From Jim Powell. Thank you, thank you Russell. Saw this last night, went to the range today. Can’t play because of snow and cold. Warmed up put a ball on the tee. My first swing with the driver. Dunked the driver head into the pool and the next thing I knew the ball was soaring straight with a baby draw. I was stunned. How truly easy it was. At seventy five years old and trying to maintain my 9-10 handicap. I feel I am going to have a great year of golf. Can’t wait to get in the pocket of some of the young dudes come spring.
After 5 years of looking for videos to help me hit my driver confidently. This video single handily helped me to move away from hitting driver 220 to 245 with no idea where the ball would be landing to hitting it straighter more consistently than I ever have and farther than I ever have: between 250 to 285 yards! Thank you Russell!!!
Went to the range today as I've been so inconsistent with my driver and working on my turn. 100 balls into it my club was way outside coming down as I was turning and obviously too steep and then remembered this lesson I saw just this past week and put it to the test. On to the next 100 balls......and WOW! it works. The shaft coming down is now swallowed, much easier to feel comfortable turning, solid hits, greater distance. I have applied it to my irons as well with the same result. Terrific tip! I wasn't sure I could do it but I left the range with a whole new confidence in my downswing. Thanks again!!!!!!
This is one of the best moves Ive ever come over. It was an epiphany, and I wondered why I hadnt heard about it before. The way I practice this is shifting the feeling in my hands in transition from holding the club with my thumbs (radial) to feeling the pressure more in my little fingers (ulnar). The result is astounding.
Hi Russell.I took this the range today and immediate better sequencing with the body rotation and way more distance .Went from Driver to hybrid ,all positive. Has to be a real game changer for all clubs. Thanks heaps. JR.
Wow just tried it on the sim, I have to add the shortened backswing but it works. Normally drive it 250 to 265. Hit a few dozen out at 280 to 307. That has never happened in my game, EVER!!! TKS.
Loving your videos. Have an undersized 12 year old competitive player. I share videos that apply to him often. Love the length of them. Perfect for a kids attention span! Especially loved this one and how you paired flattening the downswing with the image of hitting the water behind you with body rotation. Great tip! Also bold of you to hit one off the deck to end it!
It's a rare 75 degree day in November here so I going to the range to try this. I'm still recovering from back surgery so hope this will also be easy on my body. Best,Tim
I'm 65 been playing many years between 8 hcp to 12 now. Suddenly lost all confidence in the driver and woods/rescues in general in the feel I should have from top of swing to impact. I Will try your pool of water analogy and see if this works. Now I have to start thinking about swing technicalities is proving difficult for me.
This is an intersting one, and something I must try on the range. The 'throwing the club into a pool of eater beside you' is an interesting way of getting the right feeling.
For me I feel like I slammed the club down and rotate at the same time. It's so good to see you doing it it gives me more confident in what I'm doing right now thank you
@@russellheritagegolf for me it work for the iron also. I don't feel as comfortable come down to the wedge. You definitely reinforce me what I'm doing is correct just because you teaching it so thank you again
Nice video and I've heard about this motion before from different sources. Would be great to have an DTL angle of it too, makes it easier to really see what happens as you start your downswing.
Great video as usual, Russ. It confirms the teachings of Mike Austin and lately of Steve Pratt. You convinced me to finally try it. The only question remains: in which direction do you throw the club to the pond? Is it almost opposite the target (let's say 180 degrees) or at some other angle less then 180 degrees? Or maybe it depends on the speed of body rotation. Greatly appreciated.
Great video. More Driver accuracy focused videos would be appreciated. Thank you for posting this one. My pro taught me this move. Your video helps reinforce that lesson.
This really made sense to me and explains why I struggle with driver. I steepen on the way down with driver and really you have to get driver on a path that gets the club close to your address position. This is impossible if you're steep and it's also why my hands get so high. I'm going to get my hip deep, keep it there and chop the water on my right and turn! This is not going to go well but at least I understand the concept and the problems now!
