The biggest hurdle to overcome is finding a group that will meet more than once! I've seen many group fall apart from wishy-washy people who just want to dip their toes into the world of D&D. Being in a group is a commitment. It's kinda like being in a long-term relationship.

When I was first dragged into D&D all we had was a simple notebook of grids, pencils, and our own drawn-out character sheets traced on blank papers, and our DM was an author who acted as a storyteller to paint the scenes in our mind and the grid pages were for mechanical reference / hard-placement of where everyone is from a birdseye view of all our little dots on the grid (Lines / maps drawn around them). You don't even need the books, just read from online sources. The internet, paper, pencils, that's all you really need if you seriously want to start playing but are poor/broke. (Online dice rollers).
Kate Clementine Agreed, from an outsiders perspective D&D seems expensive and time consuming, but all you really need is the basic rules, a list of character stats and dice or something to the same effect.
Simon May You definitely don't need every book but I HIGHLY recommend that the dm gets the dungeon master guide. And atleast one player has the player handbook (or dm can have it and share it with the players.) AFter that everything else is optional.

There is a DnD like game called revolution virtual playspace on Steam. Then you can invite random people but not over to your house or theirs, but online.
I mean really you don't need any of this stuff. Just download the Player's handbook, monster manual and dm's guide, buy some dice, get your friends together and use your imagination. You don't need a map, some miniatures or any terrain, you just need 3 pdf files, some dice and some friends. heck, you could even use online dice if you want! just have fun with it, and don't get bogged down by models, miniatures and the ridiculous amount of money you would have to spend

Me and my friends are playing D&D for a couple months now, and we haven't paid a dollar; you can find every D&D book online (in pdf form), and there are some amazing dice apps out there, also you don't really need a map, I think that imagination is much better because it lest imagination flow.
thats really all it seemed to be. Really all you need is a Players Handbook, a set of dice, pencil and paper, and some people to play with. You dont have to use battle grids but its usually more enjoyable that way, any grid will do, and anything can be used in place of miniatures- dice, bottle caps, coins and so on. A lot of game/comic book/ trading card shops usually let D&D groups gather in their venue certain days, and sometimes even have sign up sheets for groups that are looking for new players. Though you end up playing with complete strangers, and sometimes they arent the easiest people to spend a couple hours sitting at a table with.
I'm the DM for a campaign in my group and one thing I was struggling with was the rules, like what are the stats? how to set up stats? when to use stats? do I have to keep track of all the stats every player has? etc etc. Although my questions aren't answered directly in the video, I learned a lot by just watching how he conducted a game. I suppose D&D is one of those games where you just get better as you experience it.
Super cheap alternative to minys... Bottle caps. When I was first starting out I had about 150 some odd water bottle caps for small creatures and 15 milk caps for large creatures... and so on. All you have to do is write a letter on them in marker and describe the monster.
DragonaxFilms I've used pennies in place of monsters before. I've also used marble chess pieces I had lying around., both as enemies and as statues or coffins. D&D is about imagination, you don't even need minis, or walls, or maps. You can do whatever you want.
This was a good guide to starting D&D. For anyone that is curious about starting up but don't know about the cost, there are starter sets they sell too that are only 20 dollars and work for 4-6 players to just test to see if it is right for you. It comes with a basic rulebook for levels 1-5, an adventure for the DM to run through, and some dice to get everyone going. They sell em at Walmart too, so you could one day just say "let's try D&D." It's easier than ever to get into it now that Wizard's made it more accessible to the masses.
I really really hope that you guys will do another D&D campaign. I enjoyed watching it so much and it was so much more entertaining than any other of the sort you might find on youtube. The story was great and Brandon, D, and Niko were all great players when it came to helping make the game enjoyable. I just hope to see more of it. :)
well to be fair they bring out a better visual and immersion on a character your team approaches i dont wanna imagine every character i come across i mean if thats the case we might as well not have a board at all and only have dice and cards

