I continue hearing this criticism that a character has to be "relatable" but I don't understand this, a part from the desire to root for them. A "relatable" character always strikes me as an optionable quality, rather than a necessary quality.
Agreed. My game of the year for 2006, and one of the few games I actually finished that year. It wasn't perfect, but I fell so in love with it. So much fun, and strikingly beautiful to boot. Am re-playing the GOG version right now, and having just as much fun, only now I can crank the graphics all the way up and play the DX10 version. Good times, man!
This games graphics blew my mind back in the day. There were no other proper western shooters at the time so this game felt really great even if it had some annoying moments.
Yup. I used to just wander around, exploring and taking in the beauty. Am re-playing it now (GOG version), and am now able to run the DX10 version, which drastically increased the view distance, so it's more beautiful than ever.
Did not mention, that if you get shot in armor - you take no damage. Makes one character much more tanky without just adding more health points. Small, but original detail. In other games happens only for NPC. I think, headshots kill you instantly.
@@dtPlaythroughs As a series fan, I can understand your point. But I always viewed Gunslinger as a kind of arcade break in the series, to keep folks' interest up while the next game was being made. Even the $15 price point stressed that it wasn't a full-on sequel. And as a great Juarez arcade game, it totally worked. Except there was no next game. : (
What I sorely missed on gunslinger was that each gun you dual wield is bound to left of right click. What that meant to me was that I would have fast gun on one hand to rain bullets, and a powerful one on the other hand to finish enemies of.

GenWorldGaming It's just the same shit over and over. Hacking at zombies with weapons that need to constantly be repaired was a chore. On the contrary, I'm surprised people think Dying Light/Dead Island series are bad games. I enjoyed them for the crafting, open-world environment and coop elements, not to mention the interesting melee system. What was so bad about them? The cringy lines?
For me, I didn't like Dead Island because it looked like shit, the movement felt really slow, the durability system was absolutely ridiculous, and it got incredibly samey super quick. I enjoyed Dying Light, however. Even if it was pretty half assed
Zombies, repetitive, shit quests, shit story, bad lines. Lots of glitches and bugs in the Dead Island games. The combat is pretty bad too, a little better in dying light but not so much. Fine if you like them but i think i covered all of the reasons.
Disagree with almost everything. This game is an amazing, fun and very challenging shooter, and the missions had a lot of variety. The Story is simple and very easy to follow, it didnt need to be anything more, and both protagonists actually have an arc, that's why they start as pretty unlikable, but end up changing in the end The climbing mechanics are kind of stiff but you get used to them quickly There's a lot to enjoy
Picked the game up on a steam sale. Getting harder and harder to revisit a past time in gaming and enjoy it. Would have been nice to try these games during their time. My eyes and patience are not as sharp as they once were.
Dying Light was pretty good, the story sucked but the game was fun. Especially the DLC that had a better and more interesting story than the original game
Hi I was gonna ask if the first call of Juarez game runs smooth on windows 10 for PC l know it’s a old game but can it run good on compatibility mode with the game app Steam?
I played this game for like three times and, in all honesty, I think it's a masterpiece of western-based fps. I know it has serious limitations, in particular concerning billy: his sections are a little clunky and his character is not really all that developed. But if you want to dwell in a setting that drags you, a strong, interesting (even if a little cliched, but we're speaking of western, so it's not a dealbreak) lead character with an amazing voiceacting like Rev. Ray, a sense of freedom to just ride in the nature and an even more amazing soundtrack, you can have it all. I admit that the main theme is one of my favourite songs of all time, and when i read or watch something western-themed like comics or movies I always have the urge to hear it again that one more time.
Can you do review for Counter strike condition zero deleted scenes. (Counter strike with singleplayer campaign , similar to Half life and soldier of fortune)
I actually thought this game had the best story out of the whole series. It's a great intertwining of two character arcs where they both start off as pretty flawed and self destructive people (each in their own way), but eventually see the error of their ways and come together to redeem themselves. Agree though that the gameplay mechanics are definitely the least polished in this one, although I do appreciate the variety of stealth, platforming, and shooting rather than the wall-to-wall shooting of all the subsequent games.
This game was so hard for me back in 2005, since I was only like 7 years old when i played it. Got stuck on the first mission for ages, kept dying to some bs lol.
How on god‘s green earth could your parents let you play such a bloody and brutal game as a 7 year old?! Didn’t they care about violence despite your very young age??
