Hi, My name is Jim. I live in New Hampshire, I have an old Slingerland snare that I’ve been trying to figure out the date of. It’s got a camo finish, obviously paint! But the badge is original. My Daughter and I are drummers, and we picked this up at a garage sale a few years ago. I just bought a new TAMA set and dug this out. It has the black and brass or copperbadge, and this is the number on the right side of the oval badge. 68928 The man at the garage sale said it was played in a jazz band in Texas in the 60’s he said it was a 1965. Do you know if its maple or walnut? And maybe a better way to date it? Thank you very much. Jim

Hi Jim, If the inside is maple like the re-rings it could be a solid maple drum. Depends on the model though. Send me a few pics, I need to see the bearing edge. budsmusic@hotmail.com

Look for Slingerland Vintage Snares Badge Listings on the Internet ! Slingerland never used Walnut for its drum shells . Maple Shells were used !!

Hola from North Phoenix! I'm getting ready to re-cut edges for a clients solid shell RK with rings. Do you know what the edge profiles are? Closest I can come is a 30 degree inside, but I have no clue what they used for the outside edge. Thanks!

That drum is not an Artist model, nor is it pre-1936. Those lugs are roughly 1938. Earlier lugs were tapped and did not have springs. The Streamlined lugs were introduced in 1935 when the Broadcaster line came out. Prior to that, tube lugs were used. Thus drum is probably '39. If the drum was an Artist or Broadcaster, it would have had a single round red felt tone control. And a totally different, complicated tone control mechanism. The lack of extended snare brackets and bottom hoop with the screw-on "gates" makes this drum either a Student model or "Buddy Rich" style model. The Artist model drums were offered in 1928-1936 and had tube lugs. The Broadcaster was introduced in 1935 and were the first drums to have the Radio King style lugs. And the very first Radio Kings (1936/37) had actual hand engraved top hoops. You have a very nice drum and your restoration skills are excellent. But your historical comments are quite incorrect.

Okay Mark, you would know much more about this drum than I would and I stand corrected. But did you see the catalog picture of this exact drum that I show. It definitely shows these lugs ( tapped or not). I know about the earlier tube lug ones and have a video of that one, but check out the 1936 catalog in my vid and you will see that they called this the Artist model with streamlined lugs. Your input is always top notch, and its good to have you here. Bruce

Welcome to my channel Mark. I was only going off of the catalog that I show in the video. Look at it and tell me this isn't the drum I have.It sure looks like it. Thanks for your input, you are the best! Bruce