The official Wizards of the Coast D&D channel here on youtube held a few round table discussions with GMs and the question of how to get players started came up. One of them said: give them an armor class and a d20. Everything else about your character can be decided on the fly. Ideally, of course, it's better to have at least a set of ability scores, the usual strength/constitution/etc stuff, but the armor class is enough to get started with if rolling 4d6 and taking the highest three results six times is too daunting for a newbie. Also, for new players, the 5th edition player's guide and basic rules for DMs have been made available on the WotC website. It's pared down quite a bit; for example, most of the classes have three variants and the freebie handbook only contains one, but you and your friends could easily grab the two free PDFs and start playing in a couple hours. Personally, for 4th edition I relied heavily on tokens and accurate maps I drew by hand on quad paper. I used pennies for 1-hit point minions. 5th edition however, I did away with maps and tokens entirely. My first campaign went well, even though all I had was a partial world map to provide some context, with the entire campaign taking place in less than a square centimeter on the large map. As long as you have the battlegrounds in your head as the DM and can accurately describe what's happening to your players, you don't need any table dressing at all. I spent a lot of time and money making popsicle and toothpick furniture for my 4th edition games, but I've discovered it's not necessary and actually slows the game down a lot. But that's a matter of taste. I do love to see all the stuff the DMCraft channel makes with cheap materials.
Pipdockan How many times I've bought sets for the only purpose of filling space in my games, or when I think "That would make for a great town/dungeon/etc thing!", that is amazing, also with all the new chess and miniatures being released by lego (the random bags) it has come to a point where it is amazing to use for the D&D games.
Of coarse you don't NEED all these things to play D&D but tbh a game of D&D without miniatures and at least some sort of grid or terrain is just roleplaying. Which is fine but definitely not the full D&D experience.
Well it is a Role Playing Game after all... Some people prefer it old school just using their imagination when it comes to how the battle field looks like, how the big bad dragon and the castle look etc. When you can imagine these things, grids and miniatures aren't just useless but also a needlessly annoying distraction. It it only when the DM is really bad at describing things that there's a need for toys all over the table or when there's that one really dim witted player that just won't get where the enemy is unless they can see little versions of themselves and the monster. Even then, some meeple or even coins will do.
After watching your first campaign, then watching this video I got so emotional, this convinced me to take the plunge and follow these rough instructions. Been playing every other weekend for little over a year now! Thank you sir.
All Me and my friends first used were some notebooks and dice. We didn't even have miniatures or grids. I would dm most of the time( I was the only writer of our group. lol), and I would just paint a picture of the scene and they would act it out in game, then we would basically just get a good idea of how large the location is and go from there. It's a simple but still a fun way to play.

Miniatures and a grid make movement and combat easy to understand and grasp as a new player. Yes you can play without them but during combat when you have a lot of enemies it's extremely difficult to keep track of for the DM and players.
Digital With D&D, Wargaming, Trains etc. using a big screen they should have digital miniatures. - Tabletop gaming is fine - Dioramas - Kids toys to play with
I started D&D a few years ago. I've never been a DM but I've got the books on my PC as PDFs. It started with a friend who had an older brother who DM'd for us, and then he started DMing himself. We don't have any buildings, but he had a butt-ton of character figurines, and Warhammer 40K Sisters of Battle miniatures work great for Dwarven Mechs! He makes a lot of props for us himself; He made a map of the game world by drawing it on a sheet of paper, soaking it in tea to give it an old color, and crumpling and tearing it in places, and we choose after each adventure, where on the map we'd like to go next. He made a checkered game board for us out of softwood. And here's the best bit, he has an small chest, that he used for a potion set. He gave us a recipe book, and in the chest were ingredients (made up of random spices from his kitchen, but given names like "moontears" or something) in small vials. He said if we wanted our character to drink a potion, we'd have to "brew" it using the ingredients we had (mix the ingredients into some water), and drink it ourselves! We'd end up having to choke down a shot of salty chili water if we wanted a potion!

