I'd have imagined Pachinko would have been pretty tough to turn into a game what with all the physics involved.
But I'm surprised there's no over the top/fantasy versions, pachinko machines that could never physically exist in real life, like what they did to pinball with Flipnik.

+Larry Bundy Jr I was thinking the same thing, especially as I was editing the video together. I've recently been playing around with 3D modeling, and was thinking of how much of a pain in the ass it must have been to program that Cotton pachinko game...
It might be pretty cool if there was some kind of fantasy pachinko game...turn it into something like Puzzle Quest or something silly. If you liked Flipnic, you'd probably also like Kyuutenkai...if you haven't check it out already. Anyway, thanks for watching, oh Guru. ;)

+poo munstar Ha ha, well, thanks for drinking, happy to get you buzzing. And I think for this episode, not having tasteless ball jokes would have been a travesty...not much unlike making a half hour video about pachinko. ;)

    Thanks for the video!
You may or may not be aware, but the Pachinko Wars games are actually sequels to two Famicom games called Pachinko Daisakusen 1 and Pachinko Daisakusen 2. I at least assume they're sequels, as they're by the same publisher and feature the same 008 character.

Cool video, makes me wonder if anybody did a pachinko video game in a vein similar to pinball sims like The Pinball Arcade and Pinball FX, recreating real vintage machines digitally to play on and preserve them for everyone to enjoy?
Knew of pachinko tangentially through my love of pinball, but never really gave it much thought until I found a 70's mechanical pachinko in an antique shop. Knew what it was, always wanted a pinball machine but never had the space or cash for one, so I bought it as a sort of "close enough".
Needed a LOT of cleaning and a little TLC to the electrics and mechanical parts, but I got it playing well and looking nice again. Freely admit it's a simple game and there's no real point to it, but the lights flashing and the bell going ding-ding-ding is amusing.
Found another one, so I guess I'm going to build a mini pachi parlor. No gambling of course, just cool drinks and good company.

oooh that Minako lady you sat down with is nice. Lot's of those 16-bit babes are looking sexy, too bad they're gold diggers! Too bad cause I'm a cheap ass. Very cool game with extra stuff going on behind the scenes. I definitely like that game the most here. Bene really gave you a lot to use haha. I'm glad you were able to use your Matt voice for good instead of evil for once.
You seriously went 33 minutes about Pachinko though. That's hilarious. Looks like the video did well! 1,300 views! That's awesome, man. Well to my standards it's a success :)
I think this video was great. Nice departure from the usual. Pachinko parlors were a shock to me when I saw them all over Japan. Zombie is definitely the correct term to use. I never realized they had trading stores next door. Clever system they got going. I need to go visit again someday. Maybe this time I'll play the games and get those plastic gold bars. Also, really great editing and voice work as usual. I know I say this every time but your photoshop skill is top notch.

The flipper based pin ball machines really brings me back to my childhood! The ones I've played the most are Batman, Gilligan's Island and Star Trek. I'm sure there are a bunch of others before and after that, but I don't remember them.
The history of Pachinko is really awesome and noteworthy to the evolution of gaming(though I would have never realized this if I hadn't seen your awesome video, Jimmy)! I think before I die, I'd at least want to get a crack at the Ganbare Goemon and Fatal Fury ones, those intrigue me the most!

You know, I tried to find one of the Goemon machines in about five or six different parlors, even ones that had old machines, but no luck. And they're actually not pachinko, but slot machines...even more lame! Not sure about the Fatal Fury one(s)...but I might have to look the next time I'm wandering around on my bike!

    • @ImportGamingFTW

Food and booze does go well with gambling, most likely making it a more expensive endeavor. I've seen some pachinko places here in Japan serve snacks and alcohol, but the ones I went to to record for this video only had soft drink vending machines, so I have no idea why all those people would want to hang in them for so long!

Awesome video as always Jimmy! This was cool to learn about pachinko. Always known of it on a surface level, but never looked more into it or knew what the hell was going on in the games or what the main goal was. And yet when I search for imports I often come across dozens of pachinko games all the time. That Pachinko Monogatari 2 was interesting to me, just weird to wrap pachinko with all these other elements and story. You know whats funny, I bought a Pachio-kun game a few months ago. I bought the puzzle game for gameboy. From what ive seen of the other games in the series they look very charming and fun. This opened my mind to maybe checking out some pachinko games after avoiding them for so long. I mean I have to jump on the hype train because the future of gaming is pachinko obviously or at least for certain companies lol. Also I am very interested in Yellow Cab... for reasons. :D

I just know now I'm not allowed to take my son there .. after he saw the shinchan episode where the family was in the pachinko hall he really is looking forward to go play pachinko with me in the hall.. :D but few kids arcades in Tokyo have pachinko and slots but not with the money exchange outside, just for arcade coins to play games or for ufo catcher

I always referred to those games as shooter games but my friends refer only to first person shooters as shooters and insisted the stuff I call shooter games are shoot em ups, although many shooter games don't really seem to apply as shoot em ups seem to imply you have many regular enemies and all so games like Asteroids or games with only bosses, I dunno. Just makes more sense to call them shooters. Also I only recently looked into 16 bit shooters and I seem to see cotton here and there although this is the first time I heard someone mention it. Whenever I refer to the earliest pinball games I just add "pachinko-styled" to specify I don't mean the kind with flippers.

Anyway, it's from Pachinko Monogatari 2. It plays during one of the areas in the building, and also during the ending. Also, nice avatar/username.

Pachicom has an 'interesting' hidden dev message buried in the ROM tcrf.net/Pachi_Com_(NES) the message contains a way to disable the annoying beeping sound so you can actually hear the ball and game sounds.

i have a huge collection of sfc games and have to admit, i am a SUCKER for pachinko game covers! They are so imaginative!
I dreamed of finding a review of pachinko games because i have always wondered what would be the point of playing one, as you don't get the money lol.
But some of those games have a heavy RPG side to them! It's awesome!
    thanks!!!!
