Which Photographers would you like to see on this series?? My Website, social and courses: linktr.ee/mattgranger Links to all essentials in description
I second @fetzie23's suggestions (especialy Morten Hilmer) but would add Steve Perry, Jan Wegener, Duanne Patton, Seth Mirander, Nigel Danson, Henry Turner to name a few.
Great video. A lot of helpful ideas and suggestions. I liked the glove 'hack', to keep you hands and the inner glove dry. Looking forward to the next video.
I got my Black Rapid strap because of you. It's absolutely invaluable when carrying two cameras: one with a 24-70 and the other with the 70-200 for instance.
Great video. No other lenses for travel? On the filter side, recently discovered Polar Pro, which I found really great as never falling off (always had issues with regular magnetic ones). I have a ND, a combo ND+ND64 and ND1000 so I can stack 2 together and then get all possible combinations.....works down to 20mm no issue.
Matt, as a Sony shooter, I am very close to purchasing a Z8 with a 500mm pf. Sony makes nothing like it in the same piece range without ridiculous restrictions.
Right... if you need long lenses.. Nikon has the best lens lineup.. they have the expensive and heavy fast prime and the slower, lighter cheaper options too. Sony dont have the. latter... altho 1 can argue the new 300GM is/can be the lightweight 420 F4 and 600 F5.6 prime. But its still not as extensive than the Nikon PF lenses.. also Nikon has the 600 and 800mm.. cheaper, slower lenses too.. for those that need really long reach and dont want or cant shell out 20 grand.
Great video. Never knew my box of lens wipes had a drop front. I have been retreiving them through the top. Thanks. That is going to be a "game changer."
Any other millionaires out there. Seriously just kidding. I would love to have this gear Z9 and 400/2.8 but the other half would kill me and also the wallet would break. Thanks for the useful tips that we don't think about other than the camera gear we take away. Cheers Matt
I'm looking for some works to allow me to afford a needed hard drive to help me have space to do things to get back on track in life, any millionaire can offer me some works for some bucks will be appreciated! :-)
Monopod: I recently purchased the Craig Kemberly monopod gimbal for my Z9/400 camera and lens. Like the large tripod gimbal, this new device is crazy good. For about $180 you can't beat it.
invaluable advice, thanks so much Matt! In August I'm going to Iceland for environmental portraits and between your videos and your "Iceland Exposed" I'm even more excited and prepared for it!
Those filters look really interesting. I would like to see a video for street photography. Great video -- really good presentation and well paced. No other photographers come to mind but I am sure you have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to other photographers.
Hello Sir, I is really a pleasure to get this new series ESSENTIALS from you. Most of your video are excellent also some of the tutorials I bought was of great help. I need an advice from you - I use Nikon Z8 and one Hasselblad X2D 100C camera . If I want to use my Hasselblad body and Nikon 100-400mm Z series lens what adopter is available in market for use ?
Sadly it’s not possible. The Z flange distance is shorter than the xcd one. So in *theory* you could put xcd lenses on your z8, but not Z lenses on x2d body.
Something I never see anymore is a comparison of the optical quality of filters. I would very much like to see a comparison of the most popular professional filters. I tried magnetic rings many years ago that go on the lens and filter. You could use your favorite brand of filter. I only use CPL and ND filters. And, by then I had accumulated filters in all the filter sizes that I use. But, I still think magnetic mounts are a brilliant idea.
Do yiu use iohone or android as your personal and photography phone, which model and any feature can be only done on one over the other? Sony Xperia 1 VI has 2X macro, do you think is it essential and there is artistic shot cab be achieve in macro world other than pattern education stuffs to take into consider when getting a phone because you can google these if you want to learn more about tiny world, artistic shots like street photography will have more variation that's unique to you and havnt achieved out there?
Hi Matt, I enjoyed your video. Just a quick comment about QD connectors. Don't trust them! Always use the provided safety strap. They need to be oiled on a regular basis to stop the little spring loaded balls in the connector from jamming. Tried the Black Rapid with the built in QD and had my equipment crash to the ground a couple of times before switching back to the regular screw in connectors. They used to carry a strap with the QD built in for Black Rapid but they have since pulled that from their catalogue. Hmm... wonder why?
@@mattgranger Hi Matt, They are like that. They hold well until one day they just let go when you least expect it. All of a sudden pow! I am not sure of what brand Black Rapid used but they came integrated with the strap and had no markings as to what company made them. Dropped my A1 with a 400 F2.8 attached a couple of times before I smartened up and attached the supplied safety strap to the lens. Funny they felt that they had to include something like that in the package. I wont ever go that route again. Went back to the screw in mount and never looked back or even thought about it until seeing your video.
Usually don't care for 'What I'm Packing' type vids...but you buried some very good info about the Z9 in this one. Coming from a Z8 & Z9 household I've always appreciated the features of the Z9. It is indeed a better (not by much) camera than the Z8. Interesting you have shot in desert climates and not been able to get the Z9 to overheat, but indicated the Z8 will. I shoot in the mild Pacific Northwest and have never had an overheating situation with my Z8, but never have put it under real heat stress shooting. Absolutely do not regret my Z8 purchase, but it truly is not a Z9- Thanks for the info!
OK, you review cameras, lenses, etc., and for the most part you talk about the same characteristics among the various full-frame mirrorless. Full frame mirrorless cameras are no longer new. What you do need to start addressing is something that full-frame mirrorless camera manufacturers should stop ignoring - the need for built-in GPS for non-top-of-the-line mirrorless cameras, as well as top-of-the-line cameras (OK, the Z9 has built-in GPS). Currently with most such cameras, for people travelling to multiple locations all the time, they have to go through some convoluted process to attach their iphone or whatever to their camera to get the GPS coordinates. In this day and age, that is ridiculous. You need to advocate for built-in GPS. Failing that, there should at least be an easy attachment to a camera shoe to provide for GPS
Instead of two 400mm lenses, I purchased one 400mm f/5.6 lens and one 500mm f/4 lens. The 400 is perfect when I need to carry something smaller and lighter in weight. The 500 is perfect when I need to carry something longer and optically faster.

