    Explanatory Notice
    The following video documents a training session on Criminal Law basics that took place on April 19, 2013 in Bloomington, Minnesota. The training was arranged by Call for Justice, LLC, a Twin Cities-based non-profit that works to connect low-income people with legal resources. Part of our work is to train United Way 2-1-1 on the various Twin Cities legal resources.
    Ellen Krug, Executive Director of Call for Justice, LLC, conducted the training and coordinated the session. The training session was presented to Information and Referral Specialists and other employees of United Way 2-1-1.
    The information contained in this video is not legal advice. Viewers seeking legal assistance should contact an attorney. If you are a Minnesota resident in need of legal assistance and unable to afford an attorney, you should call United Way 2-1-1 by dialing 2-1-1.
    At various places in the video, there may be references to "Zoey" or "Zoey Zalopa." This is a fictional character used for purposes of exemplifying referrals to various legal resources.

    Criminal justice will be an interesting career option for those person who are interested in criminal law. A criminal lawyer is responsible for prosecuting individuals for or defending clients against alleged crimes perpetrated against the state or society. Thanks for sharing such a informative video. Keep in touch.

    I work in the Public Defender's Office and because of the coronavirus I have been ordered to 'work from home' and to keep myself busy enhancing myself regarding criminal law. I am finding your talk enjoyable and you are explaining things in a clear and understandable language so that those who are not familiar with the criminal law system can understand. It seems like MN law and RI law are very similar. Rhode Island is actually the first state to have a Public Defenders Office .... Thank You !!!!

    This lady is excellent at what she does. She explains concepts really well, and with humor. She is not boring - she keeps everyone's attention. She's a great teacher. What's with the comments about her? Yes, her voice is low and her hands are large. Who cares? After 5-10 minutes you don't notice anymore, because she is really good at what she's doing. Besides, who cares??? I would hire her to be my attorney and I would enjoy having her as an instructor.

    Excellent information, one thing I noticed that is wrong was Bail. It is indeed 10% however we pay the bail bondsman the 10% and they do take some payments or get a parents signature or lien a home etc.
    If you have $25,000 bail set, that means you have to pay a bondsman $2,500 ! and they keep it all! unless you can post $25,000 with the court then you do get it all back if you show up! So if rich its no biggy but if poor its lost!

    as someone who has been to jail I can say that most attorneys have no real experience in the courtroom. Most take a plea deal. Which means that the plaintiff agrees to plead guilty, accept the sentence, and usually go home from jail. This is of course unfair because the person will do almost anything to get out of jail the least of which is pleading guilty even if they think or know they are innocent. So the person gets probation or work release, the prosecutor chocks up a win in the case, and the perpetrator looks forward to a very difficult time the next time they interact with the police.

    As much as there are very good things being brought up so far (I’m only at 15:06), after all was said and done about the truck driver & around the time you discussed the fact that the judge had no choice but to dismiss the case, I was really expecting you to distinguish the case being dismissed with or without prejudice. That is an extremely important distinction because the judge would have certainly done one or the other

    Very professional and indeed a clever way of using the rules of evidence to your clients advantage. Everything is a balance however, and it is obviously a shame if the dead woman's family resulted in not being properly compensated for her loss of life; since on the balance of evidence it does appear that the lorry driver parking too close to the intersection was an element in the tragic loss of life. Equally of course it might be said that if the police had properly interviewed the driver, had spent the resources, then the case may not have been lost by the prosecutor.

    I assume that Ellen is the author of "Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change", Stepladder Press, 2013. "Getting to Ellen" chronicles the life choices Ellen had to make as he/she struggled with his/her gender identity issue? In the end, it's a story about the need to love one's self and the universal search for authenticity. Ellen wrote: "When I lived in the wrong gender, as a man, I never had any peace. Eventually, my “gender demon” began a near constant shout, “This isn’t right; you need to live as your true self.” My gut-that emotional barometer only we humans have-would pull and tug, reminding me that all was not right, and that things would never be okay until I faced the demon head on".

