To say "The heavens" - as far as I know - is the same as saying "The cosmos" (Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.) So Bible verses like "The heavens and the earth are filled with (god's) handiwork" (which I don't think I quoted quite properly) go into further context here; But think of the time period when those words were written. It's a way people understood (and still do understand) the world around them.
