Love the way you two talk about all these songs, makes me love them even more.
I feel the same when it comes to comparing the two decades. "Objectively" as well as in my personal ranking the 60s are better, but I often feel more drawn towards the kinda more colorful nature of his 70s work.
Here's my list; I have 10 in common with Dylan and 9 with Joe:
    1. Tangled Up in Blue
    2. Changing of the Guards
    3. Simple Twist of Fate
    4. Shelter from the Storm
    5. Going, Going, Gone
    6. Is Your Love in Vain?
    7. I Believe in You
    8. If You See Her, Say Hello
    9. Gotta Serve Somebody
    10. Day of the Locusts
    11. Forever Young
    12. If Not for You
    13. You're a Big Girl Now
    14. Went to See the Gypsy
    15. Slow Train
    16. Idiot Wind
    17. Isis
    18. Precious Angel
    19. You Angel You
    20. Senor

As both of you were going down your lists, I now realize what a Treasure Bob Dylan was to the 70s beyond Blood and Desire. I also enjoyed Dylan's lack of commitment to multiple song versions so he included both versions and perhaps rightfully so. Thanks for reminiscing the 70s through these lists as i now have something to go back and re-listen to with your comments in mind..

I'm impressed how well you guys explain your picks. A reflection of how much you know about music and how well you known Dylan. As you know, you can't listem to all these great songs and agree on an order or even what to include

Brilliant lists from both of you. Both of you captured Dylan of the 70's. I know the anthems came from the 60's but this is my favorite decade.
Really appreciate the shout out to "Buckets of Rain". I think this is one of Bob's greatest strength, writing about love while in the midst of losing the love or searching for love. How hard it is to find love in the present. If I would add one song to your lists it would be "If You See Her Say Hello". This along with "Most of the Time" from Oh Mercy rip your heart out. I had this and now it's gone and I'm trying to move on or rationalizing moving on. This is Bob bearing his soul in ways he rarely does.
Anyway, this episode is the perfect conclusion to a decade where Dylan became an icon to me. Saw him live several times, and thoroughly consumed each new release.
Fantastic episode. It appears that Joe is a slow train coming in his appreciation. Love it.

Really liked both of your lists and honestly any of the songs you mentioned could easily have made my list! Glad that both of you gave a shout out to Tonight I’m Staying Here With You from Rolling Thunder. 3. One More Cup of Coffee
    4. You’re A Big Girl Now (Hard Rain version, live 1976)

Most if not all of Blood on the Tracks. If Not For You, Tough Mama, One More Cup of Coffee, Hurricane. Rolling Thunder Revue material a bit shambolic but so wonderful. I'm partial to his 60's but love to see enthusiasm for 70's and now I've finally heard all of it, thanks. Now, about that first album of 80's!

Great picks and nice commentary.. I especially like the choices of “Copper Kettle”, and “Where Are You Tonight (Journey Through Dark Heat). Some tracks not mentioned, that are personal favorites of mine are, “Alberta” from “Self Portrait”, “Dirge” from “Planet Waves”, “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” from “Blood On The Tracks”. “Mozambique” from “Desire” (catchy, infectious tune), and although I don’t like it’s divisive theme, I think “Gotta Serve Somebody” from “Slow Train Coming”, has a groove about it that’s undeniable imo. Great job guys!

Great series! Clearly Joe has come a long way in his Bob appreciation, so Mr. Sevey has done a great job there. Both lists are very strong. Bob in the Seventies is probably my favourite of his periods, other than (incredibly) the late-90’s /2000’s! What an exemplary artist! My list:
    1) Sign on the Window--clever, insightful, master songwriting
    2) Tangled Up in Blue-brilliant lyrics, great story, wonderful changes in perspective
    3) Abandoned Love (from Biography, outtake from Desire era)-love this song, terrific lyrics, great Scarlet violin
    4) One More Cup of Coffee-full gypsy mode, mysterious and dark
    5) Changing of the Guard-great full-on band performance, unique in the canon
    6) I Believe in You-a true believer, passionate delivery, great Bob piano
    7) Buckets of Rain-great guitar, simple but straightforward lyrics, beautifully sung
    8) Idiot Wind (live Hard Rain version)-proto-punk, seething energy, he means it!
    9) Copper Kettle (Another Self Portrait version)-take off the excess muck, cuts to the core
    10) Up to Me (Biography, Blood on the Tracks out-take)-fabulous, clever song, a favourite of postal clerks
    11) Going, going, gone--my favourite from Planet Waves, just a great early hours in the morning song
    12) Meet Me in the Morning--Dylan proves his mastery of the blues form; a secret pleasure on Blood
    13) Watching the River Flow-great clever little rocker
    14) New Morning-just a beautiful, hopeful song
    15) Shelter from the Storm-master class song writing, such a joy
    16) Black Diamond Bay--another Dylan twist in perspective, just a great, barrelling song
    17) Isis (live version, from Live 1975)--Dylan at his most energetic and, yes, playful
    18) When I Paint My Masterpiece--another great, high energy song with a solid band
    19) Pretty Saro (Another Self Portrait, Self Portrait out-take)--beautiful, simple, heart felt, and very well sung
    20) New Pony-a little guilty pleasure of mine from Street-Legal, but I love the bluesy grove of this song!
And I will also add my vote to a 20 (b) that is the Live 1975 version of Tonight I’ll be Staying Here With You…beyond excellent. What a confident, brilliant artist. Love the Bob! Thx guys and cheers, JPE

