The biggest problem with trying to bring back standard prodcution car race series is that governments have been actively regulating against race-ready road cars since at least the '70s. Standard production cars now are so much heavier with all the added safety features, with engines that are more oriented towards increased efficiency and reduced emissions rather than more power, and computer controlled electronics that interfere to prevent the driver pushing to the limits of grip.

Apply this to specific eras in the Cup Series:
May 1989 - November 1997: The Thunderbird demolishes all of GM's entries due to being rear-wheel drive.
1998-2004: Tough to say which car would be the most competitive since all the cars at this point are front-wheel drive; not to mention the many various trim levels.
2005-12: A base model Dodge Charger kicks its competitors to the curb since it's rear-wheel drive. Every other entry is a front-wheel drive car.
2013-17: Another case of deja vu as Chevrolet's SS being the only rear-wheel drive car means it has no competition. The power gap between the AWD Fusion and the RWD SS is too great for the Fusion to tackle, even on short tracks.

Also adopt production based engines (e.g. blocks, heads and other parts have to have regular casting and part numbers) that are limited to about 600 hp; how the manufacturers get to that number would be left up to them (big V8, boosted turbo four, etc.) and last, but most definitely not least, cut aero grip by about 50% and mechanical grip by about 25% relative to what the current low downforce package generates.

i think the biggest thing keeping "stock" cars from being race cars is all the extra junk that new cars have these days. so much would have to be removed like airbags and a lot of the interior just so a cage could be built and the car reasonably easy to work on. that alone would probably have the cpu throwing all sorts of fault codes putting the car in limp mode etc. so they would have to have special ECUs to accommodate that. back in the day, a race car and a street car didnt have much difference. they were both empty metal boxes with just the essentials to make it go. these days race cars are still just that, but street cars are more like kitchen appliances, plastic and made JUST stong enough to not fall apart during manufacturer recommend use. my point is they would have to be modified so much from stock that one would question if its even worth it. look at gt3 cars, they're a stock car turned race car and theres still not much left of the original car.

I think it needs to find a middle ground. The trouble with actual stock is that the manu's would just put stiff suspension on, and more HP, and then some aero, and before you knew it you'd be close to the late 60s banana cars. You'd also have a series that looked a lot like either Euro Touring Cars, or perhaps GT3, depending on the rule development. Sure that would gain manufacturers, but I can't imagine NASCAR fans being happy at 911s and 458s running in their series. Heck many still are grumpy that Toyota are there and Dodge/Buick/Pontiac aren't. However, strictly personally I would like to see all racing series across the globe take loads of aero off the cars to put the driver back in charge. So basically, and I think it’s something that a LOT of NASCAR fans don’t get their heads around. But the whole “stock” venue in NASCAR even before the 80s. It wasn’t just the roll cage that was added, drivers and teams were putting modified parts specifically for racing on these street cars. By the time the mid-late 50s came around, nothing about the cars were “stock” I mean the bodies of the car by the 60s and 70s could be converted. Say a driver or team run a Mercury one year and then switch to a Plymouth or Torino body. NASCAR being fully “stock” is highly unlikely ever gonna happen. Take GT sports cars, GT4, GT3, and GTE for example, they’re full race versions of their production cars which I feel like is what the term for NASCAR should be anymore. I’ve kept saying this, but NASCAR should’ve taken notes and made their cars like Trans Am’s TA2 class since they’re stock cars, but r more closely with their production counterpart. And that seems like what we’re getting with the Gen 7 cars. But only time will time with those cars.

Just some mild corrections from watching. The Chevy Camaro ZL1 is actually Supercharged and not Turbocharged. And also the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD is much more aggressive what whats stated. It still lacks compared to the raw output of the Camaro but it does make decent power and the chassis is very ridged and refined. The engine is a V6 making a bit over 300hp in the TRD variant.
Also the new Toyota Supra is not a V6. But is actually an B58 Inline-6 single turbo. Stock trim it makes a bit around 380hp from most people dynoing the cars in stock trim. And even without changing anything some tune adjustments can push the car over the 400hp threshold quite easily and higher.
I do think if they ever did go back they'd have some makers be able to do at least engine modifications if the car didn't already make a bunch of power like the ZL1.
I feel Toyota would have to build a production RWD Camry from factory for starters. Also they'd most likely have to add some form of turbocharger or supercharger to the engine to get more power out of it as well as some lighter weight body parts to be competitive.
Ford would have to shave some of the Mustangs weight and either go up from the base GT to a GT350 or a Shelby to compete with the ZL1. They would definitely need a bump in power to be able to perform at the same level. Rather that comes keeping it with more tuning in its N/A Engine trim or adding a supercharger to it.
I feel if they brought them back to "Stock cars" but allowed them to make proper adjustments and modifications... Toyota's would probably excel at Road courses, the Mustang would be good at Speedways and the ZL1 would be best at Super Speedways.
The racing series would be something like the "IMSA BMW Challenge series".

    1. Just have them keep going whatever way they are looking at now. In a lot of ways, we're never going to truly get the old cars back anyway.
    2. Go full retro with V8s and old muscle-car-styled bodies. I mean, a big part of NASCAR has always been the nostalgia trip, so just go whole hog. As for an existing series that kind of does this, and has been for a long time, take a look at Argentine Turismo Carretera.
As for the track, the original, 2.52-mile layout is always going to be my pick when it comes to Sears Point. Now, the intial short course I thought was better, as you had a nice, sweeping right-hander to take you from Turn 4 around to T7.

I am betting that if a series was created by Nascar to resemble these cars. It would attract a whole host of foriegn and domestic (Dodge) companies. It would be awesome! There would have to be full cages, seats, door foam, & lexan windows. Beefed up suspension, brakes, fluid coolers, & drivetrain. Those would just make for a better race especially if they were factory or available aftermarket parts. What's left then? Chassis, body, motors. Of course this series would never happen because it would be somewhat affordable!!! Racing is never cheap though.

Just gonna ignore the fact the Camaro's top speed is 198ish while the stang's barely 160....nice

I love how he called the 2JZ and the B58 from the fourth and fifth gen Supras a V6.
Those engines are Inline 6 engines. It's a completely different engine from a V6