Thanks, This is a great drill and has really helped me to get the path on the inside, hit more up on the ball and thus get more distance, sometimes my arms get stuck and its hard to rotate fully
Thanx for sharing, Russell. My coach said the same to me a couple of years ago. Controversial it may seem, since then I forgot, what's a slice or over the top. It does work, guys! And please don't be afraid to "cast". Trust me, this won't hinder your lag if you have any))
Im 54 and play of 7..Tried this today and was amazed how consistent I was hitting the drive..long and sometimes with a slight draw...tried same move with irons but not hitting so good...Can you now post the magic downswing move with the irons?? Thanks Russell!!
Great video, Always struggle with staying on my back foot with driver as a safe swing to keep me in play, but ultimately lose alot of distance until I warm up. Will definitely be trying this👍
Love your insights. But Russel, buddy, I need advice on my 'second' thought on what to do after I try this and stick the club three feet in the ground near my back foot. My 'first' thought of course will be to blame you. 😊
Hi Russel, you talk about the pool of water. I feel that I cast a fishingpole (the club) toward 7 o’clock. Where 12 o’clock is the target so 6 is behind you. What’s your thoughts on this. Great video it sounded realy familiar
This move is Great it helps me rotate if I don't the club will hit 5 inches behind the ball, Been working with Russ for a few weeks online now learning a lot about my swing, he works very hard my issues
Love the image of trying to push the club head through water. It would make no sense to try to do it with your hands. You have to put your body and shoulder behind the club head to drive it through. Brilliant!
I try to keep my wrist flat on backswing with driver to avoid hooking the ball, my problem from here is I can still hook it by over turning going back, or not going back far enough which leads me to a quick follow through that I never finish and blocking the ball. Getting enough back turn then timing the rotation through is something I have great difficulty with. I could watch your driver lessons all day. Thanks
How is “throwing that club” into the invisible pool different from “casting” and losing the angle or lag. Is it that doing so in conjunction with the turn we are just “unloading” on the ball sort or right on time? Great vid as always!
Hi, Gr8 vid! My local pro kind-of said my hands and clubhead (driver) are in a "race" and the clubhead must win the race to the ball. It sounds like your idea of throwing it into a pool next to you promotes the same feel. Any thoughts? Regards Inus Prinsloo
Very useful Russ, and I get it with the long clubs. But how does this tie in with lag and forward shaft lean especially with mid to shorter irons? Perhaps I missed something. Steve.
You’ve helped me a great deal this year. Thanks for that, now how about hitting the half or 3/4 shot. SLow down my normal swing? Reduce the length of my backswing? Choke up on the club? Or a combination a some of the above. What do you recommend that will give me consistent repeatable distances
Always like your lessons. Driver is my most inconsistant club so more on it is good. You talked about imagining hitting into ‘water’ on the down swing but I’ve been trying to release late closer to the ball. Am I trying to release too late? All the best! Eddie
4:39 - We are shallowing the attack. We also call this, "Letting it Out". Which means the angle of the trail arm at the elbow, should be more obtuse for most people. Also, we don't want to "Hold the Set" too deep for too long. "Hold the Set" refers to the depth of the angle of the wrists, and can also apply to the angle at the trail elbow. So "Letting it Out" simply means to allow (and hold) a more obtuse angle at both the wrists and trail elbow. This will dramatically increase accuracy for most players while still giving good distance. The 2 extremes that come to my mind are Cameron Champ vs Steve Stricker. Cameron holds a very deep set, and does not "Let Out" the angles until very late in the swing, while Steve Stricker is just the opposite. Steve "Lets Out" the angles a little bit, then holds them in place while he completes his swing, very effective way to play golf. At 4:53, watch when Russell swings, his trail arm actually has an obtuse angle at the elbow when the shaft is parallel to the ground ("Letting it Out"). Also notice how his head is almost looking toward the target. From there he can just pour on the speed knowing the club head is attacking the ball more shallow and along the target line. Paused at 6:22 with Russell's hands almost at his rear pocket we can see he holds a fairly "deep set" both in the wrists and trail elbow compared to most amateurs. As the player gets better and more consistent, they can experiment with holding the angles a little deeper and longer to see if they get added distance while maintaining accuracy. Another GOLD video!!
ive tried this. now my pre shot is 2 'throw the club into the water' and 1 rotate. then actual shot. Now im getting better strike's. But on the poorer strikes im getting feedback. ie, not enough rotation and once i improve that the next shot is back to a purer strike. love the 'tip'
just seen this. Validates what you have been saying and makes me happy to know that Im doing a Butch Harmon drill. www.golfdigest.com/story/improve-your-iron-consistency-with-one-of-butch-harmons-favorite-drills?
