      Tell me you’re ok with rampant casual racism, sexism, classism, and eugenics without saying you’re ok with rampant casual racism, sexism, classism, and eugenics. Just because you spent the eighties willfully ignoring the suffering of others doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

      @camanderson5304 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@elijahculper5522 never said they didn’t happen, however, I think you’re overthinking this. I was simply stating it was nice to see everyone getting along. It was much better before social media made everything an issue again.

    • @elijahculper5522
      @elijahculper5522 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@camanderson5304 Social media didn’t make things worse. Really, things like politics and race relations have gotten a lot better since the eighties. And social media has been a big part of giving a voice to the types of people who were cast aside in the eighties. Nostalgia’s powerful. It lets you forget all the suffering that was going on and focus on an upbeat aerobics video and think “those were the good old days.” I’m glad you had a fun carefree time while neoliberalism gutted the working class and minorities were seen as subhuman. But for the majority of the country, the eighties sucked. Modernity is better by several orders of magnitude. And if we are lucky, things forty years from now will be so much better that we will look back and see the 2020s as a cruel era before the social progress of the decades that came after. The way we should see the eighties.
      The eighties had fun music, quirky fashion, and cool dances. Those are things to remember fondly. But the politics of the eighties ruined countless lives. How many of the people in this video weren’t allowed to live openly with their partners or were abandoned by their government to die afraid, alone, and shunned during the AIDS epidemic? How many of the people dancing here were addicted to cocaine that was coming into the country because the CIA was funneling it to right-wing paramilitary groups in Latin America because of the Cold War? How many of these people were forced to live in segregated neighborhoods with underfunded schools by policies like redlining and neighborhood covenants? How many of them were living under constant threat of being harassed by police who were accountable to no one? How many of them had loved ones who were struggling to feed their kids as Reagan used racist caricatures of “welfare queens” to justify gutting the social safety net? Be nostalgic about the art of the eighties; not the politics. Cos the politics were unconscionable. And don’t be duped into thinking that a video of diverse people dancing means that everything was peachy once the cameras stopped rolling.
      Race and politics were more of an issue in the eighties than they are now. Because the issue is injustice; not people demanding that they be treated like human beings. Your original comment made it seem like people fighting for their rights in the 2020s bothers you more than people being denied their rights in the 1980s. Or that you’d rather the people trying to make this country better just shut up, paste on a big smile, and dance so that privileged people don’t have to think about things that bum them out. Yeah. I’m reading into what you said. But “wasn’t everything better in the good old days” has been a dog whistle for every reactionary backlash to progress for generations. Odds are you meant nothing by it, but painting the eighties as a time of harmony and good vibes is whitewashing history and ignoring the very real, preventable suffering of millions of people. And if it goes unchallenged, then young people who never lived through the decade might be enamored by the politics of the era simply because the only version of the eighties they’ve heard about is the version where all the nasty bits have been edited out-either by people who actively want to undo the progress we’ve made or by well-meaning people who are only remembering the nostalgic bits through rose tinted glasses.
      It’s ok to be nostalgic. It’s ok to have had fun partying and doing aerobics forty years ago. I don’t wanna take that joy from you. But you gotta be careful when you go online and post stuff about how great 1980s politics was. There are a scary amount of people trying to take us back there. Reactionaries use idealized representations of the past to convince people to return to the old way of doing things. And for millions of us, that means returning to being second class citizens. Too many people I love were seriously hurt by the politics of the 1980s, which was anything but peaceful and harmonious. And it gets me riled up when people confuse the forceful silencing of millions with societal harmony.
      Sorry for being a Debbie Downer. I really mean it when I say I happy for you that you have fond memories of the eighties. I hope you have fond memories of the decades after and that you make tons of happy memories in the decades to come. I get that I’m probably overreacting to a comment that you made with good intentions and I’m sorry for that. But every now and then something just rubs you the wrong way and you gotta speak up. I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at the powerful policymakers, businessmen, media outlets, religious leaders, and lobbyists who used their power to hurt me and the people I love. That’s almost certainly not you, but there’s not really a way for me to give those people a piece of my mind. So I’m ranting at your comment even though you don’t really deserve to be snapped at. I really do hope you have a great day. Thanks.
