactly what you should do. Although I'd wish for her to be a bit more optimistic, I think she faired quite well.
This family is only going to proceed once Charis goes off to her eternal rest. I've sort of stopped watching these just because of people like Paris it's horrible I don't know how Ruth deals with them. Then this woman cuts it off from every direction and has destroyed the family's chances of having this house because of her negative attitude

This house was once nice but lets face it, its a dump now. The estate has potential though but Grandma is part of the problem I think. The family isn't listining to the experts and the family think they know what do but I don't have confidence in them yet.
I was so surprised that the Old Vicarage was only charging £100 per night! I checked their website and they are now only charging £80 per night! Atleast they survived Covid, but they didn't seem to care about keeping track of costs when they restored their B n B. I doubt they have calculated what they are bringing in now vs 2018. I can't imagine they can survive off the revenue from only 3 rooms a year. Especially when one includes breakfast. And a full English at that!

A very sad ambiance indeed. On the grandchildren and the matriarchal figure: She is indeed thinking of what she will leave behind after she passes, how she leaves it and to whom. She has atleast five recipients of her inheritance, there are taxes on capital/investment inheritance, heavy ones. She really had no choice but to try and help push for renovations, nothing more or less than that. She knew well enough this property would most likely be sold and divided up between the people i her will once she had passed on. That's why she pushed back on the bnb-plans. She didn't want to spend her last days living with other people than her family on the estate and she knew that Abbey Dore Court would be divided up and most likely would have to be sold.

Grandma not too smart. Many women of her generation were uneducated and low functioning. Really was rooting for the grandkids but the property was sold in 2018 and is now permanently closed. What went wrong.
On the contrary: she's a real fox, she knew the inheritance laws and the tax burden that would befall the recipients of her last will and testament. If her children or grandchildren would have been capital rich, there would be no problem in leaving the house to one of all her children/grandchildren. But she knew the property would most likely have to be sold off because none of them had the means to pay out all the other recipients and take over the house. She didn't want to spend her last days with outsiders (as in strangers living on her property) and therefore she pushed back, effectively, on any plans of a bnb. It was, after all, her own estate and her own life. May she rest in peace.

both of the large formal sitting rooms would make beautiful formal dining rooms wouldn't they? A commercial kitchen wouldn't be cheap but would contribute income and time toward eventual development of suitable bedroom suites and further development of the property as a whole. In the meantime establishing an exceptional if not unique venue for the area. If the owners aren't keen on placing their property in the same market as local single family home b&b's perhaps they have a point?

She didn't take care of the house then deserted it and somehow thought that it was going to be repaired with no concrete idea of with what money or by whom. If it's been left up to her, the house would have just fallen completely to ruin. She put so much effort into the garden and no effort into the house. Pathetic.

I think it was Claire’s siblings who failed her. Her grandmother is the way she is and there was no changing her. It was her property and she could do what she wanted with it. I assume the siblings were living there for free and didn’t express any affection for the house at all. The brother made the excuse that he and the other sister worked full-time, but you still have evenings and weekends to help out. If the three had gotten together and wanted to do the B&B, I think they could’ve swayed grandmother, but they obviously didn’t want to.
Well ive got the same situation around the corner in my family - distant cousin sisters live in their mothers grand house for free and do absolutely nothing despite being almost 50. They just wait for their mother to die so they can sell the amazing old house with english garden and stop working their low paying jobs. They dont want to work, they cant appreciate the house or the garden. They want their TV and vacations. An absolute disgrace to the family. Their old mother would never kick them out though because they are still her babys... :(

Ruth failed to address the most consequential question, "Who will inherit Abbey Dore Court?" Where were the parents? Will Clare get the full estate because she is doing the work? Or will the other two get an equal share without doing the work? If I were Clare, I would get this in writing pronto!!

This is my favorite estate on this show so far and would have loved to visit. I just looked it up and it was refurbished in 2010 and ran as a holiday home until 2018. It was however listed for sale in August of 2018 for £1,095,000

Nice speech from Ruth to the family at the end. Overall, I found this quite a depressing episode. The family had so many opportunities yet rapidly lost any motivation to advance. Caris I liked but could not understand her lack of desire to protect the family home/business/investment.
Caris made herself to appear likeable but I think she's a negative person. Her wake is of destruction is palpable.