    @10:00 Self Incrimination / voice
    I thought that United States v. Dionisio found that
    "The compelled production of the voice exemplars would not violate the Fifth Amendment privilege against compulsory self-incrimination, since they were to be used only for identification purposes, and not for the testimonial or communicative content of the utterances."
    So how did this happen?

    I truly think it is disrespectful for anyone to call her out, she is teaching a course. Live your life the way you want to and do not worry about her voice. She sounds perfect to me and she is one of the brave ones, who is living her life to be happy. Most have no clue what it means to be true to yourself, I promise you she DOES. I typically do not respond to low class post, but this issue is close to my heart and I embrace her realness and I think she is brilliant.
    We should spend time working on ourselves, most will not have time to call out others.

      Law School 101 Happiness and achievement is all that matters. People criticise while she is putting food on her table by her career. At least she is not getting naked on youtube to make money, but she has a legit career. She is being HERSELF, and we should admire her for that. Maybe it is her natural voice as a woman, or her voice-box is injured, or she is transgender... but it does not matter, so long as she is comfortable with it and the court can understand what she says.

    • @willhornback8974
      @willhornback8974 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Happiness and achievement doesn't matter at all. The influence you have on this world while you are here is all that matters. Second of all, there's nothing brave about what she's doing. A sex change operation is not a brave act, the fact that it is considered as such is legitimately saddening. Bravery is willingness to put other lives before yours, for instance, the soldiers at Normandy, there's a video of a cop tackling a man with a gun and saying, "I don't want to taze him," and he didn't. THAT is bravery. I'm obviously not saying that there's anything wrong with sex changes, but our idea of what bravery really is shouldn't be demeaned to such low standards.

    • @univuniveral9713

      Will Hornback
      How do we know "all that matters"? From our perspective, it is what someone contributes to benefit us that matters, but to tha person, it might just be that only his/her well-being that maters to them. Same as ONLY your well-being matters to you. If you have to step on an ant to reach your car, you do nbot even see the ant. All you want is to get in the car and be relaxed after a hectic day. To that ant, your concern for it matters, but to you, you getting to the car and driving to meet your son/daughter is all that matters and tha is about you. This applies to every human.

    • @willhornback8974
      @willhornback8974 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Univ Univeral You kinda missed the point. The only invention that we have ever discovered capable of self-aware good and evil is the human brain. We are in complete control of whether we do good for this world, or become the evil within it. The side you pick, ultimately, is all that matters. You can discuss the importance of all life, not just us, somewhere where it is relevant.

    • @willhornback8974
      @willhornback8974 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Selfishness is factually a bad trait. Yes, we are all selfish in respects. I agree with you absolutely there, but in a utopian society, I think we would all agree that humans should be separated from the rest of the ecosystem, so that every living thing has the same ability to evolve over time, just like we did. That's all in a perfect world though, that world isn't Earth, at least not yet.

    If someone commits a murder, they are not necessarily sent to jail automatically. If they are not deemed a flight risk, the judge can set a bond of 1 million dollars. Whether the accuse can pay is a different matter. If he/she can, they are out until trial. If not, he/she us remanded in custody.

    This is very helpful but I do not agree when she said that people that rape and murder stay in jail usually with no bond. That is a joke because I was raped myself and the guy who did it raped me and 3 other people and only did 4 years and than in 2017 he raped a 16 year old girl and only got a year and half. someone who obtains a drug charge will get a bigger term than someone who rapes someone.

      +Raven Sarmona You have two types of crimes, the mala prohibita and mala in se. I would think that murder would be mala in se, where it is a crime in itself. Mala in se is where someone does something against another that isn't considered a law, and mala prohibita is where we have various laws that stabilizes society. Mala in se: Murder, Rape, Robbery. Mala prohibita: Running red light, Tax fraud, in other words, breaking laws that are set for us to follow.
