love how kunimi shows that it wasn't just kageyama that grew. both kageyama and his old team mates didn't get to experience the best of each other. they bloomed with other people.. that's usually life

This was an incredible match. Something that gets overlooked is how the girls in the stands showed up really just to cheer for Oikawa, and didn't really care about volleyball. By the end they're applauding the opposing team, and have an appreciation for the effort everyone left on the court.

To clarify some points, the Japanese school year starts in April and ends in March of the next year (with summer and winter vacations within the year, of course). Japanese students go to high school for 3 years.
There are 2 major sports tournaments per year, the Inter-High and the Spring Tournament. These 2 are basically the national level games. The inter-high tournament happens every June/July and the spring tournament happens every January of the next year. (It used to be in March/spring, hence the name spring tournament, but this was recently moved to January to give graduating students a chance to still participate.)
Karasuno just played for the preliminary matches of the Inter-high tournament. The winner/s of these preliminary matches will represent their prefecture/area (Miyagi) on the national level competition and the winner of the nationals is the best volleyball team in the country. Obviously, your team can only participate in the national level games if you win in your prefecture (the number of representatives for each prefecture varies). When Karasuno was at its strongest (when the Little Giant who Hinata idolizes was playing), Karasuno reached the Spring Tournament nationals once.
Karasuno just lost to Seijoh, so they were eliminated and can't play on the national level. On the other hand, the Spring Tournament is in January of the next year, so preliminaries for that happen a few months prior.
Third year/graduating students in Japan usually participate in the Inter-high competition (since it happens during the 1st half of the school year), but majority of them would no longer participate in the spring tournament for various reasons.
    (1) They focus on their studies during the 2nd half of their last year in high school. Japanese university entrance exams are notoriously difficult and competitive. Students who studied in prestigious universities usually have better career options, job offers, salary and reputation. Since it may affect their future opportunities, it is a very big decision to choose between academics or extra-curricular activities at that time of their lives.
    (2) Third year students would want the younger club members (usually 2nd year students) to experience the regular/captain/vice-captain positions and train them early for next year.
    (3) Third year students who may not be as serious in pursuing sports as a future career may just want to relax and enjoy the remaining months in high school.
Of course, third year students still have the final say/choice if they want to continue practicing and participating in club activities until they graduate. It all depends on their life priorities. So technically, the spring tournament is really their LAST tournament if they choose to play on it.
*Currently, Daichi, Asahi, Suga and their manager Shimizu are in their third year, so they have to decide if they want to still participate in the club activities or leave it to their younger team members.

It's so easy after a loss or failure to just stop functioning, not want to eat, socialize, or think about anything at all and shut down, but the coach basically forcing them to do all of those things immediately afterwards with the meal was pure genius. It's the team metaphorically getting back up & moving forward together rather than staying down and wallowing in all that negativity, and putting that scene right after Hinata and Kageyama physically get back on their feet after Takeda-sensei's speech was genius writing. I'll never get over how perfect the end of this season is, and it only gets better from here. It's impossible to overstate just how wholesome and empowering this show is, I can't wait to see what y'all think of the rest of it!

Meals after a match have such a special significance to me, so I remember bawling on my first watch (and every watch, to be honest). We used to play this team in a Mennonite community, and they were excellent players and beat us. But I always appreciated the way their parents prepared a post-game meal for not only their children, but for our team. It was a huge pasta dinner, and we'd spend the nearly 2 hour trip home feeling better despite the loss.
I think that Haikyuu! does the same in the way it fashions the matches and their aftermath. The continued growth, the 'getting up on your feet,' is the meal after the match that prepares for the growth, restoration, and transformation later.
I'm looking forward to your reactions to the end of s1 and beyond. 😊

Thank you for sharing your memory , that’s so cool they did that !! I never heard of an opponent team doing something like that🥹 . Also when you brought up it being a pasta dinner , that brought up some good memories 🫶. We used to eat pasta dinners the day before a track match . Thank you for your continued support ❤️

Before I started watching Haikyuu I didn't really want to watch it because I didn't know anything about volleyball but the anime itself taught me a lot of things of the sport and I ended up loving it. I remember being so excited about the match that I ended up crying when Karasuno lost ahshshs.

    GOD this MATCH
The tension was just so fucking palpable - they got to the 30s and i felt like i had to pause to breathe when i saw the score lmao, i was so tensed up and jittery and then bringing up kunimi as a final card when karasuno was spent i was just like omfG
and then kageyama seeing that and being so suddenly aware that he had never really connected at all with kindaichi and kunimi and now he felt like he barely knew this guy and dropping into a dark spiral of such alienation was like aghhhhh - ofc hinata and suga pick him up out of there but it's so clear that rejection when in kitagawa affected him in such a deep, irrevocable way and it still does and it gets me
AND THEN THE WAY THAT HE'S COME SO FAR IN RECOVERING AND GROWING FROM THAT EXPERIENCE BUT IT'S STILL WHAT MADE THAT FINAL POINT IS JUST SOOO - yk what i mean, just damn, this show and its way of having things come full circle and all connect
And oh god ill never forget the way it felt like the air in my lungs was knocked out of me with the music CUTTING OUT and the sheer silence and the mere sound of the ball dropping and hinata's expression and oikawa's eyes with the simple line of *'but that won't be today'*
just FUCKKK it's so poignant and captures so much of both kageyama and oikawa as well as karasuno and seijoh's levels, progress and arcs - besides just being a fucking punch to the gut like 'lol u thought the protags were gonna win huh lmao sike, trauma is trauma and kags was predictable, get blocked bih' lol
Shit felt real as fuck, i needed like 3-4 business days to process the first time watching lmao, i was like idk if i can do another season right away yall i think i died- ; v ; (i ofc got around to dying from the next seasons lmao but every emotion new fans feel im like YEAH, EXACTLY, IFKR lol)
The ending was both for the characters and the viewers i feel like lmao - the whole thing about picking yourself back up again i was like YEAH OK ILL WATCH THE REST OF THE SERIES OBVIOUSLY TAKE-CHAN BUT FUCK MAN IM STILL DEVASTATED lmao - man rlly smiling up from the screen like 'u have three more seasons bih, get up'
And yeah the meal scene had me sobbing XD

about 3-years last chance. There is 2 tournaments in year, both can lead to Nationals. Students usually goes only in first tournament of their 3 year, because later they have to focus on lessons before exams. They still can go at 2 tournament but it can affect their grades (what are very important in japan) so usually only students who aiming to be a pro athletes going there.
They mentioned it before that this will be last time for asahi daichi and suga. You could saw other teams talked about this too (i believe the Iron Wall players said something like "Next time we will do it" to their senpais and they told them that they will try without senpais, it was last tournament for 3-years of Iron Wall).
and as always - love your reactions!

y'all are right. After I watched season 1 and reflected on it, it made sense that they lost at such a big match. They have a lot to learn, improve, and even try new better things or weapons to make their team more solid. AND they needed to feel that heavyweight of defeat. Something that'll motivate them and make them think "I don't want that to happen again. I don't want to feel that ever again"
But damn, seeing them cry while eating tears me up. I know that feeling. But I love that the coach is telling them to take care of themselves despite the loss so they can be stronger. Urgh, forgot there's that next episode 😭
    Can't wait for y'all to watch S2! 🧡