Stunning landscape, artists, art students and photographers could have been a good market for them if the guest house proved to much. I think the grandmother was rather calculative and probably made up her mind to sell but had not yet divulged this decision to the grandchildren. Ruth was excellent. I was hoping she would offer to inject cash flow and probably be repaid, this is exactly how she made millions. The family was not very truthful with Ruth. Claire looked defeated and dilapidated from the get go.
Such nice grandchildren, they all want to place their grandma… this is love ❤️ hopefully all will work out as their hearts are in the right place 🙏🏻
Sold off in 2019 this property. I guess the grand kids had to wait for their grand mother to pass away before selling on to a family who could financially support it. (37minutes into this video is quite interesting where Ruth nails the problem ! )

This house touched me so much. I wished Claire had more support with someone who wants to built a future together.
Siblings in this age go different ways in life. Grandma has a chracter but maybe she feels that Claire alone is not able to do all the demands.
Lovely family and a fantastic house. Although I had a bad feeling in my gut after 5-10 minutes into the episode. It didn't feel like Ruth and the family had very good personal chemistry and ideals. A depressing situation if any, under the circumstances. I loved Ruth's monologue at the end. I think production had lots to do with that because they knew they couldn't air the episode without weighing up for all the depressing interactions they'd filmed up to the day of the 9-month revisit. I felt bad for the family. They just didn't get off on the right foot with Ruth. Glad to see production convinced, or at the very least helped, Ruth to make amends.
Update on the House: I think I saw an article about the house being up for sale, don't know if it sold. Renovations seemed to have been completed and very well done, looked brilliant. If you know what happened, if they released the whole estate or just sold the main house, or whatever, I'd love to know more.
At the end of the video, the family stated quite clearly they are not interested in running a B&B: two of them have full-time jobs and not an iota of interest. This is a weird video: there was no interest and suddenly there is money to renovate. Or was the reno done to get it ready for sale? Caris is a fox: she doesn’t know the cost of things? Right.
I agree with your view. However, although a fox in some peoples eyes, Cari was clearly from an upper/upper middle class background. Although I grew up in the 90's-00's I had a similar upbringing and I can relate to her values, thus I understand those traits in her personality. In such an upbringing with traditional values of those kinds, one thing is for certain: you do not talk about money and making capitalistic decisions and talking about them with outsiders is not something you do. It's very frowned upon. Talking about politics and money in social situations is seen as very uncivilized. Two of the most hush-hush topics, if any.
I watch this program to see the beautiful Estates. But the people are frequently bereft of character. Which probably explains why the houses are in such Jeopardy. As an American, I would love to pass on the grandparents family home to one of the grandchildren one day. It's not an estate, but has decent sized country land, it's in a great location and it's got a good build. This grandmother not choosing to pass it on down to her granddaughter is just the height of selfishness and foolishness. A decision I'm sure she regrets in the afterlife
I just want to remind you of reality: inheritance tax, inheritance laws, it was an estate (a property). Seems like we don't live in the same reality where inheritance, in the form of capital or investments, that has more than one recipient will almost always be divided up, if everything is as it should within the family. To pick one to enherit ~2 million dollars out of 5-10 people, there's going to be horrible consequences within the family, the peace will be at jeopardy, to say the very least.
Plenty of info on the Abbey Dore Court estate since this was filmed including its own Wikipedia page. A 2018 property listing shows all the renovated rooms which look great. However, it appears they sold the home to a private owner in 2018.
The music on this episode was like a mashup of Edward Scissorhands, Harry Potter, and Tetris. Caris seemed to be using magical thinking, so I guess the first two would apply.

It was brilliantly renovated, finished in 2010. Ran as a let house for 8-9 years before being sold to a private family in 2019, whom has since kept it as a private family home. A bit of a depressing of an episode for my taste but it can't all be perfect, personalities differ and views seem to differ a lot in this episode.

Just looked up current state. The home was fully renovated and opened as an Inn up to 2018 in which it was sold and is now a private residence.
Most frustrating family I’ve ever seen… hope and suppose doesn’t get things done. The matriarch has done ZERO to help her family or the property survive.
I'd say the grandmother was the frustration point of it all but she definitely helped. She bought the house and owned the estate, I'd say she was crucial. She's a matriarch, and a bit of pessimist, sure. The grandchildren seemed to carry an initially great point of view but the matriarch put a quiet stop to the dreams - because she probably didn't want the house to be lived in by other people than her own family. She helped, there's no doubt about that, but she didn't share the same views or goals as Ruth or the grandchildren.

Caris would have had to step up, take charge and give one person the majority of her funds and risk upsetting others by not choosing them. The way she just chose to be oblivious about the state of the house, the costs, the competition etc. she clearly did not want to actually make that decision. She also didn't want to "upset" the neighbours by opening a B&B, how was she going to choose one to inherit?