Hi Russell, I am sure that this was asked but couldn't find it in the comments. How you use use this concept or modify the thought for and iron swing where its still beneficial to be shallow but not as much behind the ball.
In another video of yours you show Dustin Johnson cupping the right wrist at take away with a hybrid. I assume this should be done for hybrids and irons. What happens with the wrist during a fairway wood or driver swing?
you explain the connect from trunk to upper release very well, i would love to see a video on eye line sternum head lean for different clubs set ups...tx
Hi, good video. Rather than throwing the club, I have been working to keep the back of my left hand facing forward and my left arm straighter. After that I just rotate my hips… question, I have started to make a pause at the end of the back swing before moving forward, almost a quick check on position. Is that a bad habit I will eventually regret? Thanks Brian
Russel, haven't tried yet but think it will help me massively//. Question is as you "throw the club into the water" do you release the angle in your wrists way back there (before your club get to your rear leg)?? From the video it appears as though you did,
Another great video Russ. Time range 4:55 - 5:05 is very helpful. Finding plane while rotating. Making the swing change initially created over the top and steep shaft feels. Blending chest rotation and throwing to side of body, will do. Thanks!
Tried this in the back garden and loved the feel of the club coming more from the inside. Indeed I have seen a similar tutorial which promotes the concept of a wide arc, which a equals shallow downswing. That said, I do have a problem with one of your previous videos where you promote the trail elbow holding the right angle produced at the top of the swing for a long as possible to create lag. Are these two concepts not at odds with one another or am I missing something?
Another trademark “awesome” video... thanks Russel!! Will be practicing this in the garden tomorrow, now lockdown’s back. Can I ask, is the swing plane the same as when using irons as I find my iron swing is more vertical - and as you mentioned, I’m much better with my irons. My driver swing feels more around my body and I find my driver setup only seems to work when I’m very vertical, not too wide a stance (a couple of inches wider than irons) and with a super strong grip (to eliminate the face being open) - my driver is 10.5 degrees and typically carries 240 yards. Thanks again, loving the new weekly format 👍🏼
That makes so much sense!! I’ve been practicing (and filming slow motion) the throw down move and it instantly feels more natural - so excited to try this on the range! I found the throw down move also felt comfortable with my irons, so wondered if this was a driver specific move or can it be used for both? Also, thanks for taking the time to reply - it’s much appreciated 😊
If you're able to use your left hip returning to tush line to shallow club ... then I'm assuming this move isn't necessary? I find i get plenty of shallowing from my pivot and i put in a little left hand motorcycle type move during transition... do those two taken together replace the purpose of this move??
The are different ways to deliver the golf club for sure. Whether you drive the elbow or allow it to straighten depends on what suits you and your body motion
I'm definitely going to be working on that because my driver is the biggest part of my game mentally when its off my whole bag is off so ill let you know what happens.
Russell, it would be extremely appreciated if you could go through this bucket of water move in extreme detail. I have trouble with distance with the driver and all my golfing buddies hit farther than me. I get frustrated because I’m always having to use a long iron or hybrid or fairway wood for my approach shots to the Green. Very seldom can I use an iron for my approach shot. I am intrigued by your bucket of water scenario and would like to know everything about it, like how do the hands, right elbow, legs work. I’m sure you are not suggesting releasing the wrist cock at the start of the swing toward the bucket of water. Can you go over it in more depth and, maybe, show it in slow motion and all the intricacies that go with this bucket of water scenario? Thanks!
Just watch Peter Crocker. He figured this out 25 years ago. Had the cover of golf digest two months in a row explaining this. He studied people throwing the club out of the top since it was the worst thing you supposedly could do in the golf swing. He found out that it actually improved a lot of the player’s swings. He’s probably not the publicity hound some of the guru teachers are but he’s a lot smarter. Not sure why this is not more widely known.
R what separates your instruction from all the other TH-camrs is how you articulate each move in the swing, so much easier to understand what I need to do....
