I think highlighting when the original Hebrew/Greek is ambiguous is crucial. It helps cut down on confusion and accusations of this or that translation not just "getting it wrong", but doing so intentionally. (Among reasonable people. With the unreasonable... well, you know how it goes.)

    This is refreshing content.
I have always understood this to men "speak the truth in a loving way."
If we look at it as "being truthful", as suggested in the NET notes, then we could also paraphrase this as "be truthful because of love."
Of course, if love is the motivation for being truthful, then that should also lead to being truthful and speaking the truth in a loving way.
Paul wrote and prayed about some very closely related ideas in this passage:
Philippians 1:9-10 CSB - And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment, so that you may approve the things that are superior and may be pure and blameless in the day of Christ,

"SPEAKING" makes more sense than doing because this is talking about refuting man made doctrines. I like the Eph 4:14 and Heb 13:9 combo punch. This helps me argue against the Doctrine of Grace.... with "love" of course! 😊

    • @P_Ezi
      @P_Ezi 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

The NET notes suggest the idea is closer to "being truthful," or "being real or truthful in both conduct and speech. This would include speaking the truth - and more. I am sure we all know someone who has spoken truth without being truthful.
Understanding this as "being truthful" would not preclude the connection to the previous verse, but would strengthen the connection.

Good video. I like to think of speaking the truth in love to a fellow Christian in sin as similar to the tongue-in-cheek manner that Tolkien described some of the hobbits after the end of Bilbo's Party, saying that gardeners came back and "removed in wheel-barrows those who had inadvertantly remained behind" instead of simply saying that some of them had gotten wasted. It's spoken in a tone that still honors the hobbit way of life even when showing their less honorable side, lifting them up for valuing community, having "a passion for family history", and it's these simple, fallible people who will be the ones to protect and ultimately destroy the Ring because of the simple life they value in which gardeners instead of warriors are held in high esteem, as Frodo later will say to Faramir. We are to recognize the good in a fellow Christian and help them get back home to the Lord's house just as the gardeners did.

Quick question. Someone claimed that the NKJV actually agrees with the Critical Text in some verses against the TR. 2 Jn. 7 was the best example they gave with the NKJV saying "gone out" instead of "entered into" agreeing with ἐξῆλθον of the Critical text. Any thoughts?

The issue with someone saying "the NKJV agrees with the Critical Text" and then citing tiny examples that don't have a major impact on a verse's meaning is that similar examples of such minor variation are already common in the various editions of the Textus Receptus. The overall character of a textual tradition outweighs a handful of differences that are barely even translatable. (In this particular case, the NKJV appears to agree with the Vulgate; such minor departures toward the Vulgate can often be found in the Reformation-era English translations.)

The "New World Translation" renders Eph 4:15 a little more distinctly, clearly and precisely (including adjusting the comma) "But speaking the truth, let us by love grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ."
study edition footnotes explain, "speaking the truth: The Greek verb used here is broad in meaning and might also be rendered “being truthful.” That is why some Bibles use such expressions as “living by the truth” and “practicing the truth.” Here Paul makes a stark contrast between the conduct of genuine Christians and the trickery, cunning, and deception of false teachers he denounced in verse 14."

    Hi Brother Mark:
In John 3:21, using different words, it clearly says, "DOING THE TRUTH". So that IS an NT concept.
    John 3:21--
ὁ δὲ ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα φανερωθῇ αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα ὅτι ἐν θεῷ ἐστιν εἰργασμένα.
    --John 3:21 [Biblegateway]
    John 3:21--
but he who is DOING THE TRUTH doth come to the light, that his works may be manifested, that in God they are having been wrought.’

This material will send many to hell and we must refrain from being silent on the matter under the false unity that many Christians claim with Catholics.
    Please prayerfully consider this.

Catholic material, like any orthodox (i.e. Trinitarian) material, can be used by anyone with the discernment to recognize theological bias. The Reformers didn't throw Aquinas into a bottomless pit just because they thought he was wrong in some key doctrinal ideas. It's not truly Protestant to be so anti-Catholic that you reject everything associated with them; that's more of an extreme Restorationist position.
