- Most high-end restaurants will have something truffle-flavored on the menu, whether it be truffle fries, truffle butter, or truffle mac and cheese. It gives the foods an air of quality and sophistication. But do these products actually have any truffle in them?

Truffle oil is liked whipped cream from a can. It’s infinitely less good than the real thing, but it hits the spot when you need something like it
Honestly the problem with MasterChef and a lot of Food Network shows is how much it caters to the uber elite who apparently can afford to pay 1k per pound of food stuff. For most regular joes "expensive" is a meal that on the individual level costs more then $50 (not including alcohol or gratuities). There is a lot of snobbery with these shows "this is garbage" referring to what most people are happy to eat on a daily basis.
While this is true of artificial truffle oil not only are there a variety of truffle oils infused with real truffles but the majority of the ones I've seen on the market use real truffles either on it's own or with artificial truffle aroma. Also, Gordon Ramsay did denounce artificial truffle oil, but said that natural truffle oil is a good middle ground between the mind blowing complexity of fresh truffles and the pungent mess offered by artificially infused oils.
Azraelmaximilian I just was in Rome and passed by a farmers' market that sold both what they said was "Olive Oil with Added Truffle" and just normal fake truffle oil. The vendor let me try both and the first one had a much stronger truffle flavor.

Just bought two bottles of Santini truffle oil (white and black) for $7.99 (8.4 fl oz.) each imported from Italy. "Ingredients: extra virgin olive oil infused with white /black truffle (tuber magnatum pico/tuber aestivum vitt), arome." "Arome" is aroma and a third ingredient, but the infusion is real so I guess you need to read the bottle or company website before you buy.
Wait so the arome means that chemical compound? And that it doesn't really contain real truffles at all?
It also contains real, dehydrated truffle that give barely any flavor, but people like to see them at the bottom of their bottles
I always feel its the suppliers that sell truffles that are spreading propaganda that truffle oil is bad. Its actually incredible.
I like it on french fries with garlic and stuff actually. I don't particularly care that it's synthetic as long as it's relatively safe for consumption.
Real truffles are mainly just for conspicuous consumption anyway.

I mean if you're a home cook (even chef), if it works for your dishes then use it, because overall it's expensive and hard to put real truffle to your table, and the only thing to look for is the oil that's used, if it's olive oil then buy, if it's from highly refined oil like canola then doesn't.
There is one thing I've noticed. When I saw the truffle oil on Amazon some of the expensive ones have not only labelled "truffle flavour (natural flavour)" but actually have "truffle and truffle flavour", I'm not sure if they have actually put a very small amount of real truffle in it.
Except there is real truffle oil, basically oil infused with bits of truffle. I've got some sitting in my cupboard right now and it has slices of truffle in it.
I like the truffle oil taste. If it tastes good and give your food a savory taste, why not.

Uh, sorry, but this is misleading. I actually just purchased White Truffle Oil from Regalis Food. And yes, they do actually use true White Truffles to infuse the olive oil. Very pungent and delicious and earthy. Can't wait to use it.
