    The traffic light issue: TMPE doesn’t add lights per lane. It adds them per direction. And it doesn’t recognize unique directions when it is a single straight road. So the mode button switches between straight and straight with an arrow which changes nothing. Feel free to try!

      You can lookup roads in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Grand Rapids, Michigan for examples. Also Detroit.
      At 12:45 we have roads like that and if you want to go straight through there usually isn't a light stopping cars from just going through, unless there is a crosswalk at the light. Most of the time if you want to do the u-turn there's a yield sign or a stop sign instead of a light. On the busier roads there would be a light though.
      One thing that might help if you do use this is that the area where the u-turn is needs to be a bit closer to the intersection. You're supposed to be able to do the u-turn and still have enough time to turn right by the time the next light flashes.

    About measuring the traffic flow: The "problem" is that these intersections all handle all of the traffic that currently gets thrown at them. That means your traffic flow will be exactly equal to what comes in through your external highway connections. In order to really test it, you'd need to increase the load. Either by making a new intersection test map that has more than 8 highways coming in (I don't know if it has 8 connections because everyone knows that that's the maximum number of connections into a single node or if it's also the limit on external connections). Or by putting down a bus depot and running a whole lot of bus lines back and forth through the intersection.
    If you go for the latter, you can measure how much bus traffic the intersection handles as follows:
    For each bus line, sample a single bus and measure how long it takes it to complete its loop. Multiply the number of passes through the intersection that the line makes with the number of buses on the line and divide by the loop duration.
    This tells you how many buses this one line sends through the intersection. Do the same for every line and add up the results.
    To get the total traffic (buses and external vehicles), it might be a good idea to make the buses give way to the external traffic. As long as the external traffic is handled in its entirety, you can say "the intersection handles the flow of 8 external connections and 352 buses per minute". And despite the former being unknown, you would be able to compare the results.

    it's all about buffering area, roundabout have 4 conflict areas, and we tend to squeeze them very close to each other, while every other solution separates conflict areas as far as one can make it.
    in real life we use roundabouts to slow down the traffic as well, so people won't zoom at 140 though the city. This game don't have pedestrian safety, so free flowing junctions everywhere, and cars that zoom at top speed all the time make sense.

    Great video, the CFI was fun and very useful to implement. At 3:25 I did find an answer for having a cosmetic barrier protecting left turn lane driving into oncoming traffic. Using intersection marking tool I drew a line along the left turn lane and changed the style from dashed to "decorative network" which then offers a further choice of "network asset" where you can choose from any network wall/fence/curb etc. I used an asset from the workshop called "Concrete barrier - 01" which is like a highway median barrier. Another good option is the double sided crash barrier from "Network Fences - Road Decoration Pack" in the workshop.

  • @3xitCoC

    One way to solve the traffic light problem with the continuous flow intersection is to ban taxis (for example) from the lane crossing over to the displaced left turn. This gives you separate control over the lanes going straight and the lane crossing over, since TMPE displays lanes with a vehicle restriction separately in the traffic light UI. The downside being that taxis or another vehicle type of your choosing won't be able to use the left turn, obviously.

  • @gwalla
    @gwalla ปีที่แล้ว +1

    AIUI a jughandle is kind of the inverse of the quadrant intersection you implemented here. Your quadrants are set up so that left turning traffic goes through the central crossing, then turns right onto the side road and right again onto the other stree; I'm pretty sure in a jughandle *all* turning traffic, right and left, bears right onto the side road, and then left turning traffic still turns left (but at a T intersection). On the plus side it means people turning left don't have to drive as far overall, but on the minus side it means you still have actual lefts (albeit with no opposing traffic).

    One fun thing to do with a junction between a street with center tram tracks and a major cross street is to kind of combine the Continuous Flow and Michigan Left approaches. The tram street has a displaced left, so left turning traffic crosses the tram tracks (and opposing traffic) before reaching the central junction, just like in the CFI. Traffic turning left from the cross street to the tram street, meanwhile, instead turns right in the central junction (i.e. not using the right turn slip lane) into the inside U-turn lane. The U-turn itself is right next to the crossover for the displaced left, between it and the central junction; since the U-turn crosses a pair of tracks, I think you can get away with having the U-turn directly into the inside lane, so it doesn't conflict with through traffic.
    Part of the point here is not just to handle a ton of left turning traffic, but keeping that left turning traffic from blocking the trams.
    It probably requires the node-overloading approach you used in your old CFI video. I can't think of a way to pull it off with just 2 roads like here--in fact the only way I know involves splitting the tram street into two one-way roads with a 2-way tram tracks network in between (you can save a bit of space by using a reversed-lanes road for both crossovers together). And setting up the lights properly is super fiddly. Pretty nifty though.

    On one hand, you look like what I'd expect, but, on the other hand, because of the avatar I kinda expected a wizard. "Junction hierarchy" is a good term. Turns out I have devoted a great deal of thought to this concept without having a phrase for it. Of course, your videos, more than anyone else's I think, have built up this area of knowledge. Best idea I have for measuring flow is using TMPE's flow figure for timed traffic lights. I think you have to turn it on in the options. Something to keep in mind is it changes based on how you set the flow meter, so comparing a 0.4 to 0.6 setup is not apples to apples. Naturally this can't be used for everything, especially junctions lacking timed lights.

