Picked up the QM7 recently from Best Buy for 700$. Felt like a good deal given the huge price jump to the 75". Almost pulled the trigger on the 75" Q7 but I'm replacing a 55" so both will feel big. Hope the QM7 has noticeable improvements with the mini LED implementation.
I just bought the QM7 a couple of days ago. I originally was going to get the q7 until I saw the qm7. It is definitely an upgrade to the q7. I got the 55-inch on sale at bestbuy. The q7 was 450, and the qm7 was 499. It was a no-brainer qm7 is imo the best tv in that price range. Now, I just have to see how long this thing lasts😅
Damn I'm actually surprised how gaming is completely forgotten in many TV reviews even in Digital Trends. I mean I don't want a Digital Foundry analysis but at least something man. Anyways other than that great job!
Yeah, i must wait until I get all the TVs to really do the comparison because it's definitely time consuming to capture each TV separately on the same exposure so you can accurately determine which TV is for you because I cannot capture them all at the same time through a splitter due to the HDR tone mapping brightness calibration of the console being different for every TV!
Mr. FOMO, another great review. Thanks for including some off angle viewing analysis. I'm looking forward to your QM851 vs. SONY comparison, especially in the area of the processing of low bit rate sports content. What's amazing to think about is that if your source is 720p, which is cable or most streaming services, you get enough data for 900k pixels. If you have a 4K TV, it has 8.3M pixels. The TV has to figure out how to fill the screen based on only 1/9th of the data.
TCL is seeing if people will bite on the MSRP price. As you can see on bestbuy nobody is. It's going to drop to 1200$ They're playing the long game naming the TV the same thing as the previous year. People will see the cheaper previous year TV and not understand that it's last year's model and buy that instead then they can lower the price of the new model later to it's true sale price. Smart because it's helps them move last year's stock.
@@Ren32 i was always told that dividing by zero is undefined. at any rate it's definitely not infinite contrast because we see contrast differences between various OLEDs that can all reach black levels of 0
Excellent review format and content Mr. Fomo, just what I was looking for. The TCL QM851 looks very good with TCL listening to it's customers and fixing issues from last year. I am looking for a 98" this year so waiting for Hisense to release ther UX as I am curious if the UX has a better processing than the U8N.
Unfortunately a different model comes to uk . Could you find out if its the same panel maybe just different name. I was all ready to buy 65 x95L but after finding out SDR will not be dull on c3 maybe I've got some more thinking to do
Thanks FOMO! Can you do a comparison on how the older OLED's hold up over time. I still have a 55" LG B7 and it looks very good and still looks bright enough, it's in our bedroom now, and we have the brightness at 50. The older OLED's do have a touch of image retention, which is annoying, but it does go away. It is noticeable and its annoying, not annoying enough to upgrade (not even close). Have a C2 83" and that is a very bright TV with almost every issue fixed, except LG decided to remove DTS not the C2.
The best comparison review you've done FOMO thank you . At 21:32 you mention that the Hisense U8N has an ADS Pro Panel ... so I'm taking that you used the 75" for this comparison ? Did you choose the 75" over the 65" VA panel U8N by preference , or did Hisense just choose it for you ? It would be interesting to know . I helped a friend set up and adjust his 65" U8N (VA panel) and found it astounding and breathtaking in its HDR and SDR content . However it's brightness needed adjustment as I felt it needed adjustment downward for its astonishing but slightly excessive brightness in bright content scenes . However per RTINGS 05.31.24 , a U8N update raised its peak brightness at 10% window to nearly 3700 nits , several hundred nits higher than its initial review just few days before . Perhaps this update relates to your findings ? Interesting to hear a comment . You did an excellent job FOMO thank you .
And where do you find this panel info at? I’m trying to decide between the TCL QM8 (2024) or the Hisense U8N in either a 65” or 75”. Right now I’m leaning towards the 65” TCL QM8 (2024)
there is clearly an over brightness in the TCL QM8 washing out colors! dont get me wrong it still amazing but is it because TCL QM8 is preproduction screen so it doesnt have full settings for color calibration or is it already in the market & it have bad software & needs to be updated?
I ended up getting an LG C3 with 5-year warranty for about $2,000 and I must say though I said I was going to keep my LG C1 till 2026 the LG C3 is an absolutely awesome TV and does HDR and brightness so much better. Sitting here watching and seeing things pop the way they do and how clean and Clean regular SDR picture is and even old-school movies even streaming looks good and don't get me started on 4K Blu-ray. Just the LG C3 hits different. I am absolutely 100% glad I made the decision to pull the trigger and get the LG C3
Can you make a video explaining the best settings to get on the TCL QM851G? Best gaming settings, best movie settings, best anime settings, best tv show settings, best sound settings, etc.?
One of the bigger surprises here IMO is that ADS pro black panel of the Hisense U8N. For being an ADS with natively lower contrast it was doing black levels and hanging with the OLEDS. Albeit yes crushing, but that would be more how Hisense is treating the picture processing. But maybe if it didn't crush maybe the poor native contrast would show? If not I think Sony should have gone with those panels for the Bravia 9. Especially if it truly wouldn't cause any issues with black level. The colors help with ADS and viewing angle and therefore also reflection handling without the prismatic smear. The could also have more uniform panel capability across all their sizes. That said the next year W-HVA panels from TCL will likely impress. But I am done waiting. I am getting the Bravia 9. I don't expect some kind of TV beating everything. Just that it is good and with Sony processing. Can't do OLED anyway.
