- Michael Fitzgerald, the Cork IRA leader, who was the first republican to die on hunger striker during the Tan War in October 1920. His death was eclipsed by that of Terence MacSwiney not long after. At the end of the Irish Civil War, Liam Lynch, the IRA Chief-of-Staff, made a final request to be buried with his late comrade. Both are buried together in Kilkrumper Cemetery in Fermoy, Co. Cork.
Gerard Shannon has an MA in History from Dublin City University.
Never heard of Michael Fitzgerald before and in just listening to this lecture I am in awe of the sacrifice that he made for Irish freedom. Having now heard the lecture, I assumed that Fitzgerald's Park in Cork City would've been named after him, especially as the park is just across the Lee from Cork Gaol. But it looking it up, it seems that the park is named after Edward Fitzgerald, a previous Lord Mayor of Cork. Michael Fitzgerald deserves to have a memorial somewhere in Cork. Tiocfaidh ár lá