Its a fantastic starter set. Even you aren't new to the hobby the module within is worth the box price. Oh yeah and its only around $20
Thank you!!! So helpful, I know that these D&D vids don't get as many views as other videos on the channel, i.e airsoft, and certain video games. However, I think that these D&D vids are something you guys find fun, and are clearly passionate about. However many views they get. Don't loose sight of that passion, keep up the great work!!!
This only goes into the aspects of hardware, which is optional. D&D 5th-edition in particular is tending more to "Theater of the Mind" play where you don't illustrate anything with props. A better title would be How to Gear Up for Playing D&D, since it doesn't say anything about how to play itself.
I've been playing D&D for years and have spent almost no money. You can handmade a ton of stuff, just use your imagination. Also, I like the comment about simply setting a scene for your characters. I recently did a campaign where the players got shipwrecked on an island. I had encounters and story set up all over the island and just let them run around and do what they wanted. It was really fun. An additional tip: Get into your characters. The reason why this was so fun to watch was because of how active everyone was in talking to people, acting out things, etc. It makes D&D way more fun, and turns a bunch of dice rolling into a huge party basically. Don't get discouraged, I sucked when I first started, and so does everyone who's just starting out. But now, it's one of my favorite things to do with my friends. Good luck!! :)
Also -- you don't /have/ to have a grid. you can play d&d entirely without battle grids and minis, if you don't want to invest the money & fight the limitations that come with trying to have physical representations for everything in your game.
I'd hate for anyone interested in d&d to think you need to collect and invest in all this stuff. having this amount of minis and maps and stuff is unusual & optional.
Sam doesn't show them here but the cardboard cutouts he was talking about are called Pathfinder Pawns. A set of around 200(ish) goes for about $30, so it's a much more cost effective way to get tons of variety. Maybe not as cool as really nice minis but they still work perfectly. (plus imho the artists for Pathfinder have a much more interesting and engaging style than the artists WOTC hired for 5e)
Tristan Verbruggen search if there is clubs in your school. If yes then there is a chance there already is a D&D club. If there isn’t already a D&D club the make one!
As for minis, i bought a bag of little cheap plastic dinosaurs and we each painted them up to personalize them, so we had everything we needed in that regard for under $5. Worked nicely. You can also use bottle caps, bullets or any other small thing you can tell apart. Recycling can be fun.
I want to start playing d&d with a group of friends and we're all new. just reading the starter set rules and looking at the player feels daunting enough, before going through the very big player handbook and dm guide. your videos are very nice and well-made, I'd like to see a much more basic version of it for new starters.

You do give a lot of good info here. One issue I have is you present Minis as essential, There are lots of people that play theater of the mind. in 23 years of DMing I have used minis 2 times. I only use battle maps of large battles, eg. the Party vs 120 goblins. 98% of the time we play in our minds. Having said that I love minis, I own over 500 of them and have painted about 190 of them, and I am sculpting minis for my party's PCs and NPCs. I just feel that a mini moving 12 spaces forward on a grid, can never compete with my players imaginations. Kind of like a book being better than the move of the same story. The only other thing I disagree with on is when you say to "off load as much work as possible to your players." I try my best to keep their minds on their PC's 5 senses, and off the rules and numbers. I do think you have put together an excellent how to get started video for your gaming style, and I do think it would be helpful with getting new people into D&D.
I was lucky with my introduction to D&D in that I had brothers to play with and a square patterned carpet for a grid. Miniatures are the easiest thing to wing from random things lying around and if you have a grid building environments and structures is as easy as laying down pens, cutlery or whatever. Really just getting started you don't need anything item wise as you will be able to find a stand in in your house somewhere.
A long time ago i was part of a club where we made our own buildings. More often left over Styrofoam with paint can make great walls. Cardboard rolls with an egg carton cup can be a good representation of a castle turret.

