Hi john and little john I've been an angler for nearly 60 years doing coarse, fly and sea fishing and I've noticed that you go for your rod too quickly and don't give the fish a chance to take the hook properly and you strike as though you're hitting a carp lol I hope that you can take a bit of advice from an oldie and let the bite develop and when you do pick up your rod just lift gently to feel the fish as 9 times out of 10 the fish will hook itself especially if you use a circle hook or an offset j hook and don't be afraid of using hooks of size 4, you will be surprised at how big a fish a smaller hook will catch 😉 😀 😄 😜 👍 😁
