It was a song prepared since 2016, but he said back then the girls weren't ready to pull it off, which is why they released Russian Roulette and then Rookie afterwards. Zimzalabim was a contender for title track song since 2016, but only now LSM himself said to the girls: "I think you guys are able to do this now". Zimzalabim drives home why Red Velvet is one of my favourite groups, if not my most favourite. Red Velvet are both versatile and unique: Zimzalabim sounds better and better with each listen. Brilliant trippy, MV combines with an edgy, quirky song that takes you out of your comfort zone. Reminds me a little of Dumb Dumb and Red Flavour. This is indeed one rollercoaster of a song. I also love Wendy's soaring vocals in the bridge backed by the rapid drumming, and how the vocal bridge with it's soft harmonies offers such fresh divergence from the grinding, synthy bass that precedes it.
What you were saying about Red Velvet's experimentalism is SO TRUE. Their whole concept is based on changing it up and challenging musical and visual norms. They made that abundantly clear by following up Bad Boy (which attracted a helluva lot of 'bandwagon' fans interested in the sound they went for there) with Power Up. You never know what you're going to get with them and that's why I love them so much - it's exciting being their fan, because you're always going to get something new and crazy but ultimately still fun and catchy and an absolute bop. Even Power Up, which is probably my least favourite RV title track, goes hard and makes me so happy to listen to. I agree with you wholeheartedly about RV being the most experimental group in kpop - they're not afraid to push boundaries and change things up, and that's why I stan them and love Zimzalabim :)

Wendy's high note somehow made me tear up in the middle of that crazy song so I was on board after the first listen but, yeah, that's definitely one of their most experimental title tracks so I can see why so many people have opposite opinions (*rookie flashbacks*). We can always count on Red Velvet to surprise us.
I felt the same, the song is amazing and it goes so many different directions that it makes it feel like a roller coaster, it truthfully matches the carnival/amusement park concept they were going for this comeback.
The outro is what sells this song for me. It's very climatic, as the whole song revolves into making that "nanana" part at the end feel like an explosive and unique experience within itself.
Joy said herself that this comeback was her favorite to perform because of the unique concept! She said that the negative comments made her sad and that she hoped the fans shared their more positive reactions. I’m glad that Pd is giving this song a chance. :)

I felt the same, the song is amazing and it goes so many different directions that it makes it feel like a roller coaster, it truthfully matches the carnival/amusement park concept they were going for this comeback.