I made my own rules and mechanics, the story is set in the world of The Elder Scrolls. There a races, classes and areas, everything is on a detailed map that lights up at night. We have so much fun, we play D&D but’s it’s just super modified.
Man, I remember my first time playing D&D. All we had was the core rulebook, dice and paper. Instead of minis, we drew and redrew the character's positions on graph paper. Even though I've since amassed a slew of gear, sometimes I'll still run games without a map or character sheets. It helps that my group is mostly actor-types.
I thought the Call of the Wild was a promotional video to show how appealing D&D can be, and I was surprised at how humorous the players were. A year or so later I came across Corridor Digital when I was looking into some film stuff, and I recognized the crew. So, it's seriously amazing that the video is made by guys who really love the game. It's also great that I found this group through two totally separate paths down TH-cam's rabbit hole.
D&D is my favorite game I started when I was 12 only using some lord of the rings Lego, notebooks and a chess board. It was not the full experience but it still got me wanting more D&D my bros and I split the money to buy dice and the handbooks. D&D 10/10 it isn't just for nerds try it out but get a good storyline.
Tabletop Simulator on Steam. I hook my laptop to a TV and slide tables in front and have everything I could ever want to create scenes in full 3-D to save/load at any time for my players. Been using it for D&D ever since.

I’ve been playing a couple years and let me tell you guys, you don’t need minis at first all you need is some graph paper and character sheets, dice and pencils with two binders taped together for a dm screen. I didn’t have friends to play with at first so I played online games using roll20 until I realized my local comic store had adventurers league. Before that I played with random and my cousin and siblings mainly randos until adventurers league.
I've never even seen anyone using all this stuff before I think that's amazing I feel like it would be a lot more fun doing it this way I've only ever played with just talking about scenes. this really brings it to life.

The reason minis add to the experience is that they prevent a game from turning into a memorization game. In other words, "where was the skeleton again?" "Wait where was the door?" *Stops DM to clarify character's position* aren't things you have to waste energy on as a DM. It just makes life easier
I've found with 5th that the friends I play with prefer not using a grid. Requires a bit more on the fly work as a DM keeping the battles in my mind (or sketched on something) but it also keeps the players more invested in what their characters want to do rather than how to game the system.
Tip: If you want cheap minifigures, buy lego minfigures. You can buy big bundles for under 20 and get lego knights sets that can act as adventurers. You can also make terrain and other stuff with pegos, it's super helpful.
Some other people have already said stuff similar but medieval legos are super great and versatile with buildings and people. There are even medieval lego chess sets that come with lego grids and soldiers that my friends and I use.
All you need to begin playing if you and your friends have zero experience is the D&D Starter Box. It costs like $12 on Amazon and will provide hours of entertainment and will help you learn the basics of the game. As a tip to have fun, if your players ever want to do something that has even the slightest chance of working, let them attempt to do it. As a DM your players will have loads of fun, which is what the game comes down to, having fun!
One note in regards to battle mats (i.e. the tan grid mat by Chessex mentioned in the video), DO NOT use DRY erase markers on the mat; you will ruin it. Instead you have to use WET erase markers (aka projector pens, or Vis a Vis markers).
A cheap alternative we use for layouts and miniatures is a foam board, grid paper, different color straight pins and price label stickers. Draw the maps on the grid paper (1 square = 5'). Pin the map to the foam board. Let the PCs pick what color straight pin they want for their character. For the monsters and NPCs I reserve yellow pins and wrap the sticker labels around them with their names (example: Goblin 1, Goblin 2, etc) written on it. Wizards also makes a great starter box that's only 20$! It has literally everything to run a really basic adventure, and if you can get your friends to play that, they'll play anything
When I played 2nd edition in the 90s we never once used models and grids. It was all talked through. My DM may draw some maps on grid paper to show us where we were but thats it. It seems that since 3rd edition came out, the models have become more essential.
You can start out using coins, jelly beans or anything else to aid in visualizing PC vs enemy positions on the game map. he miniatures are not required. Paper marked off in 1 inch squares helps... also not required. The minis or other representations are to help avoid confusion about positioning. Originally we did not use them at all.