Jan, Duane, Simon, Andy Mumford, no Fro...

Glad it was helpful!

Great to hear!
Same here, on your recommendation.

Awesome. Enjoy mate!

Thanks - I have reached out to some street photographers - hopefully I can include some soon
Where is your Monopod head in the equipment listing??? Please post it
Awesome video for the tools you used in your journey, I love the birds shots 👌👌👌
Thank you! Cheers!
I’m assuming the lenses you took on the trip had different filter sizes, which lens did you use the Kase filters on?
All of them. The kit comes with step up rings
The nitrate gloves used as an underlayer is pretty damn clever. Gonna hold onto that tip.

I use an iphone, but I dont take much other than snapshots with it.
That 400 2.8 is one serious lens!! I also don't believe in UV or protection filters.

Thanks. What brand of QD connectors have you used? The promediagear ones I am using seem rock solid: geni.us/PMGQD

I’d love you to feature Roman Fox. Thanks Matt.
in Hong Kong right now, next door to Chinese University of Hong Kong. hope you are well Matt, HK is a nice place.
Enjoy
How about Joe McNally?
Good to travel with chocolate 🍫
For travel photo - why not anything shorter? like a 50 mm??
Oh sure, I had 24-70 and more with me. But I can't list it all.
You would look good in a Bogart Fedora!
If u swallow a few of those lens wipes u can get drunk or tipsy too

So about $30k?
little more little less.... good equip cost good Money
No Sony camera :(
He shoots Nikon... plenty of channels with your Sony stuff.
Nope, I dont own any Sony gear. But we will definitely have Sony shooters on this series.

I specifically said the gps is one reason I choose the z9….
Think I’ll pick up 2 of those 400mm lenses. 🥹
Instead of two 400mm lenses, I purchased one 400mm f/5.6 lens and one 500mm f/4 lens.

You can never have enough. 😁