Hi FOMO Great video, thank you very much. is this the same TV as the X955 and 98XMQLED98? So the German counterpart to the QM851G? I'm from Germany and would like to buy the TCL TV from the video, in 98 inches. Thank you for an info.
I believe the Sony X90L is still being manufactured and is priced similar to the 2024 Hisense U8N and TCL QM8. I like how the Sony X90L mixes 1,200-nit HDR highlights with 714-nit sustained full-screen HDR brightness, good shadow detail, good pre-calibration color accuracy, good PQ EOTF tracking, good gradient handling, and good color volume. I think it might still be a good low-cost solution for mixing accuracy with use in bright rooms, and is still relevant this year. Of course, if the 2024 Hisense and TCL can maintain the Sony X90L's accuracy at higher brightness levels, then the X90L WOULDN'T be relevant anymore.
There’s no point in getting the X90L when the Bravia 7 exists, or if you’re willing to get Hisense U8N or TCL QM851. X90L is a good FALD TV, but 80-96 zones don’t cut it in 2024, despite the X90L’s other positive attributes.
@@j.rfrazier1855hola The Bravia 7 is not even much better than the X93L. It only get brighter 🔆 but viewing Angles and Reflection handling is worse than that of the X93L. A 65 inch X93L is still cheaper than a 55 inch Bravia 7. Sony rebranding......
@@j.rfrazier1855 When you combine its other positive attributes with a price similar to the QM8 and U8N, I think it has its place as long as it's still being manufactured. Although let's also see what Rtings says about the 2024 QM8 because if they manage to add the positive attributes of the X90L to it, then I guess the QM8 would be a no-brainer. So let's wait and see.
I wish they made the QM8 in the 55 in size only the Q7N does and I really don’t want a larger tv for my bedroom so I my have to go with the U8N surely the Q7N is a step down from Hisenses best in the 55” size?
Can’t wait for the 2024 Hisense UX models to come out, want the 110 inch but budget may only allow for the 98 inch. The U8N held up amazingly well against these 2024 sets (aside from the black crush which is a big deal to me). If Hisense can fix that for the UX model then I’m sold.
Yo FOMO, can you post which settings you used for each TV? Looks like they were tweaked from OOTB so just wondering where you ended up for the comparison. Thanks! See you in a few weeks at MWAVE
Please make sure to do future comparisons with DTM off. I know the goal was bright room viewing, but a lot of the lifted scenes you show could very likely be rectified by turning DTM off. Hopefully we can get an in depth look at accuracy when the XR90 and HX3110 arrive. Overall a good overview though.
It’s $3300 difference in the US before TCL street pricing likely closer to $4k by Black Friday. Obviously the G4 is the better TV but nobody in the USia cross shopping them unlike the Bravia 9!
@@stopthefomo my god! How much is the G4 then? In Europe you can get 83” for EUR 5,4k, TCL is 4,4k for x955 and 4k for x855 - this one is QM8 equivalent i guess. They kick ass in 98’ space clearly.
How come none of you guys (tv reviewer community) have ever talked about the Dolby vision dark scene flicker on the G3? I'm sure it doesn't happen on all, but it's a problem nonetheless, but none of you have talked about it? Why?
With TCL always put audio into Dynamic sound mode. It sounds by far the best out of the sound options. We have the C845 and the Dynamic option is much fuller, deeper and richer by far. It isn't on by default. Try it and listen again to the audio & see how much the audio improves. What is the equivalent UK, European, Australia model for the QM8?
I don't know. On my Dell 27", 1080 monitor, the TCL sounded by far the worse and most of the images for picture quality looked the worst of all of the TVs, seemed overly bright in many comparisons.
In the beginning he speaks about the model of $ 10 000 of 115" that one is more equal to the X955 in Europe. The QM8 have an older chipset and screen than the C855, but a bit more nits and dimming zones. The US models VS the European Models are completely different in everything... So it is very difficult to compare.
I'm gaming on a QM8 rn. I explore any brand loyalist to consider this tv. The eARC generates better sound than my Samsung did despite it being a Samsung soundbar. Yes, including the mode using tv and soundbar speakers. The picture looks nearly as good as my 55-inch oled at an 85-inch screen size. QM8 is THE tv, especially for the price.
Great comparison! I know I shouldn't complain but would have be nice if you could have tested the 85" model. The bigger the models get, the easier you can spot the shortcomings imo
Great video. So the question is should l go 98 inch Qm8 (2024) or 85 inch Bravia 9? I assume by Black Friday they will be about the same price. Im leaning towards the 98 inch QM8 because l believe it will be close enough to the Bravia 9 and the immersion of a 98 inch tv will have more impact (to family and friends) than the slightly better image quality of the Bravia 9.
These just went on sale! I just bought the c3 at 1399 65". the tcl is $999 this week. wondering if I should keep or return for this and keep 400. I watch a lot of streams so maybe the LG is better.
Just shows you you can get a great TV with out spending extra dosh. Is it as good as the G4 or B9, no but look at the price delta . I wonder if this is the panel Panasonic is using for it's miniLED , with Panasonics' processing on top. Panasonic is using an TCL panel, and TCL is making the Panasonic Leds . Maybe also putting together the OLEDS as well/ Makes sense as less capital outlay for panasonic
I'm confused about comparing uncalibrated TVs. I imagine that basically everyone in this channel's demographic will be copying public calibration settings at a minimum. My biggest question: do you agree with RTings that it, "Has poor sharpness processing when upscaling low-resolution content?" Thanks!