When you say throw the club are we keeping our wrist angles initially (ie 90 degrees between wrists and club) as in more like a pump action of the arms and hands ? Its not a casting action is it ?..which it kind of ends up looking like when you don't rotate? I watched Lee 6(LPGA) in Toronto last year and she did this ritual of a pump drill beside the ball. She swang to the top and pumped her arms and hands down from the top of backswing without releasing the club before going into her regular routine behind the ball.
Having tried this yesterday with great results you are correct. This is solely an arm pumping action and not an uncocking if the wrists. To uncock the wrist at this point in the swing I would think wouldn't be good. The purpose is to get the long driver on plane and the club head will begin on an upward arc hitting the ball on an upward strike. Just my two cents and hopefully Russell will chine in.
Why is it that some players even higher handicap players are so consistent from chipping and pitching distances I play off 9.6 but a lot of my playing mates are off 14 or even higher but are way more consistent from 20 yards in please help it’s doing my head in .

Its the type of move that would have to match your swing. I will talk about this lore in upcoming videos
Another great video Russ. Time range 4:55 - 5:05 is very helpful. Finding plane while rotating. Making the swing change initially created over the top and steep shaft feels. Blending chest rotation and throwing to side of body, will do. Thanks!
Nice one Ross

Indeed I have seen a similar tutorial which promotes the concept of a wide arc, which a equals shallow downswing. That said, I do have a problem with one of your previous videos where you promote the trail elbow holding the right angle produced at the top of the swing for a long as possible to create lag. Are these two concepts not at odds with one another or am I missing something?
Watch my latest video from Sunday this should help
The driver shaft is shallower than the iron due the shaft angle at address but the concept of staying on plane is the same for sure
Very good explanation of this basic swing concept. Should you hold your release longer or does it matter?
This is a product of rotation the more you turn the less you’ll feel your hands
If you're able to use your left hip returning to tush line to shallow club ... then I'm assuming this move isn't necessary? I find i get plenty of shallowing from my pivot and i put in a little left hand motorcycle type move during transition... do those two taken together replace the purpose of this move??
The are different ways to deliver the golf club for sure. Whether you drive the elbow or allow it to straighten depends on what suits you and your body motion
I'm definitely going to be working on that because my driver is the biggest part of my game mentally when its off my whole bag is off so ill let you know what happens.
Hopefully it helps
Thanks!
Yeah quite a few have asked so will get on it
Thank you...
This is gold
Cheers Ben
What a great tip.
Thank you
Use props when you can it helps the motion of the difference golf swings
What is the difference between "throwing the club" vs. "casting"? How does "lag" fit into this equation?
Thanks Russell!
Watch the latest video on the channel please
Wonderfully full of insight
That was excellent!
Thank you
Just watch Peter Crocker.
Peter Croker.....
Thanks for sharing
Does this not release any lag that would have potentially been stored until a little later in the downswing ?
Possibly
Great video!
I like the CK quarter zip.
Yeah it’s a nice one + plus a gift from a friend too 🤣
R what separates your instruction from all the other TH-camrs is how you articulate each move in the swing, so much easier to understand what I need to do....
Thank you
When you say throw the club are we keeping our wrist angles initially (ie 90 degrees between wrists and club) as in more like a pump action of the arms and hands ?
Very good Dan
Dan the comment below has explained this very well
Yup, this works. Local pro told me this.
Hi russ what sort of distance can a golfer expect to get from say 90 100 110 club head speed cheers static 👍👍👍
Will be on this subject very soon
This is what Ben Hogan called the "magic move". He described at as sticking your trail elbow into your side at the beginning of the down swing.
Yep 👍🏻
Need down the line view. Isn't this close to "casting" the club? As usual...thank you for what you do!
It’s a feeling that I’ll explain in future videos on the channel for sure
For all the “swing secrets” on youtube, this little gem should be in the top tier...
Thanks
This guy is on it....he's gonna put guys out of business no BS just facts..😉
I think they used to call "the throw" tolling the belll.
Why is it that some players even higher handicap players are so consistent from chipping and pitching distances I play off 9.6 but a lot of my playing mates are off 14 or even higher but are way more consistent from 20 yards in please help it’s doing my head in .
He’s to say without seeing it? 🤷🏻 might be worth a lesson
