    Ford and Chevy both have created an ultimate track focused version of their muscle car. The Mustang and Camaro have faced off for decades, so we decided to directly compare the latest ZL1 1LE and a Shelby GT350R. Both approach the challenge of a track focused muscle car using a different recipe...and both end up so epic. Check out what its like to own these car and the direct head to head comparison!

      It is. I just drove my Beat up to Michigan for the Woodward Dream Cruise. I've driven in Michigan plenty before but with a tiny car on crazy stiff coilovers it put the roads in a whole new light.
      Can'tHave2MuchHP - you are wrong. All that is is heavy rear springs to deal with the load, so it's sort of stiff when not loaded. They still have soft dampers, and the spring rate vs weight still isn't as high as a sports car.

Add the RED cobra insignia on the front and looks aggressive. I love them both, but Camaro would be the one to buy for me. Exterior styling is just more aggressive. There’s a reason why the GT350R is still marked up, and the ZL1 1LE isn’t, and that’s because more people want the GT350R, it sounds a ton better (a main reason why people buy these cars)(probably one of the best sounding factory cars ever made), and it’s a track car that doesn’t need the use of forced induction to be fast on and off the track. There a lot to be said about that.

      I beat a challenger in my 2016 1SS. It wasn't hard to do tbh. And I was bone stock, which I'm sure he was as well.
      Every gear shift on my car, had me pulling ahead of the challenger with ease. Chargers are a joke for the SS unless they have some strap-ons.
      The stock mustangs, cannot compete with the 1SS or 2SS let alone the ZL1's without their supercharger strap-ons. Even in handling they fall behind the Camaro.
      From what I've researched even a Hellcat cannot touch a Camaro with equal horsepower under the hood.

I rented a Camaro SS for a few days and of course being a rental car, it lacked any options such as blind spot monitors, so it was kinda scary to drive on the streets. WOW! Sincere thanks to BOTH OWNERS! Unbelieveably well spoken & honest- ZERO trash talk from either. Really enjoyed each others impressions of the other's car- maybe the very best comparo I've ever seen. Love them both, but, the sound of the Mustang, along with that 8,200 RPM limit along with a daily driver ride (1LE was way to stiff) was my favorite. I agreed with both owners- the seats & dash & tech would've been nicer in the GT350R, but, who doesn't adore 650/650 on tap- all the time? I can barely tell a rental V6 from a Shelby, so, the Camaro is a real stand out- "what is that thing?" is what I always say when I see one (albeit rarely). EddieX- great work, and, (I'm guessing) solid editing! What a high bar to achieve, I hope you can keep it up! At $65k- the Camaro is a dedicated track car (pricey), and the GT350R isn't. But, at 65K for it, I think I would want more: tech, options, luxury, etc...

    I have a ZL11LE and I don't have a problem at all seeing out of it, my head is in the middle of the window. I don't look out the window with my bicep. The problem with these comparisons is that the ZL11LE is not a comparable to the GT 350R it's more of a comparable to the 911 GT3 or a lamborghini Hurican they have stiff suspensions also and have you ever tried to look out of a lambo? Nobody whines about the restricted vision out of that car. As far as the sound of the car put it in track mode and double tap the TC then select track and the car sounds freaking awesome but it might scare you because this is the only setting that allows you to get full throttle all the other settings restrict the horsepower.

    • @racerj5004
      @racerj5004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. People are overly critical about the visiblity. Is it perfect, no, but it is an amazing performance car at an amazing price point. Especially, as you pointed out, performance wise it’s more on par with the Lambo and Mclaren. I have one and love it. I’ve never had a car that was more fun or could corner as fast. By the way, I also have a Mercedes AMG. I rather drive the manual ZL1 1LE.

    • @markmarshall9941
      @markmarshall9941 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, the ZL1 is GM's top performer for Camaro when in 2015 it had 505 hp to today's 640 hp, why because Ford's mid-range Stang gt350r track car blew it's doors off, it's horse power 526. So GM's using Ford's mark to beat, came back with more horses than a drag stock car in the late 80's rated at just 500 hp. So if you want a comparison you have to race the KR (king of the road) GT 500.
      Note: Corvette was made to compete with Ford's two seater in the 50's, the Thunderbird, who always won the race. But now the mustang whooped that ass (Corvettes) so many times and the ford GT being a super car they threw their motor out, built a new one, with more torque and redesigned the whole car after putting the motor in the middle (like Seattle moving out of the AFC West, and being relocated to NFC North before they could win a title) of the chassis, good job GM but I'm still riding a Stang baby, the original American icon. GM did a fantastic job chased the leader GT 350 and after a couple tries got em'.

