IJN Sōya - A Japanese Survivor of WW2

  • When you think of surviving Japanese warships, you probably think of Mikasa. For good reason. She's a famous ship for quite a number of reasons.
    However, another Japanese ship- though calling her a 'warship' isn't accurate -survived the Pacific War. That ship was Sōya, a humble icebreaker. Seeing service as a survey ship and ammunition depot, she would survive numerous air attacks and attempted submarine torpedo attacks. Living something of a charmed life, in fact.
    And, in the end, she would also survive the Cold War by virtue of being used as a patrol ship, supply ship, and most famously...to support Japanese exploration of Antarctica. Ultimately ending up as a museum ship, where she remains to this day.
    One of only two Imperial Japanese ships- to my knowledge -to survive into the modern day.
