Is Plum Wine Actually Good?

  • Japan has unique alcoholic beverages such as saké and shochu. Among them, I recommend Umeshu plum wine, which is sweet and easy to drink.
Umeshu (plum wine) is said to have existed from around 300 years ago during the Edo period (1603-1868). It is made by soaking green plums harvested around June each year in alcohol (with a minimum alcohol content of 20%), together with glacial sugar.
One might imagine that plums are sour, but plum wine is almost never sour, and its main taste is the unique sweetness.
You can make it with any high alcohol content and the taste will vary greatly depending on the liquor you use such as shochu, saké, rum, wine, or vodka.
When actually drinking, umeshu is generally served on the rocks or with hot water to dilute it to a drinkable strength. Because it is so easy to make, it is often made at home and many izakaya (Japanese-style pubs) sell their homemade plum wine.
Umeshu is not talked about as much as sushi, ramen, or saké,
but it really is delicious, so please give it a try!

I imagined plum "wine" was made by fermenting plum juice instead of grapes. This is just plum liqueur, it's not unique to Japan, we do it here too. In fact you can do this with most fruits and also with hazelnuts, coffee beans, carob pods, etc.

Plums are usually slightly sweet though, they aren't supposed to be sour, but I've only ever had purple plums, not green ones.

Any specific umeshu you recommend? I remember only one umeshu I tried that wasn't tasty and that was the one I brought home as souvenir 😅

i really wanna try making plum wine at home, is green plum the unripe stage of the plum or is it a special type of plum?

I've been hunting for umeshu ( green plums ) forever. Where and when can I find them?