    • @olikat8
      @olikat8 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say the ZL-1 1-LE is closer to the GT-500. Take the supercharger off, thus an SS with the 1-LE option and this becomes more of an apples-to-apples comparison with the GT350-R. Visibility is much worse than in the Mustang, not insurmountable, but not as easy to see out of in comparison. The LS motor makes torque much easier, less oil consumption as well

Putting a giant blown motor on a car with race suspension isn’t anything crazy to me. It’s a cool car for sure. But I think the gt350R is more special and I think time will fell the same.

Both of these are great cars, I have driven a regular gt350 and a zl1 and both are absolutely amazing cars, and honestly someone with my driving ability will never come close to pushing either to their limit in any capacity. What I will say is the noise is smile inducing in the gt350 and the sheer grunt of the zl1 puts the exact same smile on my face. Different strokes for different folks

    The GT350R owner mostly complained about the ZL1 1LE suspension. Solution, do what I did...buy the "regular" ZL1. It's everything the ZL1 1LE is, except for two things: 1) With the ZL1, you get the Magnetic Ride suspension (like on the GT350R), which is excellent on the track and excellent for everyday driving and 2) you can easily add the 1LE aero package to the ZL1 and then, poof, you have a ZL1 1LE with a better overall suspension. Oh, and I also got a sunroof on my 2018 ZL1, which you can't get on a ZL1 1LE. I added the aero so, in my opinion, I now have a better car than both of these.

      @@markmcintyre4707 I could have mentioned it but I was focused on my car. I opted for the manual on my ZL1 over the A10 (as you know, the ZL1 1LE only comes with a manual). I know how amazing that automatic transmission that they co-developed with Ford is but, since this is just a toy to me and not my daily driver, I went for the manual because I don't mind losing a few tenths of a second in order to enjoy the experience of shifting myself. ;) BTW, I also could have mentioned the 20" wheels on the ZL1 vs. the 19" wheels on the ZL1 1LE as well as the fact that the wheels have a vastly different design...as well as a couple of other minor things. I like the design of my wheels much better. Harder to clean, but I think they look awesome.

    i own the 1le. i think this is the best review of these two cars i've seen. One beef - i get tired of hearing what a hard ride the 1le is mostly because i got use to it. sure it's a hard ride, but somehow 2k miles later, i dont notice. and the other thing - that suspension glues the car to the road like rails, and i'd like to point that out. took the car to willows a couple of weeks ago. had a great time. drove the car there and back (500 miles round trip). best street legal car there that day, and kept up with all the pure track cars. for me, the ride is stiff but not harsh, not jarring. My two cents. Again, great video, Eddie. Love the format, especially since the owners work at GM and Ford.

    You nailed it with this review Eddie. I personally would choose the R and add more leather, power, wider tires and gadgets but with the 1le all you need is better race seats and exhaust. Overall I would give the Camaro the win but the Mustang gets my money because it's harder to upgrade looks.

    If you're buying either of these cars for daily driver "comfort", you're doing it wrong. The Ford guy complains the ZL1 is too rough and that he drives his GT350R daily. Then in the next breath says he doesn't want the comfort of heated and cooled seats in his "track car". I don't think he knows what he wants...besides dessert. Otherwise, great comparison video.

    • @Wings1090
      @Wings1090 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +BombersNemesis I'm not quite sure how it's wrong to use daily driver "comfort" as a reason to buy one car or the other. If I was just trailering the car to the track, you'd buy the 1LE without hesitation since the ride quality doesn't matter on the track. But, if you are not planning to use it just for the track and plan to use it for other things, then ride quality should matter in the decision you make. I wanted a car that would be good on the road and the track, not just one or the other. And I wasn't in the position to buy just a car for the track, so ride comfort is something I look for. The heated/cooled seats comments I said did not come out the right way in the video, and I can see why it sounds contradictory. Heated and cooled seats have nothing to do with overall seat comfort, it's just a convenience feature. The seats in the Shelby are actually more comfortable than the Camaro seats, and they are not heated/cooled, and that is stated in the video. And lastly, Who doesn't want dessert? Not sure how that adds anything relevant, but whatever. I'm glad you enjoyed the video though, it was fun to make and both cars were a blast to drive.