    Due to the lighting function of the CFI, I'm interested in what the system looks like with a local road intersection at the external lights. Since they are operating as alternating in--out, you have an opportunity for protected left turns onto smaller roads for each block.
    As a note, the double jug handle would seem to promote a center lane train or tram.

    Pedestrian Bridge Builder is awesome for building bridges or making tunnels. Mod might be outdated but it is still working fine. Use a combined Bike/Pedestrian path and tunnel under or bridge over. I do this almost every time and integrate it in my biggest cross roads in the city center.

    Hi Yumble, i think you are able to create a green zone for straight traffic. By clicking on the "Change mode" button next to where you can select red of green for a traffic light. You can create different options. So you will be able to select one for left (u-turn) en one for straight wich you can always put on green.

    I love the jughandle intersection - very similar to what I see here in New Jersey, however attaching the right hand movement to the handle as a slip lane is definitely not as common. I think allowing that movement to be a Right-on-Red if there is no incoming traffic from the left hand turn lane would be more accurate to real life and help clear a little bit of extra queuing.

    • @fumanchu4785

      In one word: separation.
      Make different rail networks for cargo and people. Try also separating any other traffic from each other as much as you can. You could do separate bike/pedestrian paths and even separate street cargo from the people and so on... Try to avoid shared lanes! Give everyone their own path or even network if possible. You don't want to have every network chucked alongside the other, they can go different directions.

    there are two massive intersections with a metro station in between them in my neighborhood and they always had crazy traffic obviously. there has been a huge redevelopment project that uses the u-turn lanes really well. the road in between the two intersections is now right turn only + 6 lanes with a median. it’s a little confusing and irritating to turn left and people are still idiots because it’s boston but it has helped so much

    As someone who grew up in Michigan, gotta say THANK YOU for making a video that actually displays how a Michigan left works 🤣 people love to hate on this kind of intersection because their states do it wrong 🤣 it is actually super efficient and convenient if it's implemented properly... When I see it in other places, I always feel like there is something missing that makes it awkward, inconvenient, or dangerous, but whenever I go home, I'm reminded of how much I miss it, lol.

    The way you can overcome the traffic light limitation is by changing one of the lanes to disallow a certain vehicle type. This will add a separate traffic light changer into the TMPE overlay which functions for just that lane. Obviously this will ban that certain vehicle from that lane, but you can do it to buses if there are no buses that run on that lane, or emergency vehicles because they are allowed to ignore the lane arrows, meaning they can just turn from one of the other lanes that other cars normally wouldn't be able to.

  • @jaydouglas1090
    @jaydouglas1090 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the CFI, you can add more traffic lights to the four left turn areas. Then you can set the left turn across traffic as red and the other lanes green so you have continuous flow.

    In Michigan it's more common to see a Michigan Left with a major road with a median, and a smaller road that's crossing it which wouldn't have the U-turns, and often wouldn't have a median. Left turns could either be U-turn then right, to get off the median road, or to turn left onto it would just be a right turn then a U-turn. Only if you've got two major roads with medians would you see U-turns available on both, and then drivers get a choice which to use.

  • @kennith.

    Yumbl I think you can also allow right hand turns on red lights in TMPE. You can also set lights on the one side of the road to be always green and not on the other to allow the traffic to go to the red. That will allow the stopping of cars that are effected by the u turn or the displaced left while allowing the side not effected to carry on straight. You can also set don't enter intersection if there are cars and this will stop the displaced and u turn guys from driving into oncoming traffic even if the light is green.

    • @YUMBL
      @YUMBL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There actually might be a slight amount of optimisation to the light-only simple multi-laned intersection show as the last option in this video. Traffic seems to have a fraction of left-turners in comparison to stright through going vehicles. This would allow using dedicated oncoming left-turn-phases instead of the green per oncoming direction in the video. European per lane traffic controller even toggle in between those per cycle using sensors.

    In real life roundabouts (of course with some exceptions) don't tend to be on roads with more than two or three lanes in each direction.
    They are high flow and safer than four way stops or giveway roads but they are not really intended for 4 or more lanes in one direction.
    Yes there may be some around the world that have more lanes but not a common occurrence since the roundabout can become too deep with lanes.
    Roundabouts are common in my city here in Australia but when an extremely busy road intersection area with many lanes in each direction becomes congested the money is usually eventually allocated to upgrade with over and/or underpasses, maybe a flyover and traffic light removal to keep a continuous flow to reduce travel timenfor the main through way.

    You can actually build a roundabout that is able to digest the traffic generated by the interchange testing map. However, it needs 2 phase traffic lights at every entrance and for that reason needs to have very large segments to buffer the traffic during the red phase. I have seen this kind of roundabout with traffic lights in the UK., but of course the large footprint prohibits its use in an urban environment.