Didn't like the first Call of Juarez games, but man I think Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is an underappreciated gem. I'm looking forward to your review of Bound in Blood and the rest of the series.
Zelousmarineinspace Oh, yeah I loved Gunslinger, but I think the game got enough attention compared to Bound In Blood. I personally would love to see Techland make another western game. Heck maybe take some elements from Dying Light, like Open World with Parkour elements in a Western setting with those Gunslinger graphic style.
I thought dying light was one of the better triple A games released this decade tbh. It was no masterpiece but it was consistently good in pretty much every aspect.
This game was something special in 2006. There were other mechanical elements that weren't commonplace in shooters at the time that made this one very unique. Things would catch fire and spread, most objects could be picked up and tossed around- etc. Didn't really age well, however. Still, this was before RDR. Gun and Call of Juarez were it for mid-ought Westerns.
by the way there was a two versions of this game, one of them was graphic updated version with dx10 support and maybe there was some other changes and in this game were funny details, for example you not allowed to shoot in corpses or horses
Well Outlaws is more like Doom in terms of level design, where you get dropped into the level and have to find keys to progress through. Call of Juarez is more like Half Life 2 or something, where it's very story driven, with semi linear levels and levels with platforming or "vehicles" to give it some variety.
CoJ one of my favourite game series of all time. First one has some dated mechanics even for it's time yes, but it was damn fun, and made you feel like a cowboy.
Bound in blood is just COD And i think there is a DX10 enhancement patch for this game makes it look a fair bit better and i think there is an un-official patch as well to fix a lot of bugs
Bound in Blood is anything BUT call of duty. The ads is not as responsive, the weapons require more accuracy, you can hold 3 guns, and you have a duelling system.
The Bible actually stuns some enemies when you actually use it, which was a nice piece of detail. While the dueling in this isn't as good as it was in Gunslinger, it's still better than the one in Bound in Blood. And yes, the melee system was awful, but you fight with your fists only 3 times in the entire game, which was a relief. I remember how Gman said that all of the CoJ games sucked beside Gunslinger. How the times have changed.
He said that in the podcast he dine with Salokin Sekwah. In that same podcast, he also said MGS3 was one if his very favourite games. I was baffled when I heard that. I'm used to the game being praised to shit by its fanbase, but coming from someone who doesn't like cutscenes interrupting his games much, and someone who calls out shitty stealth in games, I found it really hard to accept. I'm glad he changed his stance on the Juarez games somewhat, but I still think Bound in Blood is the best. I never got what was so great about Gunslinger. The bosses in it for one, are atrocious.
gilgamesh310 Meh, the bosses in the first game weren't that great either. At least you don't have to punch them *shudder* The dueling in the first game was much better since the player is actually able to dodge And prepare himself before the draw. The dueling in BoB felt awkward. You couldn't dodge, you couldn't prepare yourself, the only cool detail was that it showed which gun you were using when dueling. Gunslinger combined both of these world (except showing which gun you carried, that was a bummer).
Pepper Millers I barely remember any from it. They went by quickly enough. I wasn't a fan of the duelling in any of the games. Gunslinger probably handled it the best, but the general shooting, got boring for me. I just felt it was too scripted, and you were on rails too much.
I tried Dead Island but i couldn't get past the first part where you're in the hotel. Yeah, I never even got to the actual island part of the game because of how boring the beginning of the game is.
I ended up getting familiar with Call of Juarez through Bound in Blood, firstly through it's music, then by discovering it had a much better story going for it than I could've assumed (Nothing stellar, but definitely decent stuff). That in itself is probably what made me find Ray in this prior game more likeable as the two games tie to each other pretty tightly (Even one Ray's final, mission briefs pretty much sums up the entire plot of Bound in Blood, making it almost feel like Techland had a lot more material for their characters during development if not taking good advantage of what they had for Bound in Blood). It's no Red Dead Redemption, but it certainly feels like Techland was that valuable stepping stone towards it, and certainly giving The West some video game love. Don't know if I'll ever pick up & play the first one for myself though (Unless FOV can be altered of course). As for Bound in Blood, there was a mod released called "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood Realism Mod", which whilst does some weapon balance tweaks & renaming (Nothing like the leap from Battlefield 2 to Project Reality), is your only way to get higher FOV [Vertical] (According to the author, the FOV has to be edited for each level file, essentially making his mod the only provider of such feature), of which he has three levels above default (46 Vertical): th-cam.com/video/OAh9Jr55Ywc/w-d-xo.html In my eye, it's a rather good popcorn entertainment shooter with some "Seventh-Gen" graphical problems like extremely high desaturation & highly obscuring camera shake blur in some sequences (Good ol' "Next-Gen" need to blind players with "We can be cinematic" techniques of the day), but the voice acting & story as well as the novel western shooting mechanics and perhaps Pawel Blaszczak's soundtrack can be enough to keep you going if you don't mind yourself "Call of Duty in the Wild West with an equally themed plot".