@@davet3098 bcuz the u8n has far superior black levels/contrast to begin with than the qm824 so even off angle its going to show. the 75 would be even more noticeable
I have a question thought , is your U8N a 75 inches , which means it uses an ADS pro panel. I dont think it fares well with a VA panel especially regarding black bar and the 1971 scene .
One thing you can’t test yet though, is product reliability, and durability. One of the big problems with the Chinese brands over the last few years (HiSense and TCL) has been very poor product durability… Also, one issue is that I need a 55 inch TV for my current application - the Bravia 9 and the QM 851 don’t even come in that size…
Yes, they typically have QC issues, but I argue so does the big TV brand. Especially if you buy their entry level models. I have still have Hisense H7FGB1 (2015) and H9F (2019). They are still in working condition. I had neighbors or friends buy Samsung Q60B or LG Nano 75 2022 that had pixel line. A problem you typically see in a monitor.
@@mianlo2624 of course. My mother’s cheapo LG died a few months ago and I think we bought it in 2017. -the panel seemed ok, but the TV just wouldn’t receive signal from the cable box. An older but larger and higher model Samsung she had in a different room was fine. I had a flagship Samsung LCD I bought in 2007 and I tossed it just because of outmoded tech when I moved apartments-my new apt had two Samsung LCD midrange models from 2012 and the larger one has power supply issues and some dead pixels… and the picture quality of these is terrible next to anything new in 2024. But these are individual stories of individual units. Honestly what we need is a failure rate polling thousands of units… we don’t have that and never will I think. We have to rely on large numbers of user reviews, which will be from all different models and sizes… sigh. Honestly I think the rapid pace of tech improvement makes TV life length a bit less important-as I said I tossed a perfectly fine flagship TV that had lasted 17 years (very light use I admit) because its picture just wasn’t anywhere competitive with even cheap new TVs. So I don’t need a TV to last 12 years. But I do expect it to last 5 years.
It's hard for me to understand how a professional reviewer could be surprised by the fact that the QM8 better specular highlights then the S95D or G4. We are talking about mini LED versus OLED.... How exactly did this surprise you? Were you expecting?
Up till now, specular highlights would often be dimmed on darker backgrounds to mitigate blooming. What appears to be happening these days is keeping up the brightness of the highlights on dark without dropping brightness too much.
@@TheMailerDaemonLives absolutely true but specular highlights have always been much brighter on mini LED, QLED and even some standard LCD. This is almost without exception once you get into mid-range or high end LCD tech panels. Not only this, but the whole brightness scale is vastly more stable. HDR on OLED tech vs mini LED/QLED might as well be considered a completely different format altogether. The difference in presentation is night and day.
Sound: The QM8 is too bright/annoying, G4 & U8N are warm, S95D subpar. Yes, QM8 did well in other areas. I have concerns with their build quality as I seek TVs for 7-10 yrs (current 2017 Samsung is dimished with white spots). Also, upscaling is an issue too.
I also felt that the sound was the best on the HiSense U8N. Next G4. Did not like the way the QM 851 or the S95D sounded. I too have concerns with durability. HiSense older models have been notoriously bad with durability on RTings testing… Don’t know what they said about TCL…
You should be fine with the TCL. I have the P605 one from 2017 and it's still going strong. Keep it on 8 hours a day 365. I have had two minleds from them the R635 and the 2023 Qm8 as well. I can't speak for Hisense though. Never owned one.
@@brealll9647 nice to hear-but unfortunately single-user experience just isn’t really that useful overall. All manufactures will have fail rates, and it’s going to be very difficult to distinguish a 1% from a 0.1% fail rate with a few individual user reports… unfortunately this is going to take time and a whole lot of user feedback… What I have seen though is a general consensus that Hisense TVs fail a whole lot and pretty quickly🤣
@@brealll9647 I had a TCL P605 and mine broke after 1 year so 🤷♂. I bought an LG C9 a year later after that and it's still going strong in 2024! 👍. I'll never buy another TCL TV again.
U8N sounded much better on movie soundtracks than the QM8 and all others in the test here. On music, none of them...but a little bit better, the same U8N.
15:45 doesn't this show the QM8 showing most in the 4,000 nit content. Look at the red rays and the color in the space clouds in purple and blue/grey. It shows more of that at U8N looks good but all other TVs but QM8 is actually lacking showing all the color highlights.
I owned the qm851g for a little while before i returned it. The processing is god awful. The motion handling was probably the worse part. Usually i don’t care for motion handling when watching movies but it was too distracting. The response times are slow and the motion options are filled with artifacts. Nothing like sony or lg processing. Also there was super noticeable screen uniformity issues. The local dimming helps with most of it, but i could still see slightly lighter blobs on the screen. The only things good about it are the low latency for gaming and the crazy hdr brightness. Also the viewing angles are horrendous.

