It’s unfortunate the sound is poor. It’s the best live performance of this song. You will have to watch it on the original Rattle & Hum 📀 DVD and crank it all the way up. The Edge’s guitar riff is awesome. The Rhythm section from Larry and Adam is awesome.

This is an amazing song by U2. Too bad the video sound is poor. Such a shame you can’t hear the drums-I love the rhythm section on this. The Joshua Tree album is a masterpiece. One of the all-time greatest.

When I watched it both in the theatre and on VHS, it was pretty loud. I don't know why it was uploaded at such a low volume.

You can hear tempo is a faster than it is , because of the movie rattle and hum.

I had this on vhs back in the day. It's a decent live version of the song. But yeah, this copy is way too light on the volume. And yes, Bono's guitar is pretty low in the mix even when volume is normalized.

I kinda heard a nod to Patti Smith’s Gloria in the song which is pretty cool but, I barely heard it.

Yeah ... they ended with Gloria. And yes, while it was the same version as Patti Smith, I believe hers was from 1975, which was a cover of Them / Van Morrison version from 1965. I believe U2 gives the nod to it being inspired by Van Morrison (which was their inspiration of their song, "Gloria" from their October album), even though they have brought Patti Smith on stage in some concerts, and they cover Gloria too.

What an awful recording. “From what I can hear!” I’m shaking my head, too, trying to listen to the song. Too bad. It does sound like a banger. Thanks, David.

Best to just grab a different version them Dave. It is a good song. Bono's probably keeping the guitar from previous/next songs.

Hey David, thanks for the review.
Apologies for the lower volume. Minimally, I should have given you a head's up. Unfortunately, there are only two versions (I could find) of this live version. I believe it's a RIP off of VHS. Both have the same volume quality. I often do not notice, as my sound runs through an amp that usually sits at 150%, but I didn't even put two-and-two together when selecting this link. In the future, I'll make sure to turn off my custom settings when I pre-screen and QA prior to submission. Live and learn.

This is missing the intimacy of the studio recording. The studio version would be impossible to replicate in concert. You reeeeaaaally need to react again to the studio version. It's a masterpiece in dynamics.

There is a similar video to this from an LA show that's much better than this one. Same tour/performance but just better quality if you wanted to watching that one.

Little tip here : with VLC player you can increase the volume to 200% if you didn't know

Someone took this off U2's concert film Rattle and Hum, but they definitely didn't get proper sound quality.

Not sure why that recording is used, someone already posted one much better recording w decent sound. Here is another of the same performance:

There are also great performances of this song, at a much later date for the Joshua Tree anniversary tour.

What a shame about the volume. U2 fans will stick thru it, but other folk that don't know it won't. Without volume the beginning that starts low and eventually gets higher is lost. I'll still "like' it, you rock always, but you gotta get a new song or volume.

On Bono playing guitar, haha. I think it's minimal and may be more for looks. Ive wondered the same

He was an aspiring guitarist when they started the band in their teens. Just much better at singing.