Ray wasn't with the bandits looking for the gold. They tricked him. He thought they were Texas rangers looking for Billy, said he was there at Molly's dad's.... and that he and his ranch hands were rustlers. He realizes also that Billy was innocent there. The second entry is the one..where it makes the 1st... make you wonder how Ray and Juarez seemingly don't seem to know each other...given they spent a great deal working, and the origin of Marisa. Only one line... near the end is sensible. But, he should have known from the barn that said call of Juarez
Bound in Blood was amazing, in fact I still reinstall it from time to time and play a little of it. Gunslinger is also damn good, if not oddly amazing for what it is (basically a rail shooter wrapped in a score shooter's clothing lol). The 3rd game however, I rather enjoyed that one. Sure it wasn't set in the old west and the characters were horrible for the most part but it was super fun and satisfying to play it. Plus like with Bound in Blood, the MP was really fun (but only coop, BiB had actual MP).
I continue hearing this criticism that a character has to be "relatable" but I don't understand this, a part from the desire to root for them. A "relatable" character always strikes me as an optionable quality, rather than a necessary quality.
It may not be necessary, but it sure adds to the game if it's there. COJ totally worked for me though, because I am an asshole. ;)

multiplayer in this game was one of the most fun experience i ever had
On the contrary, I'm surprised people think Dying Light/Dead Island series are bad games.
I enjoyed them for the crafting, open-world environment and coop elements, not to mention the interesting melee system.
What was so bad about them? The cringy lines?
fuck you
i agree with you, honestly those games were more like guilty pleasures for me. especially dead island....
Amen brother
The Story is simple and very easy to follow, it didnt need to be anything more, and both protagonists actually have an arc, that's why they start as pretty unlikable, but end up changing in the end
The climbing mechanics are kind of stiff but you get used to them quickly
There's a lot to enjoy
Picked the game up on a steam sale. Getting harder and harder to revisit a past time in gaming and enjoy it. Would have been nice to try these games during their time. My eyes and patience are not as sharp as they once were.
hey bro, good review. would you ever consider of a review of turok 3 ?keep up the good work
How can you say Ray was unlikeable he was badass.
Played this game as a kid, remember most is the gunplay and glitches. most memorable was a massive black line across the screen when looking north
Good review, as always.
Great review my friend! :)
Did you ever get to play any game from the Marathon series for the Macintosh? I remember those games were awesome with a very in-depth story.
I know what it is. It sucks.
0:36 the way he says "shit". D'you turn into a cowboy fir a second thar, GeeGeeGee?
This game was so hard for me back in 2005, since I was only like 7 years old when i played it. Got stuck on the first mission for ages, kept dying to some bs lol.
How on god‘s green earth could your parents let you play such a bloody and brutal game as a 7 year old?! Didn’t they care about violence despite your very young age??
Didn't like the first Call of Juarez games, but man I think Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is an underappreciated gem. I'm looking forward to your review of Bound in Blood and the rest of the series.
I personally think BoB was my least favorite, although I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Gunslinger is awesome though
Zelousmarineinspace Oh, yeah I loved Gunslinger, but I think the game got enough attention compared to Bound In Blood.
I personally would love to see Techland make another western game. Heck maybe take some elements from Dying Light, like Open World with Parkour elements in a Western setting with those Gunslinger graphic style.
Wow a blast from the past.
Holy shit, i didnt know you can strafe when dueling.
I got stuck at that double duel long time ago and coudnt finish the game, time to do it!
I thought dying light was one of the better triple A games released this decade tbh. It was no masterpiece but it was consistently good in pretty much every aspect.
Woo! Looking forward to Gunslinger!
i love this game, throw it on at least once a year
pls sunny jim review the Metal Gear saga
Did you played "Chrome" by Techland? It's interesting fps but as you mentioned about CoJ it has "Techland problems" Still worth mentioning.