Been playing AD&D since 3.5 came out, recently jumped over to 5e. Even though miniatures, terrain and even a grid are not mandatory they do have their place on the table. Ever since I started adding "real" furniture, torches, boxes and ledges to the table my players started using these elements to their advantage. More so then if I just discribed them. Check out the TH-cam video's by DMScotty, The DMG and Wylock. These three make their own terrain out of simple materials and can bring your game to life for a lot less money than buying everything.

When I was first dragged into D&D all we had was a simple notebook of grids, pencils, and our own drawn-out character sheets traced on blank papers, and our DM was an author who acted as a storyteller to paint the scenes in our mind and the grid pages were for mechanical reference / hard-placement of where everyone is from a birdseye view of all our little dots on the grid (Lines / maps drawn around them).
You don't even need the books, just read from online sources. The internet, paper, pencils, that's all you really need if you seriously want to start playing but are poor/broke. (Online dice rollers).
Kate Clementine Agreed, from an outsiders perspective D&D seems expensive and time consuming, but all you really need is the basic rules, a list of character stats and dice or something to the same effect.
Simon May You definitely don't need every book but I HIGHLY recommend that the dm gets the dungeon master guide. And atleast one player has the player handbook (or dm can have it and share it with the players.) AFter that everything else is optional.

I love this. How to "start" playing D&D and then the guy goes into all these miniatures. We never used miniatures. They're cool, but they're certainly not needed to start playing D&D.

You don't need a map, some miniatures or any terrain, you just need 3 pdf files, some dice and some friends. heck, you could even use online dice if you want! just have fun with it, and don't get bogged down by models, miniatures and the ridiculous amount of money you would have to spend

Me and my friends are playing D&D for a couple months now, and we haven't paid a dollar; you can find every D&D book online (in pdf form), and there are some amazing dice apps out there, also you don't really need a map, I think that imagination is much better because it lest imagination flow.
A lot of mechanics function on positioning, so at least a grid to track that does matter. But you don't need anything fancy for that, just some paper.
We should all be far more angry about this unimaginative approach. May as well play monopoly if you're gonna do it like this. I'm livid!

As a newcomer, this taught me absolutely nothing on how to play. It was more of a list of things I should buy rather then a "how to".

thats really all it seemed to be. Really all you need is a Players Handbook, a set of dice, pencil and paper, and some people to play with.
You dont have to use battle grids but its usually more enjoyable that way, any grid will do, and anything can be used in place of miniatures- dice, bottle caps, coins and so on.
A lot of game/comic book/ trading card shops usually let D&D groups gather in their venue certain days, and sometimes even have sign up sheets for groups that are looking for new players. Though you end up playing with complete strangers, and sometimes they arent the easiest people to spend a couple hours sitting at a table with.
How to play D&D in 3 words: Have an imagination.
If those 3 words dont do it for you then read the books they have more words in them ;)
I'm the DM for a campaign in my group and one thing I was struggling with was the rules, like what are the stats? how to set up stats? when to use stats? do I have to keep track of all the stats every player has? etc etc. Although my questions aren't answered directly in the video, I learned a lot by just watching how he conducted a game. I suppose D&D is one of those games where you just get better as you experience it.

Super cheap alternative to minys... Bottle caps. When I was first starting out I had about 150 some odd water bottle caps for small creatures and 15 milk caps for large creatures... and so on. All you have to do is write a letter on them in marker and describe the monster.

DragonaxFilms I've used pennies in place of monsters before. I've also used marble chess pieces I had lying around., both as enemies and as statues or coffins. D&D is about imagination, you don't even need minis, or walls, or maps. You can do whatever you want.