Just found this online: Mr. Dylan’s work - “with its iambics, its clackety-clack rhymes, and its scattergun images,” as the critic Robert Christgau wrote - has its own kind of emblematic verbal genius. His diction, focus and tone are those of a caustically gifted word man; his metrical dexterity is everywhere apparent. He is capable of rhetorical organization; more often he scatters his rhetoric like seed, or like curses.

Great summary of the 70’s. All good picks. As far as another of Dylan’s great live vocal performances, I would include “I Ain’t Got No Home” with the Band from the Woody Guthrie Memorial Concert in 1968.

If any other artist had a decade like Dylan 's 70's, their work would be considered good to great. It is a testimony to the man's greatness that except for Blood on the Tracks and the Rolling Thunder Tour and perhaps Desire, his entire 70's work is octaves below his 60's output. He even had a collection of songs (Basement Tapes) that were never originally released but became so wildly popular in bootlegs Columbia was forced to officially release them in 1975.

BTW, if we are considering redos of 60's songs "Hard Rain" electric version from Rolling Thunder. He spits fire like a Banshee from God singing that song. Feels like the book of Revelation come to life. Could not believe this reworking of it when I first heard it. Stunned.

Great lists guys...loving this series. For those of us who love 80's Dylan, it will be interesting to have your takes. Critics were often unkind but there are masterpieces (IMO) on every album and its so interesting to see Bob really searching for direction for most of the decade. When you get to Infidels, I hope you take a minute to watch Bob on Letterman where he promoted the album fronting 3 LA punk band members and its fantastic.

My list -- I'm in the tiny minority on this, but for me Lily Rosemary is one of D's greatest songs. Throwaway lines like "As the leading actor hurried by in the costume of a monk". See Ferlinghetti's poem about this song -- it has layer upon layer, and it works like a movie; the music is bouncy counterpoint to near-perfect storytelling, which uses stock western characters to tell a mythic tale superbly and indelibly. As for the rest of the '70's, 7 from BOTT, 4 from Desire, 6 from New Morning (and there could have been 1 or 2 more -- great album I've only recently started to fully appreciate). Not nearly as many great songs as his '60's work, but his output would be remarkable for any other human.
Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts
    Idiot Wind
    Simple Twist of Fate
    Tangled Up in Blue
    Abandoned Love
    Romance In Durango
    Went to See the Gypsy
    Call Letter Blues
    Black Diamond Bay
    Sign on the Window
    Father of Night
    Knockin on Heaven’s Door
    No Time to Think

    1. Tangled Up And Blue - More Blood, More Tracks
Obviously biased towards the Blood on the Tracks sessions. I prefer the NYC recordings to the five Minneapolis versions. Actually prefer some of the More Blood versions in NYC to the BotT NYC versions, but am to lazy to look up those preferences. 🙂 Greet sessions. Interesting that I rate highly the song left off the album while the one I don't rate from BotT made both your lists.
All of the Desire session songs were much better in concert in 1975. There are now multiple versions of them to pick from for the one that hit's the right spot for a listener. Well, except for Abandoned Love which has just the one performance.
Surprised by the New Morning love on your two lists. Kind of interesting - it was one of my early gateway Dylan albums 40 years ago in college. Easy to listen to, pleasant, his voice at times in good order though occasionally dealing with a cold. I think over time it just felt like a lighter collection of songs, and none really jumping out as great.
#1 is a cliche, but warranted both for quality and being a favorite of mine.
Part of the fun of Dylan - they is so much depth that any number of different songs can appeal to different people.