Please do a review of E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy. I'm curious to hear what you would think of it.
This game was something special in 2006. There were other mechanical elements that weren't commonplace in shooters at the time that made this one very unique. Things would catch fire and spread, most objects could be picked up and tossed around- etc.
Didn't really age well, however. Still, this was before RDR. Gun and Call of Juarez were it for mid-ought Westerns.
how u have the bow in the first missions ? i just played the game and got the bow in the end :(
I was wondering when you where going to get to these guys.
Will you ever review the sniper ghost warrior series?
This is one of my favorite favorite games
Really cool thing is that reverend Ray his voice is done by Marc Alaimo a.k.a Gul Dukat from DS9.
by the way there was a two versions of this game, one of them was graphic updated version with dx10 support and maybe there was some other changes
and in this game were funny details, for example you not allowed to shoot in corpses or horses
There was also the PS3 version, which is different to the PC version.
+Pepper Millers interesting, never heard of it before)
I may be too high but 2:55 is the most crisp way I’ve heard the word “combat” said. I mean the C came on hard and it was punchy and crisp.
This whole series, except for Cartel of course, are one of the few modern shooting games that I enjoy the most...
6:36 thats a unpopular oppinion I cant get behind, but hey, I respect that. Good video overall❤️
GGGman, how does this game compare to other western fps's like Outlaw for example?
Well Outlaws is more like Doom in terms of level design, where you get dropped into the level and have to find keys to progress through. Call of Juarez is more like Half Life 2 or something, where it's very story driven, with semi linear levels and levels with platforming or "vehicles" to give it some variety.
Outlaws is better.
This game looked a lot different when I was younger.
so you're reviewing gunslinger eventually? Sweet.
CoJ one of my favourite game series of all time. First one has some dated mechanics even for it's time yes, but it was damn fun, and made you feel like a cowboy.
I remember there was a clone of this game on the gamecube. Forgot what it's was named but it was fun with its own spin on it.
Bound in blood is just COD
And i think there is a DX10 enhancement patch for this game makes it look a fair bit better
and i think there is an un-official patch as well to fix a lot of bugs
Bound in Blood is anything BUT call of duty.
The ads is not as responsive, the weapons require more accuracy, you can hold 3 guns, and you have a duelling system.
the beginning is identical
+Andrew Kilner maybe but still...
Andrew Kilner Does every game that has explosions or high fps action considered Cod? Come on now.
At least you don't have to punch them *shudder*
The dueling in the first game was much better since the player is actually able to dodge And prepare himself before the draw.
Its an arcade shooter, its kind of suppose to be on rails.
The previous games felt more open, i'll give you that.
Man you don't like Dead Island...Review?
who does the game is so boring in my opinion dying light is better
I tried Dead Island but i couldn't get past the first part where you're in the hotel. Yeah, I never even got to the actual island part of the game because of how boring the beginning of the game is.
Excuse me what did you just call dead island?
Where you can buy this? Gog, steam?
As for Bound in Blood, there was a mod released called "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood Realism Mod", which whilst does some weapon balance tweaks & renaming (Nothing like the leap from Battlefield 2 to Project Reality), is your only way to get higher FOV [Vertical] (According to the author, the FOV has to be edited for each level file, essentially making his mod the only provider of such feature), of which he has three levels above default (46 Vertical): th-cam.com/video/OAh9Jr55Ywc/w-d-xo.html
In my eye, it's a rather good popcorn entertainment shooter with some "Seventh-Gen" graphical problems like extremely high desaturation & highly obscuring camera shake blur in some sequences (Good ol' "Next-Gen" need to blind players with "We can be cinematic" techniques of the day), but the voice acting & story as well as the novel western shooting mechanics and perhaps Pawel Blaszczak's soundtrack can be enough to keep you going if you don't mind yourself "Call of Duty in the Wild West with an equally themed plot".
The series that gave us ladder goat. 10/10
Hey, brother, have you ever played Gun?
Should I play this as my first Call of Juarez game, or ignore it and go straight into Bound in Blood?
Might have to give this one another spin.
Man you go Billy
Do you plan on reviewing Red Dead Redemption one day?
Probably not.
They should have put the controller support for the pc version!
i remember it being pretty good, i even want to replay
Ever played Nitro Family?
How was Dying Light half-assed? That game is fantastic, really well made, and most certainly not half-assed.