This was a good guide to starting D&D. For anyone that is curious about starting up but don't know about the cost, there are starter sets they sell too that are only 20 dollars and work for 4-6 players to just test to see if it is right for you. It comes with a basic rulebook for levels 1-5, an adventure for the DM to run through, and some dice to get everyone going. They sell em at Walmart too, so you could one day just say "let's try D&D." It's easier than ever to get into it now that Wizard's made it more accessible to the masses.
I really really hope that you guys will do another D&D campaign. I enjoyed watching it so much and it was so much more entertaining than any other of the sort you might find on youtube. The story was great and Brandon, D, and Niko were all great players when it came to helping make the game enjoyable. I just hope to see more of it. :)

The official Wizards of the Coast D&D channel here on youtube held a few round table discussions with GMs and the question of how to get players started came up. One of them said: give them an armor class and a d20. Everything else about your character can be decided on the fly.
Ideally, of course, it's better to have at least a set of ability scores, the usual strength/constitution/etc stuff, but the armor class is enough to get started with if rolling 4d6 and taking the highest three results six times is too daunting for a newbie.
Also, for new players, the 5th edition player's guide and basic rules for DMs have been made available on the WotC website. It's pared down quite a bit; for example, most of the classes have three variants and the freebie handbook only contains one, but you and your friends could easily grab the two free PDFs and start playing in a couple hours.
Personally, for 4th edition I relied heavily on tokens and accurate maps I drew by hand on quad paper. I used pennies for 1-hit point minions. 5th edition however, I did away with maps and tokens entirely. My first campaign went well, even though all I had was a partial world map to provide some context, with the entire campaign taking place in less than a square centimeter on the large map.
As long as you have the battlegrounds in your head as the DM and can accurately describe what's happening to your players, you don't need any table dressing at all. I spent a lot of time and money making popsicle and toothpick furniture for my 4th edition games, but I've discovered it's not necessary and actually slows the game down a lot. But that's a matter of taste. I do love to see all the stuff the DMCraft channel makes with cheap materials.

Well it is a Role Playing Game after all... Some people prefer it old school just using their imagination when it comes to how the battle field looks like, how the big bad dragon and the castle look etc. When you can imagine these things, grids and miniatures aren't just useless but also a needlessly annoying distraction. It it only when the DM is really bad at describing things that there's a need for toys all over the table or when there's that one really dim witted player that just won't get where the enemy is unless they can see little versions of themselves and the monster. Even then, some meeple or even coins will do.

All Me and my friends first used were some notebooks and dice. We didn't even have miniatures or grids. I would dm most of the time( I was the only writer of our group. lol), and I would just paint a picture of the scene and they would act it out in game, then we would basically just get a good idea of how large the location is and go from there. It's a simple but still a fun way to play.

Miniatures and a grid make movement and combat easy to understand and grasp as a new player. Yes you can play without them but during combat when you have a lot of enemies it's extremely difficult to keep track of for the DM and players.

I started D&D a few years ago. I've never been a DM but I've got the books on my PC as PDFs.
It started with a friend who had an older brother who DM'd for us, and then he started DMing himself.
We don't have any buildings, but he had a butt-ton of character figurines, and Warhammer 40K Sisters of Battle miniatures work great for Dwarven Mechs!
He makes a lot of props for us himself;
He made a map of the game world by drawing it on a sheet of paper, soaking it in tea to give it an old color, and crumpling and tearing it in places, and we choose after each adventure, where on the map we'd like to go next.
He made a checkered game board for us out of softwood.
And here's the best bit, he has an small chest, that he used for a potion set. He gave us a recipe book, and in the chest were ingredients (made up of random spices from his kitchen, but given names like "moontears" or something) in small vials. He said if we wanted our character to drink a potion, we'd have to "brew" it using the ingredients we had (mix the ingredients into some water), and drink it ourselves! We'd end up having to choke down a shot of salty chili water if we wanted a potion!