Sony has the best upscaling and low bitrate smoothing. Sony for cable, Samsung for gaming only, LG G4 the is best all purpose TV.
Another great review. Does anyone know if 2024 TCL QM8 is same as TCL C855 for the other markets?
No, It's called TCL X955 in other markets
Image processing the 23 MQ8 biggest weaknesses. I should have waited. But $850 for a 65” MQ8 can’t be beat.
Just bought it!!! Are you going to make a settings video for it??
Seconded
The TCL is $400 more at 65" and $500 more at 75"... maybe U8N is the one to beat right now?
In Australia the U8N, 85" is $1500 cheaper than the TCL
TCL is seeing if people will bite on the MSRP price. As you can see on bestbuy nobody is. It's going to drop to 1200$
They're playing the long game naming the TV the same thing as the previous year. People will see the cheaper previous year TV and not understand that it's last year's model and buy that instead then they can lower the price of the new model later to it's true sale price. Smart because it's helps them move last year's stock.
Thank you Fomo! Can't wait for your Bravia 9 review.
Idk the U8N seems slightly better? Im torn though

Amazing review! Thank you
The industry needs to stop saying OLED's have 'infinite' contrast. From black (00.00 nits) to the brightness limit is a measurable contrast ratio.
@@Ren32 i was always told that dividing by zero is undefined. at any rate it's definitely not infinite contrast because we see contrast differences between various OLEDs that can all reach black levels of 0

I'm waiting another year or 2 for a 98" TCL with w-HVA Pro ultra viewing angle tech. MiniLED goodness with OLED like viewing angles :D
I am thinking of going TCL QM7 65 inch to replace my 2019 55 inch 6 series

Unfortunately a different model comes to uk . Could you find out if its the same panel maybe just different name. I was all ready to buy 65 x95L but after finding out SDR will not be dull on c3 maybe I've got some more thinking to do

