    Not every deaf person is sign language trained. I never thought about that. Thank you for this enlightenment. Captions should indeed be compulsory in all bulletins.

      This device allowed her to pick up sound electronically ( after speech and hearing therapy and a lot of effort) and hear what others were saying .
      Thus she learnt to speak

    My cousin doesn't want to go for his cochlear implant operation, reasons are endless fear, shame and social exclusion are on the list. I hope he can listen to this beautiful lady. Everything changed for him when he was doing matric,one day he just couldn't hear sounds around him and accepting that is not easy even now.

    Everything she said about being deaf and the being excluded and having to adapt is 100 per cent correct, for people with severe hearing loss it takes resilience indeed, well done to Mia and her courage, and there are many other people like her, deaf, courageous, resilient and doing the best they can , now go and be Miss Universe Mia!

    We as the included have so much to learn about the excluded. I didn't realise that all deaf people do not necessarily speak sign language! It is phenomenal that Mia was able to pick up TWO verbal languages and is able to articulate both these so clearly.

    Coagulation to you Lady, and congratulations to S.Africans u made history by crowning a 100% earing impaired person as your Queen, my first time heared or seen something like this. This is what we call growth, these are some of the factors that is said a country is developed.
    Don't listen to the haters, remember SA is made of black and white, just like the USA, originally for the white people but now belongs to both black and white.
    Haters are talking but don't mind them, they can never share anything with others, even within their own country, they can't tolerate each other, tribalism is the order of the day in their country but always want to claim and want other countries to share their own with them.

    Mia is beyond gorgeous and a sign that our country wants to unite as one nation. It's only old era politicians who try to still divide us. She is also a beautiful role model for kids who are impaired in some way. I like her effervescent spirit. Well done Mia! You represent the spirit of the New South Africa.

    There is something very special about our country. Everyone who works hard can achieve their best. I couldn't help but shed a tear when I heard that our queen has some hearing disability. I hope our selfish politicians realize how special a people we are!

      The fact that we have managed to move on from the racist apartheid government of 30 years ago, have one of the best constitutions and fair and functioning democracies in the world is certainly an example of what an amazing people we are. Sure we have problems as many African countries do but we will overcome them and are proudly South African.