Thank you!!! So helpful, I know that these D&D vids don't get as many views as other videos on the channel, i.e airsoft, and certain video games. However, I think that these D&D vids are something you guys find fun, and are clearly passionate about. However many views they get. Don't loose sight of that passion, keep up the great work!!!
This only goes into the aspects of hardware, which is optional. D&D 5th-edition in particular is tending more to "Theater of the Mind" play where you don't illustrate anything with props.
A better title would be How to Gear Up for Playing D&D, since it doesn't say anything about how to play itself.
I've been playing D&D for years and have spent almost no money. You can handmade a ton of stuff, just use your imagination. Also, I like the comment about simply setting a scene for your characters. I recently did a campaign where the players got shipwrecked on an island. I had encounters and story set up all over the island and just let them run around and do what they wanted. It was really fun.
An additional tip: Get into your characters. The reason why this was so fun to watch was because of how active everyone was in talking to people, acting out things, etc. It makes D&D way more fun, and turns a bunch of dice rolling into a huge party basically.
Don't get discouraged, I sucked when I first started, and so does everyone who's just starting out. But now, it's one of my favorite things to do with my friends.

Also -- you don't /have/ to have a grid. you can play d&d entirely without battle grids and minis, if you don't want to invest the money & fight the limitations that come with trying to have physical representations for everything in your game.
I'd hate for anyone interested in d&d to think you need to collect and invest in all this stuff. having this amount of minis and maps and stuff is unusual & optional.

Sam doesn't show them here but the cardboard cutouts he was talking about are called Pathfinder Pawns. A set of around 200(ish) goes for about $30, so it's a much more cost effective way to get tons of variety. Maybe not as cool as really nice minis but they still work perfectly. (plus imho the artists for Pathfinder have a much more interesting and engaging style than the artists WOTC hired for 5e)

As for minis, i bought a bag of little cheap plastic dinosaurs and we each painted them up to personalize them, so we had everything we needed in that regard for under $5. Worked nicely. You can also use bottle caps, bullets or any other small thing you can tell apart. Recycling can be fun.
I dunno if you've seen them or not but a lot of people are putting televisions flat facing up on a table. No need to pay for maps any more.

You do give a lot of good info here. One issue I have is you present Minis as essential, There are lots of people that play theater of the mind. in 23 years of DMing I have used minis 2 times. I only use battle maps of large battles, eg. the Party vs 120 goblins. 98% of the time we play in our minds. Having said that I love minis, I own over 500 of them and have painted about 190 of them, and I am sculpting minis for my party's PCs and NPCs. I just feel that a mini moving 12 spaces forward on a grid, can never compete with my players imaginations. Kind of like a book being better than the move of the same story.
The only other thing I disagree with on is when you say to "off load as much work as possible to your players." I try my best to keep their minds on their PC's 5 senses, and off the rules and numbers.
I do think you have put together an excellent how to get started video for your gaming style, and I do think it would be helpful with getting new people into D&D.
Please do another D&D series at some point.
I was lucky with my introduction to D&D in that I had brothers to play with and a square patterned carpet for a grid. Miniatures are the easiest thing to wing from random things lying around and if you have a grid building environments and structures is as easy as laying down pens, cutlery or whatever. Really just getting started you don't need anything item wise as you will be able to find a stand in in your house somewhere.

A long time ago i was part of a club where we made our own buildings. More often left over Styrofoam with paint can make great walls. Cardboard rolls with an egg carton cup can be a good representation of a castle turret.

I made my own rules and mechanics, the story is set in the world of The Elder Scrolls. There a races, classes and areas, everything is on a detailed map that lights up at night. We have so much fun, we play D&D but’s it’s just super modified.

Man, I remember my first time playing D&D. All we had was the core rulebook, dice and paper. Instead of minis, we drew and redrew the character's positions on graph paper. Even though I've since amassed a slew of gear, sometimes I'll still run games without a map or character sheets. It helps that my group is mostly actor-types.