What would you recommend, 83" LG G4 or 98" TCL x955?
g4 allday
Agree for big display LG stay the best
Have you seen the x955? I've got the 85" and it's quite impressive. I like LG but the X955 is really good.
QM8 was nice and clear, but slightly too bright.. G4 sounded like it was being played in a barrel
Hey fomo, great video. Will you also be reviewing the hisense u9n?
Thanks FOMO! Can you do a comparison on how the older OLED's hold up over time. I still have a 55" LG B7 and it looks very good and still looks bright enough, it's in our bedroom now, and we have the brightness at 50. The older OLED's do have a touch of image retention, which is annoying, but it does go away. It is noticeable and its annoying, not annoying enough to upgrade (not even close). Have a C2 83" and that is a very bright TV with almost every issue fixed, except LG decided to remove DTS not the C2.
Just ordered the 65inch 2024 qm8 at bestbuy excellent condition for $935 like new open box and $1013 including tax cant wait to pick it up tomorrow🎉
Is it just me or did the u8n still look like it was generally more vibrant and rich in color?

Can you compare the qm8 2023 vs the qm8 2024 and if its worth the wait? Thanks

I ended up getting an LG C3 with 5-year warranty for about $2,000 and I must say though I said I was going to keep my LG C1 till 2026 the LG C3 is an absolutely awesome TV and does HDR and brightness so much better.
Better image processing than a G4? WTF?
Hi FOMO
Great video, thank you very much.
is this the same TV as the X955 and 98XMQLED98?
So the German counterpart to the QM851G?
I'm from Germany and would like to buy the TCL TV from the video, in 98 inches. Thank you for an info.
Hi i'am the Netherlands, it is the same as the European C845 model ( QM8 ). The X955 is up to 115" not up to 98".
X90L relevence?. It's starting to look like, at $4,588.00, even the X95L is losing/lost its appeal in 2024.
So let's wait and see.
remember, the fald and oled don't have the yellowing edge blur caused by mini led dimming tech. once seen, you can never unsee it
I wish they made the QM8 in the 55 in size only the Q7N does and I really don’t want a larger tv for my bedroom so I my have to go with the U8N surely the Q7N is a step down from Hisenses best in the 55” size?
Q8N? Also, Hisense in 55" are crippled this year over all larger sizes. It offers zero benefit over last years Hisense 55" inch models.
@@needsmoreclipping meant QM8 sorry
Can’t wait for the 2024 Hisense UX models to come out, want the 110 inch but budget may only allow for the 98 inch. The U8N held up amazingly well against these 2024 sets (aside from the black crush which is a big deal to me). If Hisense can fix that for the UX model then I’m sold.

Think you have to go x955 in Europe. To match the dimming zones and nits of the QM8
@@JoFaL yeah, but its not 65", so no 65" QM8 or similar for European markets.
The TCL QM851 is just a beast, I did not expect the TV to have that good Motion Handling.

Game Mode on TCL QM851G is the most accurate mode, ironically. it's an excellent TV over all for sure
Great comparison! I know I shouldn't complain but would have be nice if you could have tested the 85" model. The bigger the models get, the easier you can spot the shortcomings imo
65 is the most bought tv size therefore most relatable to viewers
So, now that the 65QM851G is retailing for $1500 ($1400 on Best Buy), so the U8N is the point of diminishing returns, yes?
Great video. So the question is should l go 98 inch Qm8 (2024) or 85 inch Bravia 9? I assume by Black Friday they will be about the same price. Im leaning towards the 98 inch QM8 because l believe it will be close enough to the Bravia 9 and the immersion of a 98 inch tv will have more impact (to family and friends) than the slightly better image quality of the Bravia 9.
qm8 as it has better bloom control over sony..and its cheaper

I have a question thought , is your U8N a 75 inches , which means it uses an ADS pro panel. I dont think it fares well with a VA panel especially regarding black bar and the 1971 scene .
One thing you can’t test yet though, is product reliability, and durability.
One of the big problems with the Chinese brands over the last few years (HiSense and TCL) has been very poor product durability…
Also, one issue is that I need a 55 inch TV for my current application - the Bravia 9 and the QM 851 don’t even come in that size…

How can I tell whether a store is selling the new 2024 with the new features rather than the 2023?
I owned the qm851g for a little while before i returned it. The processing is god awful. The motion handling was probably the worse part. Usually i don’t care for motion handling when watching movies but it was too distracting. The response times are slow and the motion options are filled with artifacts. Nothing like sony or lg processing. Also there was super noticeable screen uniformity issues. The local dimming helps with most of it, but i could still see slightly lighter blobs on the screen. The only things good about it are the low latency for gaming and the crazy hdr brightness. Also the viewing angles are horrendous.