You see this a lot, people of all types of home ownership have no Idea of maintenance, and maintenance schedules etc. weather it is a big manor home or some $35K home in a small town. For that matter people don’t take care of their cars either.
The thing is this, if one thing goes wrong you need to fix it straight up regardless, of you don’t you soon fall behind instead of one thing to fi. Then you have 10 things etc, and after a while it’s almost depressing how many things need attention
Twelve thousands pounds for this stunning property, the mansion, gardens, cottage and surrounding buildings even back in the 90s??? At first l thought that l missed something or overhead. What a bargain! I inherited a 60s apartment 85 square metres on the fifth floor of an apartment building downtown Athens and it costs one hundred and fifty thousands euros at present, real estate is crazy here. Recently l sold a 22 square metres ground floor studio at the same building for twenty one thousands euros. These people are so lucky and they don't even realize it. Old lady doesn't care about the mansion at all, she looks so indifferent about its future. She would probably be dead by now and property sold cause she didn't provide solutions for the heavy taxation duties for her grandchildren, do we have an update?
The things, the grandmother is in her 80s … her future is limited and she knows it. If as other commenters are saying, it was sold for a million pounds, she showed foresight. I doubt very much the mansion could be restored for only 150 pounds … probably, much, much more. And it takes more that’s just wishing and hoping to run a hospitality facility. Claire may have passion but you really need experience to run a well-functioning B&B or guesthouse.

Upbringing and traditional upper-class-related values. You do not talk about money or politics in social situations. She is clearly all there in the brains department, ofcourse she knows what the renovations cost. She doesn't want to disclose it. And she does try to deflect the conversation by saying "I don't know", several times, which is exactly what you should do. Ruth didn't want to have anything to do with this, so she kept on pushing, the grandma stayed fixed. It's nothing out of the ordinary, I agree with the grandmother on that subject. Although I'd wish for her to be a bit more optimistic, I think she faired quite well.
This family is only going to proceed once Charis goes off to her eternal rest. I've sort of stopped watching these just because of people like Paris it's horrible I don't know how Ruth deals with them. Then this woman cuts it off from every direction and has destroyed the family's chances of having this house because of her negative attitude

This house was once nice but lets face it, its a dump now. The estate has potential though but Grandma is part of the problem I think. The family isn't listining to the experts and the family think they know what do but I don't have confidence in them yet.
I was so surprised that the Old Vicarage was only charging £100 per night! I checked their website and they are now only charging £80 per night! Atleast they survived Covid, but they didn't seem to care about keeping track of costs when they restored their B n B. I doubt they have calculated what they are bringing in now vs 2018. I can't imagine they can survive off the revenue from only 3 rooms a year. Especially when one includes breakfast. And a full English at that!

That was a sad episode. The grandmother obviously has no confidence in the grandchildren and is holding them back. She wont be around for long but they will and she should be thinking in term of their future, which she is not.
A very sad ambiance indeed. On the grandchildren and the matriarchal figure: She is indeed thinking of what she will leave behind after she passes, how she leaves it and to whom. She has atleast five recipients of her inheritance, there are taxes on capital/investment inheritance, heavy ones. She really had no choice but to try and help push for renovations, nothing more or less than that. She knew well enough this property would most likely be sold and divided up between the people i her will once she had passed on. That's why she pushed back on the bnb-plans. She didn't want to spend her last days living with other people than her family on the estate and she knew that Abbey Dore Court would be divided up and most likely would have to be sold.

Grandma not too smart. Many women of her generation were uneducated and low functioning. Really was rooting for the grandkids but the property was sold in 2018 and is now permanently closed. What went wrong.
On the contrary: she's a real fox, she knew the inheritance laws and the tax burden that would befall the recipients of her last will and testament. If her children or grandchildren would have been capital rich, there would be no problem in leaving the house to one of all her children/grandchildren. But she knew the property would most likely have to be sold off because none of them had the means to pay out all the other recipients and take over the house. She didn't want to spend her last days with outsiders (as in strangers living on her property) and therefore she pushed back, effectively, on any plans of a bnb. It was, after all, her own estate and her own life. May she rest in peace.
I add. We don't know! The history between grandmother and grandchildren. Maybe with good reason she didn't have any confidenceI in Claire. And perhaps the other two as well that didn't have very much to say. Hope that it works out for the family they can save this beautiful home and all three children make a living off of it and for their children as well.

A commercial kitchen wouldn't be cheap but would contribute income and time toward eventual development of suitable bedroom suites and further development of the property as a whole. If the owners aren't keen on placing their property in the same market as local single family home b&b's perhaps they have a point?