I thought the Call of the Wild was a promotional video to show how appealing D&D can be, and I was surprised at how humorous the players were. A year or so later I came across Corridor Digital when I was looking into some film stuff, and I recognized the crew.
So, it's seriously amazing that the video is made by guys who really love the game. It's also great that I found this group through two totally separate paths down TH-cam's rabbit hole.

D&D is my favorite game I started when I was 12 only using some lord of the rings Lego, notebooks and a chess board. It was not the full experience but it still got me wanting more D&D my bros and I split the money to buy dice and the handbooks.

I’ve been playing a couple years and let me tell you guys, you don’t need minis at first all you need is some graph paper and character sheets, dice and pencils with two binders taped together for a dm screen. I didn’t have friends to play with at first so I played online games using roll20 until I realized my local comic store had adventurers league. Before that I played with random and my cousin and siblings mainly randos until adventurers league.

The reason minis add to the experience is that they prevent a game from turning into a memorization game. In other words, "where was the skeleton again?" "Wait where was the door?" *Stops DM to clarify character's position* aren't things you have to waste energy on as a DM. It just makes life easier

I've found with 5th that the friends I play with prefer not using a grid. Requires a bit more on the fly work as a DM keeping the battles in my mind (or sketched on something) but it also keeps the players more invested in what their characters want to do rather than how to game the system.

Tip: If you want cheap minifigures, buy lego minfigures. You can buy big bundles for under 20 and get lego knights sets that can act as adventurers. You can also make terrain and other stuff with pegos, it's super helpful.
Some other people have already said stuff similar but medieval legos are super great and versatile with buildings and people. There are even medieval lego chess sets that come with lego grids and soldiers that my friends and I use.
All you need to begin playing if you and your friends have zero experience is the D&D Starter Box. It costs like $12 on Amazon and will provide hours of entertainment and will help you learn the basics of the game. As a tip to have fun, if your players ever want to do something that has even the slightest chance of working, let them attempt to do it. As a DM your players will have loads of fun, which is what the game comes down to, having fun!

One note in regards to battle mats (i.e. the tan grid mat by Chessex mentioned in the video), DO NOT use DRY erase markers on the mat; you will ruin it. Instead you have to use WET erase markers (aka projector pens, or Vis a Vis markers).
A cheap alternative we use for layouts and miniatures is a foam board, grid paper, different color straight pins and price label stickers. Draw the maps on the grid paper (1 square = 5'). Pin the map to the foam board. Let the PCs pick what color straight pin they want for their character. For the monsters and NPCs I reserve yellow pins and wrap the sticker labels around them with their names (example: Goblin 1, Goblin 2, etc) written on it.

Wizards also makes a great starter box that's only 20$! It has literally everything to run a really basic adventure, and if you can get your friends to play that, they'll play anything
When I played 2nd edition in the 90s we never once used models and grids. It was all talked through. My DM may draw some maps on grid paper to show us where we were but thats it. It seems that since 3rd edition came out, the models have become more essential.
I have been thinking about starting D&D for a while now and this video really gave me the final drops of inspiration. Thanks!
You can start out using coins, jelly beans or anything else to aid in visualizing PC vs enemy positions on the game map.
he miniatures are not required. Paper marked off in 1 inch squares helps... also not required. The minis or other representations are to help avoid confusion about positioning. Originally we did not use them at all.
My friend plays D&D and I've really wanted to play it with him or play my own games with friends, but never been able to get good info as to how to play it and I just wanted to say this was really helpful and fun, thx.
Been playing AD&D since 3.5 came out, recently jumped over to 5e.
Even though miniatures, terrain and even a grid are not mandatory they do have their place on the table.
Ever since I started adding "real" furniture, torches, boxes and ledges to the table my players started using these elements to their advantage. More so then if I just discribed them.
Check out the TH-cam video's by DMScotty, The DMG and Wylock. These three make their own terrain out of simple materials and can bring your game to life for a lot less money than buying everything.