    • @BombersNemesis
      @BombersNemesis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I've watched almost every track review/comparison but it would be great to see that (a track review) from the owner's perspectives rather than people who make a living reviewing cars (i.e. Motor Trend and the like). The GT350R is quite the car and I have never been a fan of Mustangs. I have the opportunity to put some money down for a GT500 in the next few weeks so I have been scouring the internet for as many comparisons as I can and if the GT500 is even close to what it's being touted to be, it's going to destroy the competition in the muscle/sports car genre. Especially on the track.

      @@Wings1090 I am neither a GM or Ford fan but I simply wanted the fastest track car with a warranty. That's why I own a ZL1 1LE. The Gt350r is generally esthetically better but that's not why Ford designed it. It's supposed to be the pinnacle of Mustang track car yet it doesn't perform as it should. (Maybe they'll fix that with the next super charged GT 500)
      You mention that the Ford has better ride quality, but it's supposed to be a track car. The ZL1 1LE has intentionally stiff chassis and DSSV shocks that are same as the F1 cars. That's why it performs so well on track with cars that cost 3 to 4 times as much! You can't complain about ride quality on a car that was intentionally engineered to have that.

    • @Wings1090
      @Wings1090 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +JR B Congrats on getting a ZL1 1LE, it's one hell of a car.
      When the GT350/R was developed in 2014, it was built to beat the previous generation Z/28 (latest Chevy track car at the time) around a track. The previous generation Z/28 is the closest competitor to the GT350/R, not the ZL1 and the 1LE. The newest Shelby yet to be released is supposed to be the response to the ZL1 1LE. And to my knowledge, the GT350R beats the Z/28 around the track, so the GT350/R accomplishes the goal it was built for in my opinion. But when compared to the 1LE, it's no contest, but for a reason (supercharger).
      In terms of the ride quality, I can totally understand why they designed the 1LE the way they did. Hell, the Ford GT has the same shocks as the 1LE. But I complain about the ride quality in comparison to the Shelby because both are considered fast around a track (track cars), but the Shelby is more comfortable overall because of the Magnaride suspension. If the 1LE had the magnaride shocks like in the normal ZL1, I think it would still be as fast or close, but ride better on the road. Question: Do you daily the 1LE where you live? Honestly, I wouldn't want to daily the 1LE here in Michigan because the suspension is ONLY designed for the track, and our roads suck lol. People want to drive the 1LE on the road and on the track when they buy it, so it should be more comfortable to drive on the road if they are selling it as such.

    Great vid. Really dig this format. Btw, I've got a 2015 Z/28 (bought new at way under MSRP). Mods brought RWP to 590 and RWT to 500. Overall, spent less than a GT350R at MSRP. Now, I love the R, but every one I've seen is marked up 20K+. That's just ridiculous I recently drove a GT350. Not a fair comparison power wise, but even my stock LS7 had a ton more low end torque and I honestly don't care for the 350 exhaust note. I had a Boss 302 LS and it had just slightly less torque and also had to be wound out to get to decent torque (but the quad exhaust was amazing). The Z... give it a bit of throttle at any RPM range and it comes alive. Am certain the 1LE even more so. Also, head over to the GT350 forums and read up on oil consumption, blown engines, etc. I get that all cars have issues, but they seem excessive.

    A first time viewer, I enjoyed the format and the owner interaction. I am sure both were unbiased reviewers. Liked and subbed.
    These cars are true expressions of their builders design and manufacturing excellence. They are NOT very similar and that is laudable. They each have their charms and foibles and they appeal to different buyers for different reasons. Although both are track focused cars, they feature very different manners.
    The obvious enjoyment in evidence as each owner drove the product of the other camp was good to see.
    The real story is that these are both great sports cars keeping up the American end in a market full of Asian and European computer controlled, ground based space ships.
    Congratulations to Ford and Chevrolet for putting these very respectable track monsters on the block and hope they keep serving up this kind of lusty performance for years to come. Tally Ho!
